“With her signature blend of raw primal passion and emotion, Addison Cain brings us a hot read guaranteed to warm up anyone’s winter night!” –Zoe Blake, USA TODAY bestselling author An assassin’s vow of chastity must never waver. To crave the flesh is to be distracted. To fail. Yet desire takes hold of reason each time he looks at River, his uninvited savior—the crass woman offering him shelter … his uninvited savior—the crass woman offering him shelter through a raging blizzard.
Stranded together in her cabin, it’s impossible to resist. The way her lips part as she sleeps, those soft brown eyes gazing at the fire… and a tongue sharper than any blade he’s buried in a target’s ribs.
He’s never known a woman, but her? He’s going to learn every last inch of River before the snow breaks.
A Night by my Fire is a stand-alone novella that contains no cliffhangers. Need to warm up in front of a fire? Wrap yourself in a soft blanket and enjoy!

I don’t want this book to be over!
I really hope it continues!
I want more of River and Stephen, this was such a unique read and I’m absolutely craving for more. I will be haunted by this book for a long time, I enjoyed it that much.
Heat: 3.5/5
Drama: 3.5/5
Suspense: 5/5
Romance: hmmm… this was a hard one to rate, there is something between them 1.5/5. This rating is in no way saying it’s bad, you have to read the book to understand.
Dark(?): 2/5
Cliffhanger(?): In a way Yes, In a Way No.
I’m a huge fan of Addison Cain, I will read anything and everything she writes.
This was very different than Addison Cain’s other books. Stephen and River’s relationship isn’t a traditional romance, but it’s still tamer than most of her Characters relationships. This is a good tame Addison Cain book for people just entering her world.
I’m a big fan of Addison. Her writing style, masterful language, and ability to really create universes that pull you in. Page-turning, hot and steamy, but still realistic. Sometimes there isn’t a happily ever after and that’s ok too. Cuddled up consuming this tempting morsel definitely kept me engaged and warm.
This is not one of Addison Cain’s darker stories, but that doesn’t mean that it’s nice and light and sweet either. It’s gritty and dirty and feels very real.
River lives in the woods of Alaska and is very happy living alone, in the way that she wants. Then she pulls up a stranger out of the freezing water and drags him back to her cabin.
I really like River. She is a take no bull kind of person. She doesn’t sugar coat anything. She isn’t going to politely lie to anyone to make them feel better. She’s going to lay it out straight to anyone, including the stranger. She tells him that no matter what he thinks he knows, he’s a babe in the woods to her. He points out that she’s not all that lady, she’s dirty and she cusses. She points out that the only reason he’s eating anything is because she went out to hunt it, kill it, and bring it back.
The Stranger, AKA Stephen, seems like he’s kind of a blank at the beginning. Of course, he’s just been through a trauma, and he’s been trained in a particular way, so it takes a minute to get his personality. But once it comes through, we find out a lot more about him.
This was something completely different from what Addison Cain usually writes, but no less a treat! This is not really a dark story, and that’s what I normally expect from this author! Its short, but still intense, and will still pull you into the world she’s created. It’s definitely worth the read!
Originally read in the boxset this was written for, and liked it then and still do so now. Of course the issues I did have with it then being left wanting are still outstanding here and I guess that as a reader I could imagine my own ending or continuation for these two strangers in the night, but i don’t particularly want to. It feels open and if the author ever feels the need to revisit these characters ( i hope she does) then it would carry on, but that would negate the whole Standalone thing though.
All in all the writing was good, the story engrossing but again just left wanting a more satisfying conclusion, and really that’s my beef not the authors’.
A self-sufficient woman and a dominant alpha male in a little wooden box…
WOW! Addison Cain’s fertile mind has done it again. Though it is a departure from the dark romances she normally writes this is a great book. You get two strong willed characters stuck in a small cabin, as you can imagine this creates a whole lot of heat. When I grow up I want to be like River, except I want to would want better cooking skills. It’s a cliffhanger folks! I hope we will get to read more about River and Stephen relationship in the future. I enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it.
Well written, filled with enough mystery to keep you reading and wanting more. The ending was a smidge upsetting, simply because I needed more! I’m hoping we see a part two 😉
I’m not sure of the actual time span this story covers.
A few weeks? A month or so?
It felt like no time at all.
