“With her signature blend of raw primal passion and emotion, Addison Cain brings us a hot read guaranteed to warm up anyone’s winter night!” –Zoe Blake, USA TODAY bestselling author An assassin’s vow of chastity must never waver. To crave the flesh is to be distracted. To fail. Yet desire takes hold of reason each time he looks at River, his uninvited savior—the crass woman offering him shelter … his uninvited savior—the crass woman offering him shelter through a raging blizzard.
Stranded together in her cabin, it’s impossible to resist. The way her lips part as she sleeps, those soft brown eyes gazing at the fire… and a tongue sharper than any blade he’s buried in a target’s ribs.
He’s never known a woman, but her? He’s going to learn every last inch of River before the snow breaks.
A Night by my Fire is a stand-alone novella that contains no cliffhangers. Need to warm up in front of a fire? Wrap yourself in a soft blanket and enjoy!

I’m sitting here typing and deleting, trying to find the words for this review. The storyline pulled me in immediately and the mounting tension of the environment and situation kept the tension building. Once they reached their destination, there was an almost volatile dislike and distrust between these characters. I’ve read almost all of Addison Cain’s works and this is the first time I’ve read one of her stories and was left with the feeling of abrupt loss. There is no love story. In my mind, there is no happy ever after. There is a very blunt and honest interaction between two people in a situation neither one chose. Would I read it again? Absolutely. Would I recommend it? You bet. I was lucky enough to be given a copy of this book and this is my honest and voluntary review.
This is a novella-length read one that I really enjoyed.
It is the story of River and Stephen, the former a woman living alone isolated out in the wilderness away from civilisation and the latter a stone-cold assassin who has been betrayed and left for dead by his former employer.
When River rescues Stephen from the water half dead their paths collide.
stranded together this hard man needs River for his very survival.
Stephen is cold analytical and extremely literal, River is his opposite hot-headed and unlike anything, he has ever known from his former life.
Slowly he becomes fascinated with the wild woman he is currently playing house with and when these two forces of nature finally collide it was epic.
This may have been short but it still had all the feels and the unfolding story had no trouble capturing and retaining my attention throughout.
Would adore a sequel to this as the ending was just so bittersweet, now that really would make my day as this feels like there’s still more to River and Stephen’s story.
I voluntary reviewed a copy of A Night By My Fire.

Addison slays me with her stories. This one leaves you wondering. I have a love/hate relationship with this book. River is a strong willed woman with a good heart and Stephen is all Alpha Male. Their story is so unlike any of Addison’s other work and will leave you twisted in knots. I am going to have the biggest book hangover from this book. Again though, Addison is able to reel me in with little more than a few words. I always get so lost in her writing, I forgot the real world around me. It’s like I’ve taken vacation to a different place entirely and honestly, I never want to leave.
Omg I love love loved reading this. I’ve been in a book slump where I just wanted something to feel anticipation or a rush of feelings. I am a big fan of Addison and I’ve ONLY read the ALPHA books of Shepherd, Claire, Jules. I love that ALPHA book. Anyways I decided to read another Addison book and seen I had this. So I started last night around midnight and I finished the remaining 50% today. This was a short book and that’s totally cool! It’s a finished story really, but I would love a continuation if Stephen ever happened to come back. Gosh that would be LOVELY!!! I really liked this book. The beginning was confusing until I realized River is the main character and she lives alone in a cabin away from civilization. She comes across a mysterious man who needs saving. . But the events that take place after that and between the end are amazing and I was really engrossed in this story. I have a mini book hangover for sure because. Honestly I first read Strangeways 2 nights ago 4stars, then I read Thirst a full night ago 5 stars, and last night I started this one. After strangeways I was curious to see other short works by Addison and this book did not disappoint at all!!! I love it!! Each book is so different and the characters have such drastic different personalities and I think its amazing that Addison Cain can make me think all of these books have been written by different authors!!! I love River and Stephen. Gosh I want more but that will probably NEVER happen, maybe its in the vault. Hahaha wishful thinking!!
Love all Addison Cain’s books. This was a quickey but a goodie I definitely enjoyed it.
Humans taste better than her cooking!
This thrilling, fun little piece had me in stitches more than once.
River lives in the middle of nowhere, in dependant and knows how to make use of what the land has to offer. Shabby, dirty, gritty but oh so empathic… Well… It’s there even if a little bit served wrapped up in sarcasm. Hehe
In comes Stephen. Stone-hearted? Njaanooo… I don’t think he is, he’s just got very bad people skills. But that is to be expected considering.
His blunt honest approach to everything, and his complete inability to recognise humour or piss-taking was wonderful to read.
He practically takes everything literally.
It’s fantastic to read and brings on so many funny situations.
All in all this little novella was a fab read. Great for when you need to lift your spirits a bit.
5*
This book was different than any I have read before with the gruff heroine and hesitant hero, but it was also confusing. It is a little hard to tell the internal dialogues apart and it got a bit confusing. One minute they are griping and throwing threats, and the next he wants her simply because he’s never had a woman before. There doesn’t seem to be any emotion in it, and it ends very abruptly.
I’ve read most of this author’s books, and I would have to put this one at the bottom of the list. Her other works far surpasses this one.
