The writing was superb as usual. It dragged in a couple spots but not for any really long length of time. The characters were fleshed out. I liked Bodhi and Henna (don’t like that name) and they had great chemistry and witty banter. The author has an intelligent sense if humor and it comes through in her writing.
Unfortunately, I don’t feel like I can give this book five stars. Yes, I giggled a time or two, got emotional in a few parts and I ugly cried through the last few chapters. The problem I had was that there were too many political issues (I’m calling them that because I don’t know what else to call them). Sometimes you can try to defend too many issues that you can’t do them all justice. She did well on the issue at those final chapters. Everything else not so much. The HEA came on quickly and I felt it deserved more discussion. I was not impressed with the epilogue. Things didn’t end up the way I wanted and she threw in yet another issue that wasn’t really addressed.
All and all it was still a good book and I would recommend it. Just make sure you have plenty of tissues and adequate time for a recuperating nap once you’ve finished the emotional roller coaster. Buona lettura!
This book WOW. I’M not going to go on about the author or the story line, all I really want to say, need to say is just WOW. A rollercoaster ride of an emotional read that makes you think, question, hope and pause. It’s not an easy book but then again it shouldn’t have to be. It’s beautifully enjoyable. This might not be your typical review but this not a typical book. Read it, enjoy it and while doing it look up the songs and listen to them while reading, it adds so much emotion to it.
Thanks Jewel, this book is a jewel.
This is an emotional love story about Henna and Bodhi. Two very real characters. Henna is a free spirit with a past that has left her with emotional and physical issues. Bodhi is a little more practical whose past keeps him bound to a commitment he feels responsible for and obligated too. They must navigate obstacles that threaten their relationship, issues that break them apart and have to discover themselves in order to find a way back to each other.
I really enjoyed this book. One of my favorite parts of this book was the way they would communicate their relationship through music, I would listen to the songs to capture the emotion being conveyed. There are so many feelings in this story. I have a very real book hangover. Jewel E Ann knows how to write a beautifully heartbreaking story, just to bring it back around and make you whole again.
I thought I would hate the MC, I thought she would be a flighty, shallow stereotype that would get on my nerves. I was very glad to be wrong. The plot line was unpredictable, and I fell in love with these characters. The sex scenes were steamy, but weren’t the cookie cutter versions of what happens that I find (and skip over) in many books. I recommend this novel—it’s a good time!
I have always prepared myself before reading any of Jewel’s book. I cant never figure out the state of emotions and when the ‘push and shovel’ come to an end. ‘A place without You’ Duhhhhh… Free spirit!!! My heart had flown away like a bird.. a free-style bubbly girl named Henna was officially my muse.. Im in awe with her skill of flirtatious.
Bodhi, my mysterious drummer.. Bodhi, the man who have melted my heart.. A man who scared to fall in love. I loved going through this love. The Bodhi-Henna love story were truthfully raw.. The story was full of angst and sadness. I have felt with so much emotions, this hurt. Jewel, your story was genuine and I love every words of it.
You are my world Bodhi-Jenna.. You are my spirits
This book. Oh, this book! Definitely my #1 read so far this year. It was written so well and took me on a great journey and I didn’t want to leave. Well done!

I can’t believe I waited 3 months to read this book!!! Why did it take me so long, especially when several friends were telling me I needed to!! I’m kicking myself because I could have had Bodhi and Henna in my life earlier!! I have been in the biggest book funk, taking a week or longer to read one single book. I DEVOURED this book in ONE day!!! I want to start it all over again and never have it end.
I got lost in Bodhi and Henna’s story, the world around me ceased to exist as I went on this emotional journey with them. Everyone hopes to find that one person in the world, the one they share a bone deep, soul touching bond with. Someone that will help nurture you to grow, to blossom and be the very best version of yourself.
A Place Without You was the very first book I read by Jewel E. Ann, and 5 stars is not nearly enough to do it justice. I would give it the brightest star in the sky!! Ann’s talented writing evoked such a strong response, making me feel not only the desperation, pain, inner turmoil but also the physical aspects that accompany such gut wrenching feelings. My heart was racing, my palms were clammy and at times I even felt nauseous. I love a great book that not only elicits true feelings of happiness but also tears your soul apart.