I do know it was enough time for two souls to connect –
Both to heal in their own way:
Stephen to find the pleasure in human contact that he had never experienced. To understand acceptance, the unconditional kind. He sort of reminds me of a big overgrown junkyard dog. He snarls and barks but if you approach him as the alpha his bite seems tempered(?) – deadly but tamable.
And River – she just enjoyed indulging in the companionship. She is a tough woman.
I’m a bit pissed at Stephen but I understand. He knew she could take care of herself and in a way didn’t have an option. Still…
River – I would love to get her backstory! It isn’t necessary for this encounter but I’m curious especially after the little clues dropped at the end.
This is a true HEA for River IMO.
Not sure about Stephen but I hope he too found his HEA.
I love Addison Cain’s work. She’s unapologetic and fierce in her writing. In A Night by my Fire, she turns the classic damsel in distress nonsense on its head for a refreshing change of pace. River and Stephen are great characters. The plot is masterful in its simplicity. It’s an all-around great guilty pleasure read.
Addison is excellent at creating characters you become invested in and this story is no different. River is intriguing, Stephen is exciting and the dynamic between them is both hot and amusing. I liked the twist with River as the rescuer, and I liked the sparks that flew between these two while together. My only real complaint is I want more. It was too short for me, but then I make that complaint about a lot of her works.
Addison has done it yet again!! I Need more
This short story pulls you in and gives you the feels. She grabs your attention from the start and keeps you engaged the entire time.
In this short story River is a very strong independent woman who is a total bad ass. Stephen who was found by river has a mysterious past. These two may be at each other but there is so much chemistry there. If you love the love hate relationship books this is the novella for you. She leaves you with twist and knots she loves to give us these book hangovers.
Addison we need more with this cliffhanger. I am going to sit here pondering what is next to come. I love your work!
omg.. absolutely LOVED this. ive read all of this author’s books and this is a new kind entirely. different plot, scenario, and characters but still thrilling, full of action and adrenaline, and incredibly HOT. I was entranced from the very first page. im totally amazed by this author and as always, left with craving more. I can only hope and wish that this novella turns into a prequel of a much more longer continued story
New from Addison Cain!
This one is a quick read, but oh it’s so GOOD! The thing is, we don’t get all the information about the characters at all and yet I find myself glued to the pages and waiting for the fire to light it up. Boy oh boy…was that some fire!!! Really enjoyed it and thanks to the author for releasing this story.
A page turner to the core with thrill elements. What a gripping, captivating story that reads so realistic and spell binding. Loved it! This is an epic story between an unlikely pair. Lots of twists and turns. Addison Cain knows how to tell a story and reel you in every step of the way! I loved everything about this story, I want more of River and her cabin man! River is tough as nails and doesn’t’ take any crap. I highly recommend this book once you start you won’t be able to stop!
A Night by my Fire by author Addison Cain. From zero to sixty in heat and gritty deliciousness. This author sure knows how to keep you captivated- willingly!! Like a wondrous puzzle the pieces just fit. You might not know the whole of it yet it doesn’t even matter the bit of what you have is enough- always enough. If she would give us more I think our world would be blown. But what a way to go!!
Enjoy!!
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
What an unexpected ride! This story is unique and very sexy. Two characters brought together and forced to endure each others company in a small cabin…what could possibly happen? I enjoyed the characters development for the female and male lead. Their stories are a mystery and I like how the author slowly divulged critical character attributes and situations slowly letting the tension build up for the reader. There are twist and turns and be warned this story leaves you wanting more! Hoping the author continues this series and can’t wait to see what else might happen in the woods. Well done!
What a great story! This is short but intense. The author creates very complicated, interesting characters in a short period of time. Quite an accomplishment. Its fascinating reading about River and Stephen circling each other, like predators, and then the explosion or passion that follows. This book is steamy, dark and you will be left wanting more. I loved it!! Please, please Addison, write a sequel!
A Night by my Fire is a steamy, short novella by Addison Cain set in the arctic tundra. It starts off with a woman (River) saving a man (Stephen) who would be dead if she had not stumbled upon him when she did. Due to an impending blizzard River brings Stephen back to her cabin to nurse him back to help so he can be on his way ASAP. While in the cabin River and Stephen learn about each other…their very different personalities and experiences in life. I loved the sometimes viscous banter between the two but when the end came I wanted more. Hopefully their story will be continued…
