From the bestselling author of the Mrs. Pollifax books comes a new mystery habit to acquire. From the moment Sister John and Sister Hyacinthe reach the old house left to their abbey by a mysterious benefactor, their cloistered world begins to crumble. First, there is the wounded man hiding in the house, then the suitcase stuffed with money sitting at the bottom of the well, not to mention fearful … fearful apparitions in the night. Lord only knows what’s going on. That is, until the good sisters, armed only with their faith and boundless energy, set things right–even if it means a shocking revelation or two about ghosts, gangsters…and murder.

This author always delivers a good story. Wasn’t sure where it was going, but the main characters, two cloistered nuns, came through unscathed. Since I like a book that has a happy ending, this fit the post-holidays blues just fine.
Any book by Dorothy Gilman is a delight.
I especially liked this one because it involves nuns. These particular nuns inherit an old house and as we all know – old houses are filled with mysterious things and people. 🙂
Take two very delightful Benedictine nuns [out of their small Order of 17]; a fugitive who is on the run; a Tibetan monk; members of the Underworld; and children – of course there have to be children! – mix them all together and the end result is a very delightful book.
I like reading this year every few years [just like I like re-reading many of Dorothy Gilman’s book every few years.
One is going to have – in my opinion – a delightful and entertaining experience.
I seem to be stuck on that word – delightful! But it does cover how I feel every time I read a Dorothy Gilman book – delighted.
A favorite.
I read the book aloud while riding for two days in a rented moving truck. But I’ve also read it before that and afterwards too.
Dorthy Gilman can mix intrigue and humor quite well.
very entertaining, even if a bit dated… and still thought-provoking
I read every Mrs. Pollifax. As I get older, I appreciate her even more .
Fun story with the 2 nuns.
The title is misleading, but it is an interesting book. I enjoyed reading it very much.
Another of my old faves on kindle. Can Dorothy Gilman write a bad book? Anyway, it’s charming. Set in the early 1970’s and they are pretty much the way I remember them.
Very original and clever and a happy ending. A nun with “perfect faith” is hard to resist.
This was a highly enjoyable book! Set in the 70s and was way more than I anticipated. I thought it might be a bit of fluff to read quickly and add to my list of books read in 2020 to increase my count. It is a fast read, but definitely more than a bit of fluff.
Nuns inherit a house and estate, two come out of cloister to see what they have on their hands. One is rather reserved and disinclined to like people, the other is full of the joy of life and helping lead people to God. They go to the estate and find a whole lot more than a dilapidated house. There are free-spirited folks living off of the land, a belligerent sheriff, migrant workers, an injured man upstairs….then there’s the money in the well…
There’s humor, faith, human frailties, mysteries to investigate, rewiring of the way each person thinks and how they help others to see life in a different way. Finding kindred spirits where they least expect it.
SO GOOD!! I loved my time with the characters and the setting and premise.
I can definitely recommend this book and author.
Read many years ago. But enjoyed it then.
I love the Mrs. Polifax series and this book did not disappoint! Quirky, lovable characters who accidentally get themselves into trouble and back out again. A definite page turner and at times laugh out loud joy to read!
I LOVE Patricia Wentworth! I’m of the same age as the lovely Miss Silver, and I would love to be called into service in the CIA! Her books are winsome and wonderful! I think I enjoy them more than I do Agatha Christies. (Keep that to yourself! ;-P
Loved this book. Would love more like it.
This story will be especially enjoyed by those with a bit of Catholic experience. Maybe it’s not too likely, but so much fun! And the serious business underneath helps to make it all worth while. It will cheer you up. Prove most people are good and helpful…and a bit strange.
A bit simplistic
Her stuff is always fun.
delightful, vintage Dorothy Gilman
I first read this book many years ago and recently re-read it when it was a Boob Bub special sale item. I LOVE Dorothy Gilman. These are entertaining, and engaging without being as violent and “gritty” as most books are today. I enjoyed my trip into the past!!
This book was one of my favorite ones. It keeps your interest and entertains at the same time. Good character development and fairly believable. Perfect for a rainy winter’s day. Enjoy.
