Legacies were made to be rewritten.Assassin Hawes Madigan wants to do right—by his family, his organization, his city, and the man he’s falling for, ATF agent Christopher Perri. But Hawes’s rules are being challenged by someone willing to kill for the old ways. To save his soul and his empire, Hawes must make an impossible decision: fight from the outside or bend the knee to win back his throne … his throne from within.
Chris is used to being the inside man, the one undercover. Now, he’s on the outside marshaling forces in support of the man and the ring of assassins he was supposed to take down. His mission shifted when he found something that’s been missing for ten long years—a home, with Hawes.
As Hawes and Chris make a dangerous play for control, the lines between allies and traitors blur. Trusting the wrong person could destroy the legacy Hawes envisions for the Madigans. But not trusting anyone, or each other, could mean lights out on their love and lives forever.
The King and King Slayer fight together in this thrilling conclusion to the Fog City Trilogy!

I hardcore love this series! I love the characters, the twists, the action, the pacing, and the sizzling chemistry. If you haven’t started the series, then pick up Prince of Killers today!
One of my favorite series to come out in a while. A New Empire picks up immediately at the end of King Slayer and the tension ratchets up gradually until the last page. Almost all the loose ends are tied up from the first two books, and Hawes and Chris get their HEA while readers are left wondering which of the other characters will be next to get involved in some sort of life-threatening situation that will make pulses pound and hearts race. This book is not a standalone and the trilogy should be read in order. Layla Reyne says it’s an homage to the days of episodic TV where you had to wait until the next week to find out what happened, and I’d say she did a wonderful job with that tribute. If you’ve got a couple of days to read, grab these three books, your favorite beverage and kick back for some top-notch entertainment ! *I received an arc of this book.*
A New Empire is the third book in the Fog City series. This series must be read in order to fully enjoy it. Concluding the main arc in the Fog City series, Hawes and Chris must fight with everything they have to survive against the onslaught from the malicious forces trying to rip them from power. Lines have been drawn in the sand, members have chosen their sides, and now the big confrontation is pending. Like the other books in the series, this book is action packed and full of drama. Sit back and enjoy the ride.
This series was so unexpected … I absolutely loved everything about it.
The intrigue, the betrayal and lies, the characters exploded off the pages, the twists and turns…I could go on, but I think you get my drift.
This is a three book series and my first with Layla Reyne. I’m not a fan of cliffies, and these were doozies, but the story arc for Chris and Hawes is concluded in A New Empire, so I was able to binge from beginning to end…whew, thank goodness! I could not wait to find out what happened next.
If you’re a fan of M/M romantic suspense, I highly recommend this one.
This book is apart of a series which I haven’t read book 1 or 2. I do feel that this book would be best enjoyed by reading the previous books in the series. I still liked the book as it was action packed and so many twists and turns with drama from backstabbers from all sides. I plan to go back and read the other books and re-read this book so I can have a deeper understanding of the characters backstory. Definitely worth reading.
The King and His Slayer!
In this concluding tale of two opposing men who feel in love against all odds, we see them continuing to fight within the Assassin’s organization. Lessons learned and trusts given to the wrong people had them scrambling to take back the control from those opposed to the changes that Hawes is determined to implement for the future of his organization and his family!
Hawes has been betrayed again and again. Out of time, can’t trust anyone except his siblings, the Police Chief and Chris somehow. Chris is conflicted because he wants to find his partner’s killer but at the same time he wants to help Hawes implement/carry out the changes for his organization. A very fitting end to the trilogy!
If you are into action, romance, twists and turns (so much that it’ll make your head spin) and conflicting emotions between our two main characters, then this is for you. But you have to read it in chronological order, IT IS AN AMAZING READ, I assure you!
What I Think: Plunging us back into the tale from where we left off, thank the Goddess, two of my favorite Mme. Layla characters step in to help Hawes and the hint of a lesbian romance has me thinking of the magic of a lesbian tale under Mme. Layla’s talented fingers.
The shock as things only hinted at and suspected in the prequel were proved true was so saddening for me that I had to pause and pace a bit before I could continue. The pain Hawes has to endure just to get his family safely out of this filled me with anger. Family should never turn on each other. It’s a basic law.
I keep getting floored by the truths revealed and just when I think it’ll stop, new information socks me in the gut. But oh the different types of love and need and healthy dependency in this tale makes me almost jealous. I fell in love with the king in part one, fell in lust with him in past two but in this tale, I worshiped him as he became the warrior King with a reason to fight, his heart and home on the line. I didn’t expect to love Dante more but oh that steadiness he gives the king every time, pouring himself out for him, holding nothing back as the Slayer does what he was made to do: partner his king and make him better.
This Authoress is truly mistress of her domains as she twists and molds as she likes, making the characters lifelike enough to step off the page and take on life of their own. I don’t know if it’s deliberate but that panic at the disco that she slid in there is so fucking apt! Madigan is playing for high hopes on one more run that could be his last.
Please, allow me to doff my hat to a perfect villainess. So perfect and evil that I’m in horrifying awe of her even as I love the Madigans even more for wanting to cut off ties with a bloody past but seeing the villainess in action, tells me the stock that the 3H’s come from. But as usual, the 3Hs were underestimated time and time again as they proved that what was a perceived weakness, was actually titanium-strong strength. The scheming and counter scheming had my head spinning, my heart racing and actual goosebumps as the set up of the past three years finally reached the point of no return. As Hawes crowns a queen and continues to scheme to win, not letting another betrayal slow him down, I had shivers running down my spine and at the end, I wanted to fucking roar with the joy of a hard-won victory. All hail the king and long live the queen!
