Kelly Kennedy thought her life was finally on track. Engaged to the man of her dreams and with a baby on the way, she reassures her five-year-old daughter, Bree, that the father she picked for Christmas still loves her.Unfortunately, war veteran Tyler Manning has been away most of the year. Recovering from PTSD isn’t easy. Rather than worry Kelly, Tyler spends his time traveling to Afghanistan to … Afghanistan to work at a children’s charity he founded.
Kelly decides to distract Bree with promises of a pet for Christmas. When Tyler is taken hostage by terrorists, she finds it hard to convince Bree that they will truly be a family in time for Christmas.
A Pet for Christmas is a sequel A Father for Christmas. While it can be read as a standalone, you’ll get more of the relationship aspect between Kelly, Tyler, and Bree by reading A Father for Christmas first.

This audiobook, the second in the series titled A Veteran’s Christmas, continues the story of Kelly Kennedy, her daughter Bree and the man they have both fallen in love with, Tyler Manning. A man that returned from Afghanistan suffering not only from PTSD but also from guilt.
He’s now back in the Middle East working for a foundation to build a sports place for children.
Tyler gets captured as Kelly deals with a risky pregnancy.
The seriousness of the story was a reminder of what not only the soldiers but also their loved ones go through. Not just in war, but also when they return a shadow of themselves.
Action packed , it’s a story that will touch your hearts. A story about the dangers of war, but also about hope, love and new beginnings.
The narration by Elizabeth Klett brought the story to life.
This is an excellent story of a woman who takes a chance on a man who has PTSD. Although their relationship is working as a family, Tyler seems to be spending more and more time in Afghanistan. Tyler’s torment is acute, but when the center in Afghanistan is blown up and taken by the Taliban, his PTSD becomes minor in the fact he is trying to stay alive. Kelly and Bree want him to come home, but Kelly has to hide the fact from her family that Tyler has been captured. The narrator for this story is emotional and her voice captures the heart of what the character is feeling.
A Pet for Christmas (A Veteran’s Christmas Book 2), my sixth read from author Rachel Ayala and the fifth this week, obviously I’m captivated by her writing. A captivating tale with a strong Christion undertone. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing. Elizabeth Klett’s narration adds to the book’s enjoyment & was perfect for this book. A Wedding for Christmas (A Veteran’s Christmas Book 3), the series is so well-written and captivating that no one can read just one (like a Lay’s potato chip). (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 – July 24, 2018).
If you read and loved A Father for Christmas, then you are going to love this.
We pick up the story around Thanksgiving, Kelly is pregnant and Tyler is is back in Afghanistan. This story will really tug at your emotions as we see Kelly deal with explaining to Bree why Tyler had to go away and the jealousy she is feeling towards her unborn brother.
We also get the story from Tyler as well, which I thought was great as we get to see and feel what is happening to him out in Afghan. When he get caught up in some trouble I think my heart stopped for a second and I just prayed that it would all be ok.
This was a brilliant read and very eye opening to the life of a vet dealing with life after the army. My brother has severed in several wars and whilst he wont talk about it, we are sure there is some kind of PTSD that he is dealing with.
The holidays should be a time of family togetherness and joy. For Kelly and Tyler, it’s anything but. A Pet for Christmas takes up where A Father for Christmas ended. Kelly, Bree and Tyler are on the verge of becoming a family, until circumstances throw a monkey wrench in their plans. It will take a Christmas miracle, a leap of faith and love’s unending strength to guide this almost family to their happily ever after. Ms. Ayala is an emotional writer. She seeks out the heart and speaks directly to the vulnerability that makes us human. Getting to read her wise words is always a pleasureable experience, but what I enjoy most is when the characters come alive. Elizabeth Klett adds to that realism with animated vocal range. Getting to experience the two together is a treasure not to be missed.
