NOW A #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! An unflinching, darkly funny, and deeply moving story of a boy, his seriously ill mother, and an unexpected monstrous visitor, featuring stunning artwork by Jim Kay. At seven minutes past midnight, thirteen-year-old Conor wakes to find a monster outside his bedroom window. But it isn’t the monster Conor’s been expecting– he’s been expecting the one from his … the one from his nightmare, the nightmare he’s had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments. The monster in his backyard is different. It’s ancient. And wild. And it wants something from Conor. Something terrible and dangerous. It wants the truth. From the final idea of award-winning author Siobhan Dowd– whose premature death from cancer prevented her from writing it herself– Patrick Ness has spun a haunting and darkly funny novel of mischief, loss, and monsters both real and imagined.

This book is so wonderful! I loved reading this book and watching the movie. It was like a real thing that happened. The part I liked was when Connor decided to tell himself the truth about his mother. It was sad, but it made me realize that we can’t hold on to the things or people we truly love.
A beautiful story about life and death and about letting go.
There are few authors who make me feel things deeply enough to cry. For that alone, these authors earn a place in my favorites. To be clear, there are a lot of good authors that make me feel and experience the story they wrote internally, but that’s as far as it goes. I’m not a crier. Crying, physically crying, is a big deal for me.
There are two …
What a gorgeous, haunting book! Have the tissues ready.
So beautifully written. Definitely be prepared for waterworks, I cried so much while reading. Hits you right in the heart
I literally could not put this one down. I raced through the pages, dying to see how it all came out – and it left me in tears. Fantastic read.
Overall, I’m totally obsessed with this novel! Even if contemporary works aren’t something you typically enjoy, I feel like there were enough fantasy elements incorporated to compensate for anyone’s personal preferences. By that same hand, even if you don’t often enjoy children’s books, you might just make an exception for this one.
For my full …
Emotional Roller Coaster!
I just did a re-read while reading a few other books, and I forgot how truly amazing this book is. The real-life back story with the creation of this book looms large through every page.
I loved the movie and now reading it again, it was such a more visceral experience.
If you haven’t already read this, you need to …
Guys. GUYS.
I don’t have the words to describe my feelings, but I’ll try.
So. First things first: I sobbed. I know I’ve said that I’ve sobbed in other reviews, but that was NOTHING compared to how deeply this affected me. I read it in five hours, finishing at 11 pm, but I probably stayed up another half hour becoming a mess.
The thing is? I felt …
This is your “must read” book! I’m not sure what I can write here that could possibly begin to resonate the depth and beauty of this book. I was looking for a quick read never suspecting that this book would be one of the ones that will stick with me forever. The characters are so well developed. Spoiler alert…..you will definitely need more …
This was definitely the best book I’ve read in quite awhile! You can feel what Connor is feeling, his sadness and anger. I already bought another book from this author!
Read this book with a tissue, strike that, read it with a while box of tissues! This book speaks to the truth about how a child feels losing a parent. I would read it aloud to my daughter, but having cried through the last 50 pages I would never make it through.
It was amazing I have told so many family members to get this book and read it.
A very magical book.
