In this Wall Street Journal bestseller, FBI agent Mercy Kilpatrick must unlock the mystery of a mass murder, and the secrets of its silent witness…
For Mercy Kilpatrick, returning to rural Oregon has meant coming to terms with her roots. Raised as a prepper, Mercy is now relying on her survivalist instincts to defend her town from the people the law can’t reach. But this time, an … this time, an investigation calling up a dark past for her and police chief Truman Daly may be hitting too close to home.
A rainstorm has uncovered the remains of five people—a reprise of the distinctive slaughter of two families twenty years ago. Except the convicted killer is in prison. Is this the case of a sick copycat, or is the wrong man behind bars? One person might have the answer. The lone survivor of the decades-old crimes has returned to town still claiming that she can’t remember a thing about the night she was left for dead. As the search for the truth becomes more dangerous, Mercy fears that the traumatized woman may not have buried her memories at all. She might be keeping them a secret. And there’s a price to be paid for revealing them.

Sarah –
This is a new series for me. I loved both the mystery and the suspense in this story. Starting with the discovery of multiple skeletons during a flash flood, the story quickly becomes a complicated tangle of current crimes, twenty year old crimes, and a series of seemingly unrelated events that blur Mercy’s investigation even further.
I didn’t realise that I was jumping into book four of a series when I requested the book but I am very pleased that the story easily reads as a standalone and I was easily able to fall in with the characters and the slightly creepy, rural Washington setting.
Mercy is a great lead detective. I enjoyed puzzling through her quirks, her scars, and her almost stable love life. The contrasting roles and perspectives from Truman as chief of police and Mercy’s FBI investigation are interesting and I really enjoyed the interplay between the two.
I love that it took me far too long to figure out the whodunnit and I loved all of the red herrings as some characters, suspects, and crimes overlap and others don’t. Everything fits at the end, but the author really challenges readers with the complexity of the story.
Parts of this book are seriously scary, so it was a tense single sitting read for me. I enjoyed this and I’m excited to go back and start the series from the beginning.
Reviewers on the Wicked Reads Review Team were provided a free copy of A Merciful Silence (Mercy Kilpatrick #4) by Kendra Elliot to read and review.
I’ve read the entire series to date and eagerly await the arrival of books 5 and 6 to complete the saga.
Another excellent story in the series…
***I received an ebook copy from the author at no cost***
I’ve never read any of the other books in this series, but I absolutely loved this one! (For those like me, it can be read as a standalone too.)
This story is filled with suspense. I was glued to my Kindle, on the edge of my seat as I read. I loved that Elliot kept tossing it up and twisting things. Nothing felt predictable and I was constantly chomping at the bit for more. I needed to know what was going to happen, to see if any of my own theories would pan out, and to see what happened between Mercy and Truman.
I loved the spark between the two main characters. Even though Mercy didn’t see it at first, it was always there and I was always rooting for the two of them to end up together. (And how perfect, the FBI agent and the police chief fall for one another.)
I liked the plot in this one too. But, I also love crime thrillers and mysteries of any kind, so this was right up my alley. This book was fast paced and easy to read. The character development is great. This author does an amazing job of painting scenes with her words and was spot on with all the details.
Four stars to this novel!
Even though this book falls outside the scope of what I typically prefer to read by focusing almost entirely on suspense with little to no romance, I couldn’t put it down. Definitely an edge of your seat thriller that kept me guessing until the very end. Kendra Elliot is a fairly new to me author but I must say this story is one of the best I’ve read to date.
This story captured my attention from Page One and took me on a wild ride with lots of twists and turns. How much can one little town go through?!? I can’t wait to see what the author has in store for us next.
This is a thrilling addition to the series; the action, suspense, twists and emotional turmoil in this story is amazing. Families are being brutally murdered in a hauntingly similar fashion to the past, and anti-government extremists are once again causing trouble. Police Chief Truman Daly and FBI Agent Mercy Kilpatrick suffer some intense physical and emotional damage as the try to unravel the complexities and solve the crimes. Your heart breaks at various points in this story, and for more than just the main characters, the emotions and fears feel so real. It really has you on the edge of your seat. It was great to see characters from the authors Bones series make an appearance in this book. I love it when characters cross from one series to another, it creates a more complex world as a whole. This is an intense, heart pounding story that once started is really difficult to put down. I received an early copy from the publisher via NetGalley. This in no way influenced my review and all opinions expressed are solely my own.