Having read everything by Addison Cain I was super thrilled to see that she was re-releasing her very first story I had not gotten my hands on yet. I was not disappointed.
A Night by my Fire starts off as a complete gender switch that we don’t normally see in romance novels. A woman finds a helpless man on the verge of death in the lake and reluctantly takes him back to her secluded house and nurses him back to health.
What I loved about the story was it wasn’t an instant romance. It takes a lot for the two characters to get along at the beginning and finally concluding with a hot steamy night by the fire.
Definitely worth a quick read. The ending left me speechless.
This book like all books Addison Cain writes is awesomely creative. How many of us have read the trope where the anti-hero falls into the lap of the heroine forcing her to take care of the manly man while injured? She put her own spin on it like she does everything else and it came out awesome! This is a shorter novel so not technically a full novel. That said as exasperatingly usual she leaves us wanting more. More resolution, more contact (wink, wink) and more story.
The heroine is straight from one of those Alaskan bush reality TV shows. She independent, strong and wily. The “hero” is a straight up conscienceless killer. Like usual. But also, like usual, she makes you ache inexplicably for the journey that got them there.
The heroine at one point said that this wasn’t a fairy tale with some happy ending and I guess I suppose it isn’t. With more of HEAFN than anything. That said I do hope we see them crash together again.
Knocked it out of the park like usual Ms. Cain.
A Night By My Fire. Although it a short novella read, you really get sucked into Addison Cains world. It’s different then her alpha/omega reads, but I’ve read so many lately this was a great break.
Anything with addisons name I’ve come to have high expectations! And to learn she’s been holding this one back is painful. It’s a quick hot read to distract and tantalize.
I wasn’t sitting by the fire when I was reading this story but it sure did feel like it from all the heat that was coming off the pages!!
My most favorite thing about Addison Cain as an author is, she knows how to give us, the readers, true depth to her characters. It is like the layers continually opening on a rose, and just when you think the character has reached its bloom, she shows us another level of emotion. But be careful, her characters always come with extremely sharp, abundant thorns. In this story, Mrs. Cain shakes up what for so long has become an almost cliché, predictable formula. In A Night By My Fire, it is the Male Lead that is the left for dead virgin, but by no means is he an innocent. Stephen is saved from sure death by the Female Lead, River. A competent, non-simpering, strong woman with her own demons haunting her. This complete role reversal of the “norm” is refreshing, captivating, and had me hooked all the way to the bittersweet end.
Let’s start out by saying this is not your typical Addison book this is.,…. sweet.
River is a young woman who lives by herself in the mountains. … . by a you guessed it river. She she has a heart of gold but is definitely used to taking care of herself and not giving into womenly ways.
Stephen is a military man who has been betrayed. He is not quick to trust nor is he quick to take help unless he absolutely needs it. He believes women are supposed to be pretty and quiet things that definitely don’t describe River.
They are unlikely pair that you root happiness for. It starts with river saving Stephen, and well the heat is there but when will the fire ignite?
For me this was a good slow burner, but definitely worth rereading.
Once again this is not your normal Addison book definitely not, a little too sweet for our diabolical author.
Oh did I mention Stephen is a virgin??!
This one sucked me in from the very beginning and, since it’s a shorter read, I didn’t put it down until I had read the last word. I’ve been a fan of Addison Cain’s for a while now, and she writes wonderful stories with characters that stick with you. This one is no different. It’s intense, sexy, and I can’t decide if I wish there had been more or if one of the reasons I love it so much was the vagueness of the whole thing. I love that I’m left with so many unknowns and my imagination went crazy trying to fill in all the answers. It didn’t go where I thought it was going to go, but I can’t imagine it having a better ending.
This book is a little different from the author’s typical books and I found it quite enjoyable. This is a short quick read between two people – one of which left in the wild the other surviving in the wild. I loved her character as she was strong, independent and completely capable. Stephen was an interesting character – the broody alpha for sure. I really enjoyed reading about how these two came together and then seeing the dynamics change between the two. I wish I could give it five stars but I feel like I need a little more from these characters and this story
Absolutely incredible! A short, hot read that leaves you wanting for your own cabin hidden in the wilderness. I loved the switch to the inexperienced male that still dominated without detracting from the strong female role. My only complaint…. I want more! An absolute must read from Addison Cain.
It’s the type of love story you only ever hear about. It may have a bittersweet ending but doesn’t mean you don’t enjoy the ride along the way. Who else could write something that captures you into the story and makes you never want to leave but Cain. Wonderful story fantastic characters and a great read. Love it!!
This is a short and sweet novella. Addison Cain’s stories never let you down but please note, this is a novella so it is a quick read. Don’t get your hope up for a full story on this one. If short stories are not your favorite then pass on this one.
I am literally blown away! And leaving aside all the steamy goodness that makes up this incredible thing I just can’t get over Addison actually gave us a stand-alone! I must have died and gone to heaven.
Dark and dangerous nights
Addison Cain weaves her magic again! Not as dark as her other work yet still gripping and unique.
River and Stephen met under dire circumstances and were at each others throats, maybe because both have pasts that are hidden that have formed them into the people they are today. Both strong in their own ways they find a common ground in lust. But their futures lie in different directions, or will they collide once again? More please!
Erotic, enthralling and entertaining!
