This book is the first book of a series about The Spinsters Guild, a group of imperfect ladies who are almost “on the shelf.” Can Lady Emily help them find their perfect match before it is too late? Note that Lady Emily does not finalize her match in this story!

Very nice read. I enjoy Ms. Pearson’s work and books about ‘spinsters’. I think Havisham could have been a bit more developed. I actually really liked how Emily ended up having to marry her first husband and not being “rescued”. It forced her to grow up and depend on herself.
I did not find a lot of technical errors, which was VERY refreshing.
Looking forward to the next book!

When Emily is forced to marry an old ,fat Marquis she feels her life is over! She runs to Lord Haversham who she has feelings for., but he recently inherited his title, money and lands and sadly turns her down fearing he couldn’t handle the scandal it would cause. Emily is soon a widow and relishes her new found freedom! Although her nasty father tries to force her to come back home so he can sell her again she refuses. The only good thing to come from her short marriage is she has found an inner strength and courage she never had before! As rumors swirl around her she is now strong enough to ignore them. Suddenly some eligible girl who fear they have no chance of marriage and one in a similar situation she found herself in come to her for advice. She finds a new mission for herself and agrees to help these girls chances by counseling them. This the spinsters guild is formed!
I really enjoyed this book and the inspiration it brings to young girls whose lives are controlled by the men of the times! I love these regency books and love seeing the ones courageous enough to push against the strict rules of the ton! If u like regency novels them Rose Pearson is the queen of them! It feels as if she herself lived in those times. She makes the books feel so real you feel as if you are there yourself!

A New Beginning, book 1 in Rose Pearson’s Spinsters Guild, is based on a very original premise. Rose’s main character, has not only survived a tragic marriage but has grown into a strong, independent woman. She becomes a beacon of hope to young women in similar circumstances who ask for her help. The Spinsters Guild is born.
I was fascinated by the synopsis for this novel and had to read it. Rose Pearson has done a wonderful job in setting up this story. In a New Beginning she has developed her main character’s and created the world they inhabit. It is a world that most modern women have come to hate, where woman have few rights and are bartered like livestock in order to improve the family coffers. Rose Pearson draws the reader into this world as naturally as if you lived in it. The only complaint I have, is that as soon as I was fully engaged in the story, it ends! Yes, it ends in a cliffhanger! I will forgive her though, as I am thoroughly engaged in this story and can’t wait to start book 2!
Although I already had planned on reading the next book it’s a bit frustrating how it ended. I really don’t like her in this one. Hopefully she improves.
This is a fun introduction to this series. You’ll want to grab the next book immediately! Wonderful characters and an enticing storyline.
A lovely spin on my favorite regency romance! Although this book doesn’t tie everything up in a neat little bow at the end, it has me craving more of the story! I usually only love a book that ends with a happily ever after, this was such a delight, I don’t mind that I will HAVE to read the next in the series! Can’t wait to continue the story!
left hanging
This book is an introduction to the spinsters guild series, and tells the story of how it started. It is written well enough but I was disappointed in the ending, as it ends rather abruptly. Think of it as the first episode of a TV series. I assume you need to read the later books to finish the story.
I agree with some of the comments about her growing up and finding strength in herself instead of being saved. It was a good story, however, the repetitiveness was grating. The characters could have been developed more.
And I have to read the other books to find out the ending, which are basically a reprint of this book. No thank you.
I was so disappointed where it ended! I really wanted to read a little more before the next book. Too short.
Love this author and her sweet romances
Meek-as-a mouse Emily Taylor, daughter to the Viscount Chesterton, was pushed into marrying a lecherous older man by her greedy father. Emily realized that she needed to stand up for herself or she would be ill-used by her husband. When he suddenly died, Emily finally had the independence for which she had longed, and returned to London ready to become the brave woman she had so longed to become.
We watch the transformation of a young woman from an obedient, self-effacing daughter to an ambitious and uncaring father, to a young woman able to stand on her own two feet and say “no” to unwelcome advances and pressures. There are a few bumps on the way, as she experiences some “growing pains” trying to find a balance between the meek girl she once was and an abrasive woman that grates on people’s nerves.
A young man she had once loved, but whose father had frowned on their union, had caved to that pressure. Now, he finds the new Emily. Through much hard work on his part, and a slow-to-trust-again Emily, they gradually form a new, delicate tendre for each other. The new independent and self-confident Emily captured the attention of several young ladies who realized Emily had conquered the fears THEY now have, and they approach her with a plea for help. Thus is born The Spinster’s Club! A good, clean romance that has all the earmarks of an exciting new series.

