From an author well known for angsty, evocative romance comes an exciting new mystery series featuring the Reverend Cecilia Gurule and hotshot detective, Sam Chastain. Cici and Sam are friends and hiking buddies who stumble across the body of a parishioner on the hiking trail, and the fatal wounds look strikingly similar to the wounds that killed Cici’s twin, Anna Carmen, nearly two years earlier. As they begin to investigate this latest murder, Cici begins to get threatening notes and warnings, but her sister’s influence compels her involvement in the investigation.
I’ve been a Padgett fan since I read the first Seattle Sound book and was really interested to read an early copy of this book in a different genre. I loved Cici’s character for her authenticity. A female minister as the primary character intrigued me, and I appreciated her portrayal as a “regular” person with human frailties and believe her showing her true self made her a better spiritual leader. Sam was alpha and awesome, with a hint at a vulnerable side and a glimpse of some deeper feelings towards Cici, so I’m eager to see how things develop between them in subsequent books in the series.
Of course they solved the mystery of Donald’s death but I have no doubt Cici and Sam will continue to stumble into trouble. Although, I have to say, Padgett has set the bar incredibly high for future books with the shocking twist when the killer was revealed. She did a phenomenal job of sneaking in subtle hints to the killer’s identity, subtle enough that it only all connected in my mind after the fact. I loved the paranormal element of Anna Carmen and can’t wait to see what happens in the next book! If you like mystery and suspense with a thread of romance throughout the series, you’ll love this one!
A Pilgrimage to Death is a phenomenal read from the moment you open the book on the first page to the very last page. The characters are well fleshed out and the plot is believable. It’s easy to visualize myself in the story and I found myself cheering the main character on at times as if she was right in front of me. This book is centered on Cici Gurule, a local reverend whose twin sister was murdered the year before. Now Cici finds herself in the middle of an investigation when she finds a body while out on a hike and realizes the stab wounds bear a distinctive similarity to the wounds that took her sister’s life. What follows is a series of twists and turns that would make any roller coaster designer swoon with envy. Who can Cici trust and who is really out to get her? Will she be able to finally solve the year old mystery of who took her sister’s life and why? With the help of a few friends, her trusted 4 pawed friends, and the ghost of her twin sister who Cici thought she had lost for good, she’s going to do everything she can to figure this mystery out before anyone else gets killed. Will she be successful or will she be next? Score this one in the top ten and forget about getting to sleep early.
A Pilgrimage to Death is a suspenseful story that takes you on a twisting ride, not unlike a scary rollercoaster. In the story, Cici and Sam work together to determine why dead bodies are stacking up, including her twin sister. There are many suspects, few leads and several tense moments when Cici becomes targeted by the unknown killer. The reader is unprepared and left gasping when the murderer is revealed! The author ties up the loose ends well, including explanation of the roles played by all suspects. A well-written and entertaining book that will keep you up all night reading!
A Pilgrimage to Death was an edge-of-my-seat thrill ride that kept me guessing all the way through. Alexa Padgett weaves an intricate and enthralling tale, with relationships that run deep, and mystery that does the same. This was an all around fantastic story, and I’m excited to read the next books in the series.
This is a great mystery with twists and turns and just a smidgeon of romance mixed in. The characters are all great and there are lots of them, some nice, some not so nice and some more evil than you expect. Kept me guessing right to the end.
Oh my, who killed all these people? A mystery for sure. An exciting, enticing book to the end! Cecilia was a reverend whose twin sister was killed and to find out who and why she was killed proved to be the hardest thing Cecilia had ever done. A good spin on words and story line. I really enjoyed this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book.
This is the first book in this new series and the first book I’ve read by this author. This suspenseful mystery takes you through twists and turns you won’t see coming. In this small town people aren’t who they seem. You get danger, lies, betrayal and so much more. Cici and Sam try to figure out who is killing people and who is all involved. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I was so impressed with the author’s writing that right after I finished the 1st book I went back to Amazon &ordered the next 3 in the series. Read them all in 2 days& really hope there will be more coming. Would love to see how Cici & Sam will continue with detective work now that they are together!
I initially received this book to read and review, and about halfway through it, I loved it so much I actually purchased a copy. What a great first book in a (new?) series. No spoilers in this review, but here’s what you need to know. The author does a great job presenting this murder/mystery, which features a pair of hiking buddies who find a body and work together to solve the murder. Each character comes with baggage, and that story is great in and of itself, along with twists and turns and an ending that will completely catch you off guard! If mystery is what you love, then this is a good read; also infused with some romance, a touch of paranormal, and actually makes you start thinking about which way the story is going to go. So enjoyable! I’m glad this is the first book and I’m now ready to move right on to the second! If this is your first read by this author, you’ll be hooked. If you already know this author, you will immediately understand what I’m saying!
