‘A Million Reasons’, the second book in Mark David Abbott’s John Hayes series sees the protagonist still suffering from the nightmares he experienced because of the events described in book one. He has left India and travelled to Hong Kong where he works in a dead end job for a financial firm. The past constantly haunts him, yet he can see no clear way to break free of the situation in which he finds himself. Then, as though his prayers were answered, he finds a huge sum of money credited to his meagre bank account. He has no idea who sent it, or why, until a mysterious text message insists he can keep the money as long as he kill a specific person before the end of the weekend! What a wonderful hook to keep the reader turning pages far into the night as the intrigue unfolds.
As I have come to expect from this author, the characters he creates are superb; full of quirks and with a depth that quickly makes them real in the reader’s mind. You find yourself not only rooting for the protagonist as he agonizes over the deadly dilemma he faces, but also the fate of the person Hayes has to kill. Although that situation in itself is enough to carry the tale, Abbott throws in a twist, if the murder doesn’t take place within the timeframe specified, Hayes will pay with his own life. Now the stakes are tremendous, yet the story still holds many a surprise for the captive reader.
Abbott’s previous novel in this series, Vengeance, was undoubtedly one of my best reads this year, and this, the sequel, does not pale by comparison. A great read and very highly recommended!
This is the first book I have read by this author, although it is the second to feature John Hayes. It is a very pleasant change to have a central character in a thriller who isn’t ex special forces or some kind of super-ninja, but more of regular guy who relies on his wits and sense of justice to navigate his way through the extraordinary situations he finds himself in.
The book’s blurb tells you all you need to know about the plot, so I’m not going to expand on that, but what I will say is that the plot includes some nice twists, the pace is brilliant, the descriptions of Hong Kong are really evocative and the characters are all really well described and very believable. I highly recommend this book, and I am going to read book one (Vengeance) very soon.
I did receive a complimentary copy of the book from the author, but have voluntarily written this review.
John Hayes doesn’t like his life, nothing is really as he wished it were after the death of his wife. Then one day he sees he has million dollars in his bank account, only it’s not his. There are strings attached to this money, not all of them are legal.
Should he refuse the money, or will he take it and possibly turn his life around? You will need to read the book to find out. I voluntarily read and ARC of this book.
What an exciting addition to the John Hayes series. The question is— what will he do with the million dollars? I was hooked from page one. A great adventure full of mystery and suspense. This is a great series. I highly recommend it.
A million dollars?!?! What would you do for a million dollars?
A Million Reasons picks up after Vengeance, we are taken on a journey with John Hayes. John is given a million dollars, he’s suspicious thinking there must be a mistake. When no one claims it he starts to enjoy it, then he find out what he has to do. This book is fast paced and full of so many twists and turns you just might get dizzy! I love how this series takes a ordinary man people can easily relate to atheists puts him into these unimaginable situations. If you enjoyed Vengeance, or just love a roller coaster ride then you need to read this book!
A great read. John finds himself in a tough spot. The storyline flows great. And has you on the edge of your seat, wondering whats going to happen next. Theres lots of twists and turns that makes this an incredible read. If you love mystery this is definitely the read for you. I highly recommend.
