From the bestselling author of The Girls of Mischief Bay and The Friends We Keep comes a twisty tale of family dynamics that explores what can go terribly, hysterically wrong when the line between friendship and family blurs… She recently broke up with her longtime boyfriend, she works from home and her best friend Jen is so obsessed with her baby that she has practically abandoned their friendship. The day Zoe accidentally traps herself in her attic with her hungry-looking cat, she realizes that it’s up to her to stop living in isolation.
Her seemingly empty life takes a sudden turn for the complicated—her first new friend is Jen’s widowed mom, Pam. The only guy to give her butterflies in a very long time is Jen’s brother. And meanwhile, Pam is being very deliberately seduced by Zoe’s own smooth-as-tequila father. Pam’s flustered, Jen’s annoyed and Zoe is beginning to think “alone” doesn’t sound so bad, after all.
Friendship isn’t just one thing—it’s a million little things, and no one writes them with more heart and humor than Susan Mallery!

Heartfelt, funny, and utterly charming all the way through!
I just finished this lovely book from
One of my favorite authors! Loved the multigenerational story. You won’t be able to put this down!!!
I have a love/hate relationship with Mallery’s books — I love that they always end so hopefully, but I really hate some of her characters. That being said, I love that I hate her characters because she does such a good job of creating people who can be so annoying and/or frustrating. Even though they frustrate me, I love reading books that can make me feel that strongly about imaginary people.
There were some places where the book dragged a bit (I’m not a fan of long sections of introspection or remembering), but other than that it was a fun, easy read. And Steven is particularly swoony.
R-rated for swearing and one detailed sex scene.
As in the previous two books in the series, there are several intertwining stories lines happening at the same time.
Zoe Saldivar realizes how alone she really is, when she and her cat get trapped in the attic of her new home, when the attic door slams shut. She works at home, her cell phone is down stairs and there are no windows to call for help. However, with ingenuity, she gets the door open and recognizes that she must make changes in her life.
It has been two years since the sudden death of John Eiland. His widow, Pam and their three children have painfully moved on. Jennifer (Jen) Beldon, Pam’s daughter and Zoe’s best friend has become an overly obsessive mother. Her husband, Kirk, has become a detective with LAPD, and she worries that his partner is a bad influence on him. Steven has stepped up, taken over his father’s business, and decided it was time to settle down. Pam thinks Zoe could be the girl for him. And when Zoe’s father meets Pam, he begins his own pursuits. A shooting and a pharmaceutical error, through all their lives into turmoil.
As with all her previous books, the author weaves engaging characters into a compelling plot, with amusing dialogue.
This story takes us back to Mischief Bay and the lives of Zoe, Pam, and Jen. This book delves more into Zoe’s life and what a web it weaves. Not to say we don’t also keep up with Pam and Jen and all that goes on with them and their lives and this trilogy wraps up nicely.
Even if you have not read the first two books in this series you will not be lost as this could be read as a standalone but why would you want to.
A story of friendships, relationships, new beginnings, a few surprises, humor, and more. Zoe finds a new love interest just as she receives shocking news that will change several lives forever. I loved the book but there were a few unanswered questions at the end.
This book was one of the best I have read in a long time. I could not put it down. The series is very good and the author takes her time developing and revealing different dimensions of the characters. Just when you thought you had the story figured out a new twist is seamlessly added to the story and you have to keep reading. I recommend the this book as well as the series:
Never go wrong when you choose a book by Susan Mallory
I’ve read several Susan Mallery novels but I have to say this one may be my favorite.
I immediately liked the characters and cared about their lives and what happened to them. I liked Pam and her relationship with her son and daughter. I also liked Zoe and her relationship with her father. It took a little time for me to get into Jen’s character because of her overprotectiveness with her son and husband, but I eventually came to understand her character as well. I could see Steven’s growth early on as he took on certain responsibilities that made me love him.
I don’t want to give anything away but I’ll say I loved how the characters lives intertwined with each other which caused twists and turns in the novel.
It was an enjoyable read.
okay – dragged a bit
I loved the series! I loved the relationship between all the women. They cared for each other.
I thought it was a great book. The characters were so realistic. A loving story about mothers and good friends who you can depend on.
Annoying
A Million Little Things by Susan Mallery
A book that tells about friendship. parenting. and finding out you are pregnant and how it affects you and your family and friends.
Zoe has finally realized the boyfriend she had invested 5 years of her life with just isn’t the man for her. breaks up and starts dating Steven, who is Pam’s son. Zoe finds out she is pregnant with her ex boyfriends baby, she talks with Steven and they decide to keep dating and fall in love.
Pam is a widow who loves her children. she has finally started dating after her husband died suddenly, she is dating Miguel who is Zoe’s dad, she reacts badly to Zoe finding out she is pregnant by her former boyfriend. and Jen who is a new mom making lots of mistakes, but learns from them through help by Lucas which is her husbands partner on the police force. I really enjoyed reading this book and seeing how the characters developed. it was a great book. I recommend it to anyone looking for a book, it is a good romance that has complex characters. I really love Susan Mallery’s writing style.
Honest treatment of characters. Good read,
