Make sure you grab a box of tissues and keep it close when you sit down to read this one. Two very different women are forever linked by their love for one baby and their lives are forever changed and tangled together. This is a deeply emotional story that will have you tearfully turning the pages.
The characters were developed wonderfully and the story line was handled with such finesse I was fully invested from the beginning. It also makes a mother think about how they would feel in similar circumstances. This was a heart-wrenching journey that I won’t soon forget.

Heather can’t quite believe this is happening, it’s the last thing they need, another baby. Let alone afford. They can barley afford the three girls they have, and with Kevin will being out of work because of his back – there is no way they can stretch things for a fourth child. It is impossible, they are barley hanging on as it is. She feels there is only one choice that this leaves her, and Kevin seems to not care.
Grace is about to make partner at her firm and should be ecstatic as she has worked so hard for this, but she is still struggling with having lost her father. The only family she had left. The one who was there for her in everything she did in life, as her mother died when she was young. Since his death, it has made her reevaluate her life. Her legacy… as there will be no one after her. Her biological clock is ticking and she doesn’t have much time left to find a mate, get married and then get pregnant. But there are options.
Heather makes one of the hardest decisions in her life, but she knows it’s the right one and she thinks she has found the perfect person for her child. Grace is surprised she is picked to become a mother, as she will be a single parent. But this is what she wants, she wants to share what her and her father had with someone she can love and watch grow. At the last minute Heather changes the stipulation of the adoption and the two are now intertwined for what may seem this baby’s whole life.
Can the two work together to raise this child and not make things complicated or will the child be caught in the middle with lawyers, courts and being shuffled around? Did Heather make the right decision after all, what about Grace? Was this what she thought she would be getting into?
This was a really good novel on the struggles that mothers, and women have. Whether it is raising a child, making a hard decision about adoption or being that parent that adopts and now has to make different choices. This novel really dives into the struggles women face in situations. Thank you to Forever Publishing for the free novel.
A Mother’s Goodbye by Kate Hewitt is a unique fictional novel that asks the question, “What makes a mother?”
In alternating points of view between two women: Grace and Heather. A story of sacrifices, love, loss, adoption, nature vs nurture, and what it takes to make these life-altering decisions.
A hard, but worthwhile subject to contemplate. The author did a good job of bringing up several fundamental questions.

Thank you to Forever( Grand Central Publishing) for this ARC and in return I am submitting my unbiased and voluntary review and opinion.
I am posting this review to my GR, Bookbub, Amazon, and B&N accounts.
This is the second book that I have read by this author and I can’t wait to read more of hers. The authors ability to weave such an emotional story about love, family, adoption and so much more keeps me wanting to turn the page. The characters in the story feel so real. Another great read!
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the copy. The views expressed are my own!
This was an absolutely heartbreaking book. Heather finds herself pregnant with her 4th baby. She has 3 girls and a husband that can’t work and money is super tight. She knows they can’t afford another child so she chooses adoption for her baby. Grace has put her career first her entire life and now wants a baby. Heather picks Grace to adopt her baby. What makes a mother? Being a birth mother or being an adoptive mother who has raised the child? This story is heartbreaking and emotional. It is told from Heather and Grace’s points of view and you get both sides of the story. This was a beautifully written story of 2 mother’s love for their child. I received an advanced readers copy and all opinions are my own.
I have never been so moved by an ending of a book as this one. I just broke down in tears and my heart will hurt for a long time.
This book was heartwrenching and very well written with the story told from two very different points of view. It also shows the power of a mother’s love!
I liked it very much. A couple of surprises keep you guessing.
I couldn’t put it down.
A different twist presented on adoption. Very realistic. A page turner and a tear-jerker. I could identify with both women and felt sympathy for both. Love this author!
Interesting story about an adoption that was difficult for both parties and presenting both points of view. Did not sugar coat the problems of either side. Well written.
Thought provoking
Poignant and page turning.
I couldn’t see how there could be a happy resolution but it worked out in the end. I would have preferred a different ending though. Too sad all the way through the story.
Excellent. Both sides of adoption thoroughly investigated. Bio moms are not to be forgotten. Adoptive moms can not want open adoptions. But please offer up thank yous for the mom who gave birth.
This book really hit home with me. As a young single mother I was faced with the same decision that the characters in this book were faced with. I wasn’t sure if I could read it or not. But after getting involved in the book I realized that it opened up a lot of doors on emotions that I had closed up. It was heartbreaking to say the least but a good read. I enjoyed it very much.
I think the author did a wonderful job with a topic that is difficult but sometimes necessary. Well written book. Literally couldn’t put it down.
Insightful, but I cried my eyes out at the end.
This was a really good book. It drew you in. You really got to know the characters. You really didn’t expect sone of the events that occurred. This was a well put together read
Although entertaining to read, I found the premise far-fetched.
