I am doomed to remember a boy with a wrecked voice — not because of his voice, or because he was the smallest person I ever knew, or even because he was the instrument of my mother’s death, but because he is the reason I believe in God; I am a Christian because of Owen Meany. In the summer of 1953, two eleven-year-old boys — best friends — are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, … game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy’s mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn’t believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God’s instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary.

I loved the characters and all their imperfections. The story bore elements of both realism and the fantastic, which worked surprisingly well together. The references to US history and politics of my youth were enjoyable.
One of the best books I have ever read.
To think about long after you finish reading.
This one is in my top 5 of all times. Not easy reading at first, but for 90% one of the best written books ever!
Enjoyed this one A lot. Give it a try
I love John Irving and his characters sooo much. This book was a wonder.
Classic Irving. His writing is so loaded with great word usage and phrase building that it is worth overlooking some of the ridiculousness of the characters and the circumstances he creates for them. As always the story moves apace and is entertaining.
Why isn’t “well written” a choice on these reviews? This is a wonderful book that really stays with you long after you have finished.
A surprising and heart-warming story of a tiny hero.
John Irving at his best. Even the violence is memorable and adds to the story
Another excellent read from this author with a totally fresh, highly unusual character. The voice of Owen Meany stays with the reader long after the book is finished.
I can’t say enough good about this book. Owen Meany is a character you will never forget!
Read this years ago and loved it.
One of the nicest books I’ve read ,laughing out loud ,
John Irving is a master in building stories and characters !
The first time I read this, I cried at the ending. The author has been compared to Dickens and I can’t disagree. Irving creates these characters that become real.
This is one of my favorite books! Funny, sad and wonderful characters. Memorable.
I AM A FAN OF JOHN IRVING AND HAVE READ ALMOST ALL OF HIS BOOKS.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK. THE STORY AND THE CHARACTERS WILL
STAY IN YOUR HEART LONG AFTER YOU HAVE FINISHED READING.

My absolute favorite book!
My FAVORITE American novel.
“A Prayer for Owen Meany” has been recommended to me for years because of its religious themes and since I am a fan of John Irving, enjoying “Hotel New Hampshire” and “The World According to Garp”. Ultimately though, I found this book very disappointing and thought Irving could have done better with what, actually, is a very original idea. Owen …