This has been my favorite read of 2019 and is going to be so hard to top!! Bodhi and Henna will stay with me for quite a long time, owning a little piece of my heart. I am ordering the paperback as soon as I hit save!!
Bodhi and Henna’s love is an all-consuming love. One that you feel in every part of you. One that is anything but temporary.
Henna is a bit of a free spirit with a tragic past. Bodhi is trying to live his life, but he’s letting guilt eat away at him. They meet at a certain point in their lives that they were destined too. Once they meet, there is an undying connection.
I highly enjoyed this story. It had been a while since I read something from Jewel and I wasn’t disappointed. The characters were pretty easy to connect too. It was interesting and kept me turning the page. Their love was a complicated one. But sometimes love is just never easy.
Overall, I give this Four Boundless Stars
Wonderful book…beautiful story and characters…loved Bhodi and Henna…cried sad and happy tears
QUOTE.°°. I’m pretty sure you’re still my greatest memory.
The beginning was funny, fun but slow and it took me a while to feel the connection that was Henna & Bodhi. BUT I felt it once I was deeper into the story.
°•~~•°Henna is not an easy heroine to like. Her actions and behaviors were immature (but she wanted to be treated as an adult) SO I did have to remind myself that she was young. Very young.
°•~~•°Bodhi’s character acted and felt the way I think I would feel If I’d gone through what he did. WOW! I can’t even imagine being in his shoes.
The 2nd part of the book was very emotional for me and it had such beautiful words and feelings that touched me.
The moment the title of the book clicks
QUOTE .°°. a million new faces, and countless cities … every place was simply a place without you. So it doesn’t matter
This author was new to me in 2018 and I read through her backlog. I love her stories and I’m glad I’ve experienced her fabulous and unique story telling.
Jewell E Ann is an expert at epic love and complex characters. Bodhi and Henna are no exception. They have a special love that has to survive some really challenging times. Both of them have experienced life changing events that shape the people that they are now. Bodhi and Henna are the kind of character that stay with you long after you read the last word. They both have great supportive parents.
I haven’t read many books by Jewel Ann and for the life of me, I have no idea why. LOL I know when I have read a few other previous books, I thoroughly enjoyed the story line and her characters so much. And this book is no different.
Jewel puts her all into every book she writes – I can feel the life come off the pages as I am reading them. Her books become alive and her characters so real.
A Place Without You is an extremely emotional book – you will have lots of highs and lots of lows, but it’s all so worth it.
Henna and Bodhi meet by chance at Coachella – and they aren’t looking for anything other than to enjoy what life has to offer. But they are both there due to very different reasons – one is escaping reality and the other is enjoying all that life can throw their way.
Henna may be a young, free spirit, but I love her outlook on things. Her parents have given her the perfect balance in life, but have also instilled strong ethics in her. I love Henna and even though she truly never took advantage of her parent’s lifestyle, she’s frequently forgot how easy she has it – how she’s able to do anything and not worry. However, it’s those moments that Henna has her “ah-ha” moments to reflect on how easy her life is compared to others. But she also uses her connections and parent’s lifestyle in good ways.
Bodhi had to grow up really fast in his life. He’s taken on a huge burden and feel it’s his duty to step and take on the reigns of everything. Bodhi is very selfless but also self deprecating too. He doesn’t see his worth and doesn’t feel he truly deserves anything that what his life has become.
Henna and Bodhi are two totally opposites in every way. They met in the most unpredictable way. They both knew not to view it as anything other than temporary but their hearts would forever be changed by that chance meeting.
Jewel takes us on a journey I had never anticipated. I love that Jewel puts the characters and their needs first – neither Henna nor Bodhi put their attraction and feelings before their wants and needs. They had plans and stuck to them, regardless of the outcome.
I feel like I have already said too much. I know this review feels like it is all over the place and it probably is. But that’s because that is how this book has left me. LOL I have a million thoughts running through my head, a million emotions and I love it at all.
I love how this book plays out – each scenario is real and raw and 100% honest. The characters stay true to themselves and don’t change just because another person enters their lives. While the characters at times did annoy me, it never took away from the story.
Henna and Bodhi are characters I will never forget and their story is one that I love – it’s the angst and passion I love reading. Highly recommended for anyone who loves a great romance story.