Reverend Cici Gurule lost her twin sister a little over a year ago and she is still having a hard time coping with her death. Cici takes a job in her home town and moves back home. Cici and a longtime friend of hers a detective who has also just moved back to their home town are out for a walk and they discover a body. After looking over the crime scene Sam realizes that the victim was murder in the same way as Cici’s sister, Anna Carmen.
The victim, Donald was a member of Cici’s church and she is determined to find out who killed Donald and to protect all the members of her congregation. When she gets a little too close to the case her life is threatened but Cici will let nothing or no one get in her way of finding out who killed Donald or Anna Carmen. Are the two cases connected? Is the killer the one and the same? Who killed Donald? Who killed Anna Carmen?
Cici is a very tough woman and is not afraid to follow whatever clues she is given by her sister Anna Carmen. Anna Carmen visits Cici on occasion sort of like a vision giving Cici the clues and details to help her with her investigation.
A Pilgrimage to Death will grab your attention from the beginning and keep you hanging on with all the clues wondering who the killer is. It gives you just enough information to keep you hooked and holding on to all its secrets until the very end. A Pilgrimage to Death is a great introduction into the world of Reverend Cici Gurule Mysteries. I can’t wait to dive into the next book in the series, A Heritage of Death.
A Pilgrimage to Death is great for all fans of murder, mystery and anyone who loves a great thriller.
Cici is not perfect. Yes she is a Pastor, yes she has a potty mouth (under the circumstances she’s allowed), yes she is right in the middle of an investigation with a target on her head. She doesn’t scare easy and that’s a good thing. She’s found herself knee deep in the middle of an investigation into a murder. This author gives us a great thriller with tons of suspense and awesome characters who aren’t scared of twist, and there’s a gang of them. This isn’t cut and dry and tons of folks will go down before it’s done.
Absolutely loved it. As soon as I thought I had it figured out something else came up. Love this author. Love that she doesn’t let you get comfy before she throws you another curve ball.
While hiking, Cici and her friend Sam stumble upon a body, which appears to be killed in the same manner in which her twin sister was not that long ago. What ensues is an investigation into what happened to her sister and the many people that seem to be involved in this tangled web.
Being twins, Cici always had a strong connection to her sister, and it seems just as strong, although in different ways, after her death. Hopefully, her sister can help her figure out who is behind all the murders and mayhem that is happening around town. Sam isn’t all too sure about the idea of his dead friend helping from beyond the grave, but he does believe in Cici.
A Pilgrimage to Death is filled with a lot of unexpected twists. I enjoyed getting to know Cici and Sam, and they work well together. There is a lot of world and character building which lays a good foundation for the beginning of a great series.
A great story

A PILGRAMAGE TO DEATH by Alexa Padget
Reverend Cici, has taken on another role, with the murder of her twin, a year ago, and now a murder of a fellow parishioner, with the same method.
Sam, a friend, hiking partner, and a detective, on weekly joints now, and made better sermons for her, With 2 murder victims now known to her, she feels there will be more, if she doesn’t look into it. Is there secrets that never was told to her, a reason for the wolf emblem. A new author, for me, and she delivered a good, descriptive plot, of the settings, also of the characters. Readers will definitely enjoy this mystery story. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion. Ellen Oceanside

Can Cici Gurule solve her twin sister’s murder while trying to stay alive? When Cici and Sam, a police detective and best friend with Cici’s sister, find a dead body with injuries as the ones that killed her sister they will push to a dangerous situation with more deaths until they find her killer and discover the connections with a drug cartel. An intense reading.
The Reverend Cici Gurule is determined to find justice for her murdered twin, but the killer has other ideas. Cici has come to Santa Fe so that she can be where her sister died. After another victim is found by Cici and Detective Sam Chastain, Anna Carmen’s spirit helps guide her sister. Cici’s investigation makes her a target. Can Cici solve the crime before the killer finds her? I enjoyed this exciting mystery. The Reverend is a complex character. I admired her quick wit and ability to follow clues. Her relationship with Sam has so many possibilities. The Detective is very protective. I could tell he cared. It will be interesting to see what develops. The story is well written and has unexpected twists that kept me off balance. The dialogue was realistic and helped move the story along. The ending was a shocker. I enjoyed the writing of Alexa Padgett. I enjoyed A Pilgrimage To Death.
I received a copy of this book which I voluntarily read and reviewed. My comments are my honest opinion.