And because this Authoress just loves to pour out her soul for us, she promised the spin-offs I desperately needed and was going to demand. Mme. Layla, I’ll not only hold you to that, I know you know the stories we need. Gimme!
Verdict? An action-filled, comfort tale that’s a keeper just for being sheer, unshakeable proof that true love does make you stronger!
You can read in this amazing series the evolution of the relationship and love between Hawes and Chris in a world of danger, betrayal, intrigue and action. In this 3rd book the story finished, but you need to read the previous 2 before this one to totally enjoy and understand the complex and interesting plot. This trilogy got me on edge since the beginning, it got me waiting for all the misunderstandings and miscommunications to stop, guessing when the ax were about to drop, but in the middle of everything, the love and trust of Chris and Hawes for each other was the breaking point, the only reason that everything finished well and of course, when all was solved and explained, they got their well deserved happy ending. (spoiler!!! sorry!!)
I received this book as an ARC and this is my honest opinion.
We are family
Get ready everyone and have an oh crap handle at the ready; this book is one wild ride full of twists and turns! We finally get to learn who the devious mastermind (and devious is a gross understatement) behind the coup is and if my suspicions are correct, all heck is gonna break loose in Fog City and at MCS. On a completely different note, the cameos were fun and clever to see in this series.
“No matter what, I will wait for you on the other side of the fog.” Oh this line and my heart. Hawes and Chris are entering a new phase in their relationship and I just want to be along for the journey. They make me so happy and are truly the other’s missing piece and safe place. I feel really bad for Hawes though. It seems like aside from Chris nothing is going right in his world and we still don’t know who all we can trust. It’s a good thing he has Chris, well-equipped friends, his fierce family and a steel backbone.
I’ve said it before but truly admire and treasure intelligent MCs and the Madigans along with Chris have that in spades. I appreciate people with a sense of humor and who respect the arts. I already knew clubbing was fun but this book takes it to a whole other level. I’m definitely a fan of the club music. Also, Chris’ moment with his niece is very touching.
My heart feels like it went through a blender but it came out brand new and improved. So much action, trickery and adrenaline rushes, Layla Reyne is the queen of suspense. I’m sad to say goodbye to Fog City but I have hope we’ll be able to visit again soon. An truly exceptional and must read series by a fantastic author.
I’ve been champing at the bit for this book since I finished the second in the series, and am so grateful to have had the chance to read it. It’s so hard to review this without giving away spoilers, but I’ve gathered enough of my thoughts to put a few things out there:
– there’s a satisfying ending to our MCs stories in this book
– the pacing of this book is just as fast (if not faster) than the earlier books in the series
– there are some awesome cameos that left me squealing with joy
– my two favorite characters in this series seem set up to get their own spin-off (please, Layla, I’m begging here, from down on my knees)
Once I started reading this book, I couldn’t put it down. As always, Reyne’s dialogue sparks on page, and the heat between Hawes and Dante is incredible. I’m sad this series is over, but can’t wait to see what’s coming next!
Wow!! What perfection! Third book in the series and this book was everything I hoped for and more. Hawes and Chris are stronger than ever. I love them so much. Finally all the puzzle pieces come together and what a fitting ending.
While I had an inkling in the end of the 2nd book, this book totally goes right into it. Not going to go into spoiler territory. This is dual POV and cannot be read as a standalone. The series is like a 3 episode fast paced tv series with mindblowing cliffhangers! I’m so in love with Chris and Hawes. Also the centre of the series is the siblings- their love and trust for each other. Also awesome cameos that made me go squeeee!!
Looking forward to Holt and Kane’s book! Also Helena ‘s! Please tell me Scotty will get a book? I cannot wait for the spinoffs! Also sad that the series is over!

The conclusion to Hawes and Chris’s story is finally here! From filthy docks and prison cells to posh clubs and high end board rooms the Madigans rule the city! But who will be the King in the end and who is the traitor? This time it’s all hands on deck, and each and every one has to choose where their loyalties lie and what drives them – greed or integrity. I loved the non-stop pace, the constant edge and the race against time. Told from dual POV this time Chris aka Dante finally finds direction and new purpose in life and Hawes receives the absolution he sought for so long.
The book starts right where the second left off, and it’s blow after blow for Madigan siblings. But they are relentless and not so easily defeated. Hawes together with Chris, Helena and Holt set out to bring back their empire under control and safety to their city. Despite the stress and tough time Hawes and Chris finally acknowledge their feelings, and those tender and passionate moments between them are few but so heartfelt. I liked how Hawes gave his burdens to Chris, surrendered himself to his care, and how Chris considered it a gift and cherished it as such.
Trust is difficult to come by, and when push comes to shove Madigans show just what the family means to them. The victory is hard won, but with the new day come new rules and new direction, one Madigans are proud to lead others in. Thrilling suspenseful journey for justice, love and a right to be true to themselves. Love this series! Copy received for my honest and unbiased review
A New Empire by Layla Reyne is the exciting conclusion to the Fog City Trilogy. The King and King Slayer must stick together, fight together in order to survive and thrive! The lines between friend and foe is blurred, secrets and lies are rampant and the risk is high either way they go. The story is thrilling, suspenseful, steamy and absolutely perfect.
I received an advanced reader’s copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving my honest post review and recommendation.
