I am doomed to remember a boy with a wrecked voice — not because of his voice, or because he was the smallest person I ever knew, or even because he was the instrument of my mother’s death, but because he is the reason I believe in God; I am a Christian because of Owen Meany. In the summer of 1953, two eleven-year-old boys — best friends — are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, … game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy’s mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn’t believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God’s instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary.

This is truly the best book I’ve ever read in my life! John Irving has the driest sense of humor that makes for the funniest and memorable books! Owen Meany is a character you will not forget, even many years after you’ve put down the book! I remember the first time I read this! I was up in the middle of the night laughing so hard I was crying!
One of the best books I have ever read. John Irving at his best. I insisted that all my
friends read it.KG
My favorite John Irving novel — no one can write characters like Irving, be they main or incidental you feel you could meet them an talk to them, they are so real and believable.
One of the greatest books I’ve ever read. Nothing like the movie that is based on this book.
Good read and fast paced.
The foreshadowing was brilliant even when it was overt, “as you shall soon see”.
Couple crazy twists which trample a number of biases at first, then let you off the hook later.
My favorite John Irving book. Weird and wonderful, full of compelling characters.
Wonderful, wonderful. Perhaps my favorite John Irving novel. The characters are solidly formed, They lead lives that are mundane and miraculous at the same time. I missed Owen Meany when I was finished reading the book. I highly recommend it.
This book hooked me right away. Except for some language, I enjoyed reading it. The story was well developed and you had plenty of time to really get to know the characters. Interesting read.
I find that either you like John Irving or you don’t. I do. While I love most of his books, a few are only above average (e.g., “A Son of the Circus”) – Owen Meany is solidly in the first category.
Irving tells a great story with many well-developed characters with idiosyncrasies trues to real life characters. As readers, we come to know the …
This book is composed of memorable characters who remain in your thoughts long after the book is closed.
One of my favorites!
In my top five. This will stay with you.