A New Beginning
Rose Pearson
Another awesome book by Rose Pearson! She knows how to tell a story! This is book one in a new series called The Spinsters Guild, and I loved it! Can’t wait for book to to find out if Havisham gets the girl.

Rose Pearson was able to create a character in Emily an epitome of a woman of strength. Society’s norm is hard to conform sometimes. Emily has to follow her father or risk getting disowned when it was not indicated in the book whether or not she will be able to support herself if the latter happens. She tried to seek out her beau but unfortunately, that said beau has no backbone just yet. And Emily has to do what she needed to do. In the end, the baptism of fire which the characters have to go through had made them formidable. And it inspires as I look forward to the second instalment.
While normally I am pulled into the stories written by Ms. Pearson, this story lacked quite a bit. If you are looking for a quick read, this is it, but some further insight to the missing two years would have helped the story immensely.
Miss Emily Taylor daughter to the Viscount Chesterton was informed that she was to marry Lord Smithton he was the Marquess of Smithton and she had no desire to marry him. She spoke to the Viscount Havisham begging him to go to her father to ask to marry her arts runaway to Scotland so they could be married over the anvil. He refused her. She married Smithton and two years later she buried him. After her mourning was over she moved to London. She was highly gossiped about and blamed for her husband’s death. She paid no attention to the costs of and proceeded to go about London because she was now wealthy and a widow. She met two girls who were looking for husbands and ask her to help them. And Lord Havisham kept trying to apologize for how he reacted when she asked him to marry her. To find out what all happens and if there’s a wedding in the offering you have to read the book. It’s a quick easy read and a good book…
Quick Read! A Pleasant Regency romance and utterly delightful!
I just finished reading A New Beginning by Rose Pearson. This is book #1 in the new Spinsters Guild series. This is a quick, clean Regency romance and utterly delightful. The story features a young woman dominated by an uncaring father who is forced to marry an even more domineering and older husband. In a short time she is widowed and comes into her own personality no longer dominated . As she blossoms she confronts London society, her father, and an old flame who refused to help her avoid the forced marriage. In the process she aids a gathering of young woman who need help finding a match. This book sets the stage for many more stories. I cannot wait to follow the rest of this new series.
Lady Smithton is an independent thinking,
smart woman who was transformed from
a brow beaten daughter sold into marriage
to an older man into a confident, outgoing
widow upon her husband’s death.
The reader will be caught up in Lady
Smithton’s thinking process as she emerges
Into her independence from her father and
any man.
After a mourning period, she moves to London.
She becomes the talk of the ton which she
successfully ignores.
Lady Smithton is approached by several
single girls who need help in finding a suitable
match. So begins the sessions of “ The
Spinsters Guild”.
The cast of characters are cleverly crafted,
well defined, interesting and are very relatable.
The story is well written and captivating. It
mixes family trials, elements of loss, refusal
to love again or be dominated with
determination, independence, friendship,
growth and inspiration.
A Highly Recommended Read.
I volunteered to read A New Beginning. Thanks
to the author via Booksprout for the opportunity.
My opinion is my own.
Have you every read a story…only to want to read the next one as soon as you finished only to find out it’s not available yet? That’s how I felt when I finished this book, I WANT more!
A quiet, fearful, mouse of a young woman, becomes a strong independent lady, after an arranged marriage by her father. And then of course the rumors by the “TON”
She stands up to the rumors and her father; her past (for the most part). She has trouble forgiving Lord Havisham’s part in her past. Until her father shows up demanding more from her (again) when Lord Havisham is there also to give her the support to stand up to her father once & for all.
I am so excited to learn more of Ladies Bavidge, Crosby, Ferguson, & Thorton and their group in The Spinsters..
A great new start to the Spinsters Guild series by Rose Pearson with captivating characters and an engaging story that kept me entertained and intrigued from the first word to the last. I really liked Lady Emily Smithton who is confident, strong, independent, determined and loved her dynamic with the other characters. I look forward to reading more Regency adventures of the Spinsters Guild by this gifted author. I received an advance reader copy of A New Beginning from Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