I’ll honestly tell you at first, I couldn’t get into this book and didn’t particularly care for it. I was a step away from messaging the author and telling her I just couldn’t finish this book. But I knew Jewel wouldn’t be out a book that was less than perfect so I stuck with it and boy, AM I GLAD I DID!!
Henna is our wild and free heroine. I wish I could be half as wild and free as she is. I don’t want you to think she’s had an easy life, just flitting around willy nilly but she’s learned life is short and you must make the most of it while you can. Then she meets this amazing man. But as always, the path to finding their happily ever after is never a straight line.
Bodhi is our troubled overly responsible hero. Having been wild and free in his younger years, he knows how your life can change forever because of it. And now he’s a “grown up” yearning to be wild and free again but there’s just too many responsibilities he has. Then he meets a woman who makes him yearn to be, once again, wild and free. But can he?
Once again Jewel doesn’t disappoint us with a book that makes us question our own lives and thoughts. She makes us fall in love with her characters and I’m sure if we all knew where she lived, there might be a few of us on her doorstep, asking “what are you doing to us??”
Have you read Jewel E Ann before? If so you know you are in for one amazing ride. Now ‘amazing’ has a scale to it. So what one (me) finds amazing others might find not so amazing. Your heart will go through the wringer/ringer (not sure which term is appropriate here).
I will state this is becoming one of my favorite tropes. As long as it’s done in this fashion. Meeting before the trope comes to pass.
What a ‘meet cute’ this is too. A ride share. The insta-love was done perfectly. (which sometimes I’m not a fan of b/c how not well it’s done) You will swoon over Bodhi and you will fall in love with Henna. Gotta love a straight talking, no shit taking, heroine.
In true #JewelEAnnEffect your heart will hurt. Your eyes will cry. Your blood will pound and you will read faster.
~I won a signed paperback.
4.5*
I can’t think right now…I’ll be back.
Well I’m back, and I still can’t think. A Place Without You is another dream of a book from Jewel E Ann. Angsty, gripping, heartwrenching, and unexpected- all the things I love about her books.
The love story of Bodhi and Henna hurt, I’m not going to lie. It broke my heart at times, but like all the best love stories, it was worth it in the end.
There are more detailed reviews you can go read if you want to learn more about the story before actually deciding if you want to read it, but if you’re a JEA fan like me, you don’t really need to know anything other than she wrote it.
I started 2019 with my first 5 Star read and possibly one of my favorites books for 2019. That’s the Jewel E. Ann Effect. Henna + Bodhi … Bodhi + Henna …. I’m pretty sure They will be my greatest memory.
Here a few things to note, Henna is 18, Bodhi mid 20s. Things to look forward … Henna getting high with Bodhi’s dad. Henna living her life, Bodhi, not so much, he lives with guilt. Henna makes Bodhi feel when he doesn’t feel worthy of such emotions. Henna is HELL to Bodhi’s emotions, but in the best possible way.
In true Jewel E. Ann style, her prose makes you smile and love her writing, makes you laugh, makes you cry, most of all makes you not wanting the story to end.
Was this love forbidden … maybe. Was this life everlasting … absolutely.
Should you one-click this book? Absolutely. Because A Place Without You is a place your soul needs to be rendered speechless.
Henna is supposed to go to a music festival with her dad but he’s unable to make it. She’s supposed to go home but instead stays to enjoy music. While there she meets Bodhi. They both feel an instant attraction and connection. Will this connection last after music festival? Bodhi has a lot of responsibility at home, can he make time for Henna?
A book by Jewel E Ann is one to treasure and this book is immediately added to that list of special reads. Jewel weaves words which mash up your heart and then serve it back to you on a platter woven from emotion, heart and soul. A particular kind of beauty uniquely hers. I love Henna and Bhodi so much and loved that the book used time, distance, experience, loss, gain and the gamut of human flaws and frailties, to pull us into a read which will linger for a long time, until I will need to go back and immerse myself in it again.
Beautifully Heartbreaking! It’s just not a JEA book without the tears. (Don’t worry though there is a HEA)
I loved this story… Jewel totally took a story trope I’m not much of a fan of and totally made me fall in love. I’m not sure what all I can say without just telling you everything, so just know you need to read this book.
