I loved this Regency romance with complex characters and a captivating story that kept me totally involved in all that was happening from beginning to end. I loved the attraction and undeniable chemistry between Miss Ellen Brooks and Viscount Leonard Stafford. “A Past to Forget” is book five in the Convenient Arrangements series by gifted author Rose Pearson and I look forward to what she will have for us next. If you enjoy well-crafted Regency romance, don’t miss this heartwarming read. I received an advance reader copy of this book from Booksprouts and am voluntarily leaving my review.
I love Rose Pearson’s stories! Each seems to have not quite perfect people having to overcome some kind of stumbling block, usually from someone outside the couple, and how they learn to bring forth the best of themselves, often working together, to overthrow their impediment. Lady Newfield Has been present in most of this series, as either a relation or friend to support the young lady, as was Lord Repingham, in this book, as our hero’s best friend. The language was a bit stilted in this story, earning it one less star, but I’ve read this book twice now, once as an arc, and once after it was published. I enjoyed it both times!
This has everything i look for in a great historical. Great characters Great plot drama this author is so good i just can not get enough of her work

This is another exciting and delightful book in the Convenient Arrangements series. A sweet tale of romance between Miss Brooks and Viscount Stafford. The book is action packed and full of adventure, and I thought it was exciting from beginning to end. It kept me on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next for the young couple. The plot line is great, the story is terrific and the characters are wonderful and engaging. Rose Pearson has done a wonderful job writing yet again, and I can’t wait to read her next story. This book was lots of fun and a definite must-read!
Loved the Characters, Not the Plot
I have read books by this author for some time, and I seem to go back and forth about what I think about her books. While I enjoyed the last one that I read, I had some issues with this one. I actually liked the hero and heroine very well. I thought they were excellent characters, both decent people who were shamed or looked down upon because of their outward appearance (though neither seemed too hideous!). But they quickly found acceptance in each other, brightening their worlds. As always, it is a pleasure to see two good, underappreciated people find each other.
But, unfortunately, their happiness was super short lived. In fact, they seem to spend most of the book apart, which I never like, and the blackmail subplot overshadowed the romance. Great characters, as were created here, deserved a better plot where we could really see and appreciate them without the overwhelming distraction of the cookie-cutter, no-shades-of-grey villain. The plot just infuriated me. I also thought that the language felt stilted and awkward in most places, and there were a few anachronisms thrown in here and there that made it seem odd as well. The other bright spot, aside from the H & h, was the best friend of the hero, Lord Renington. He was a bit of comic relief and the perfect kind of support for the hero. Again, I just thought this plot was unworthy of these incredible characters. I would have loved to have seen them in a different story that would have played to their strengths and explored their vulnerabilities instead of focusing on a vile person outside the couple.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
Viscount Leonard Stafford has been deceived. He is fearful of losing the woman he loves because he had been tricked into writing a letter promising to marry a woman in the past, and now he is being blackmailed. Can his friend and the woman he loves find a way to stop the blackmail? Or will this woman who wants him for his money ruin his life and his future happiness?

Another installment in the series Convenient Arrangements. The characters are lovable and are well developed. The story will keep your attention from the start to the end. Will Miss Brooks and Lord Stafford be able to find their HEA?

A fantastic story. This read grabbed me right from the start. It really pulls at the heart strings. The Author done a fantastic job at bringing the story to fruition and the Character building. I really loved how the Author Captivated me and had me on the edge of my seat. I definitely recommend

This is a clean story with only a few kisses. Also, it ends at the 83% mark, rest excerpt for another book. It is short for even a novella but I still felt a connection to the couple.
I found this enjoyable and not only enjoyed the main character’s but also the secondary character’s. I liked how we learn the reason why he broke the h’s heart. He truly thought he was protecting her. There is one very nasty villain who does get what is coming to her.
The h comes up with a plan to protect the H. It was the one thing I didn’t like about the story because the plan was the only thing to save the H. I couldn’t get over neither the H nor his best friend figured it out – lol.
No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, little on romance and clean. I recommend this story and author. (ljb)
Miss Ellen Brooks needs a husband, and she is surprised when her father arranged her marriage to Viscount Leonard Stafford who she does not know and fears he is an old man, but to her surprise he is not old. She is pleased with him and he seems to be pleased with her and things seem to be progressing very well for them. However, Viscount Stafford has things in his past he does not want made public. This is another great book by Rose Pearson with numerous twists, turns, blackmail, and intrigue. Will Miss Ellen and Leonard overcome these obstacles and reach their happily ever after?

Entertaining and interesting characters tell an engaging story. Historical romances are very entertaining. Fun to read intrepretations of what it was like. Love a good romance and following the journey of the characters. Good read.

What a wonderful story!! I loved Leonard and Ellen’s story very much!! I loved the involvement of true friends also. It was good to see Betty and Lady Newfield from previous stories in the series. Although this book is part of a series, it can be read as a stand alone story without having read the other books in the series. But you’ll want to read them all.

I loved it. An arranged betrothal between two people who felt inadequate for different reasons and find solace with each other. It is complicated when a woman from the H’s past comes to cause trouble. So much trouble he broke his betrothal with the h. The h supported by a family friend confronts the H to get to the bottom of the breakup. Once all was revealed, the h set up a plan to free the H forever. A wonderful romance. Great characters, passionately written and has an excellent storyline. A page turner. A must read. I highly recommend it.
What a good story. Ellen is such a likable character. Leonard, while likable, is also unsure, self-deprecating and naive. Ms. Pearson manages to bring together all the varying characters personalities to make it work. I would definitely recommend this book.
Thank you Ms. Pearson and Booksprout for offering a forum to express my honest feedback. Keep up the good work!

Rose Pearson has another hit on her hands with this Regency Romance. The characters are wonderfully written and the story line keeps you going till you finish the book. This is the 5th in the series and not one has been a disappointment. I’d highly recommend this series and any of her books.

A lovely regency romance. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the storyline. I swooned with them and cheered them on and was on the edge of my seat. Many emotions were evoked. Every time I finish one of her books I can’t wait for more!

We all have something in out past we’d like to forget right? Character Leonard (Lord Stafford) isn’t one who likes to fight for good, he goes along with what is told to him, not a strong man for the leading role. Good thing Lord Repington is a friend on Leonard’s side to help with Lady Moore and her blackmail against the Lord’s of the TON. Ellen is a strong character, standing up for what’s right more and more each day, of course she has the help of Lady Newfield, what a great character she is!. Ellen’s life is full of ups and downs, her father’s health, broken engagement (which to me would’ve ruined her, but didn’t), staying in London or going back home, how people see her, even her own father says she’s not beautiful, and her mother kind of stuck in the middle.
I love reading Rose Pearson books. They are true to the period and greatly entertaining.
This story is about an arranged marriage, that the bride is concerned about until she meets Viscount Stafford. He seems happy with the arrangement until a woman from his past shows up to wreck his happiness. What happens next is sad as he breaks the engagement. Will Ellen Brooks recover? Will either one of the find happiness?
