THE CLASSIC NATIONAL BESTSELLER“A wonderful, splendid book—a book that should be read by every American, student or otherwise, who wants to understand his country, its true history, and its hope for the future.” –Howard FastHistorian Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States chronicles American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official narrative taught in schools—with its … up, throwing out the official narrative taught in schools—with its emphasis on great men in high places—to focus on the street, the home, and the workplace.
Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, it is the only volume to tell America’s story from the point of view of—and in the words of—America’s women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers. As Zinn shows, many of our country’s greatest battles—the fights for a fair wage, an eight-hour workday, child-labor laws, health and safety standards, universal suffrage, women’s rights, racial equality—were carried out at the grassroots level, against bloody resistance.
Covering Christopher Columbus’s arrival through President Clinton’s first term, A People’s History of the United States features insightful analysis of the most important events in our history. This edition also includes an introduction by Anthony Arnove, who wrote, directed, and produced The People Speak with Zinn and who coauthored, with Zinn, Voices of a People’s History of the United States.

It’s an old history book that most history texts have yet to catch-up to. It is inspirational only because I find hearing the truth much more fulfilling than fake history.
Great history of the US! It reveals all of the history you didn’t get in high school or even in college. You will be amazed at how historical patterns repeat themselves and how much damage this country has done to the world and itself. You will also be amazed to see that there have been protests like are going on right now that missed being mentioned in our history books.
The real history of this country. Should be required reading for every high school history class.
A real slant on American history. Excellant!
Everyone should read this book.
Excellent general history.
An honest view of American History, closer to reality than most histories of our country. Read this book.
Howard Zinn “tells it like it is” – being very clear about the actual way things were for all people on the continent, not just the white privileged ones. It is a scary, truthful, honest depiction of our nation’s history that I wish we had learned early in our lives.
Don’t mistake this for a comprehensive history. Zinn points out in the forward that it is not. It is a history that tries to fill in some of the cracks, to give a different viewpoint, a minority viewpoint. Zinn is certainly a cherry-picker, but he is honest about his cherry-picking and his viewpoint.
basic stuff for those who appreciate the views pf Zinn and the like
Don’t expect a sanitized history version as taught in school. I makes our famous leaders & heroes real people. The words are easy enough to read but what they say are sometimes painful & difficult. Not a book to read nonstop to the end, at least not for me. I read small episodes now & then.
The best way to learn about US history
Zinn is a master. This very readable history of the States should be required reading in middle school before the whitewashed nonsense they usually teach has a chance to take hold.
This is one of the most important US history books you can read. It is not the “nice” view of American history but it is still so important. Shows how far we have come and how far we have to go.
One of the worst ostensibly historical works of propaganda written in English in the past 50 years.
Every student of American history needs a copy of this book and no high school history class should be taught without it. It is said that history belongs to those who record it. We should all be grateful to Howard Zinn for recording these truths about ours.
If you happen to be a leftist, this is a great book. If you’re not, you may get mad a lot of times.
THE BEST HISTORY BOOK!!
nothing but lies and hatred for America.
Not much. Historically incorrect. Books that do the job are available and one is a four to five book series. This was a major disappointment that some one would use their abilities in such a manner. Five Thumbs Down.
