In this Wall Street Journal and Amazon Charts bestseller, there are no such things as little secrets… with something to hide.
Thirty years ago, an armored-car robbery turned deadly. The mastermind was captured. Four conspirators vanished with a fortune. One of them, it appears, never made it out of the woods alive. For Mercy and her fiancé, Police Chief Truman Daly, their investigation opens old wounds in Eagle’s Nest that cut deeper than they imagined. Especially when a reckless tabloid reporter draws fresh blood. It’s clear to Mercy that somebody in this close-knit community is not who they seem to be.
Some are still shattered by the heist. Some still have reason to be afraid. But which one will kill again and again to hide three decades of secrets? To land this case, it’s up to Mercy to unmask a familiar stranger before someone else dies.

Enjoyed this fifth book in the series but unlike the previous books, one element of this one is blatantly obvious from the beginning and it’s super annoying that it never occurs to either Mercy or Truman. The rest of the story is interesting though.
I really like Ollie and that poor kid is kind of the star of the show in this one. Man does that kid have a rough week! There is movement in Mercy’s family situation and I keep hoping that eventually that will get resolved. There are a lot of suspenseful moments in this one and lots of red herrings.
Another really good read from an author I am so happy to have discovered this summer!
I enjoyed this book from the first page to the last. It was realistic, scary and had a bit of romance, but I did not see the twists coming!
A Merciful Fate is another great entry into the Mercy Kilpatrick series. This time around we find Mercy and her fiancé, Sheriff Truman Daly, in the midst of planning their wedding and honeymoon. It was so nice to see Mercy doing normal, womanly bridal things. She’s finally starting to believe she is not just a machine, but a woman deserving of love and a family.
Of course, another case is thrust into the middle of their lives when Ollie, Truman’s ward, finds a body in a cabin in the woods. The body is soon connected to a thirty-something-year-old bank robbery so Mercy is off and running on the case.
Truman is busy himself with strange vandalism cases that continue to perplex and upset his town. Is someone in his town not who they seem to be? Suddenly his and Mercy’s cases cross and all hell breaks loose. Truman must risk it all to save the woman he loves, but will he be in time?
I thoroughly enjoyed stepping back into Mercy and Truman’s world once again and gave this book four stars!
As always Kendall Elliott writes a great suspenseful romance. Her character building throughout the book series is excellent. It’s beautiful how she develops the relationship between Rose and Nick. Looking forward to the next in the series.
THIS REVIEW IS FOR BOTH THE AUDIOBOOK AND EBOOK VERSIONS
Well written with a perfect balance of action, suspense and emotional scenes. Great characters and the narration was perfectly performed. I recommend this book.
This series just keeps getting better! After Ollie and his dog find a human bone in the woods, skeletal remains are found and they are discovered to be the remains of a bank robber from an infamous robbery that has been a cold case for many years. Add in the vandalism of the B&B and Ollie’s tutor’s home and then the malicious assault of his tutor. Who is doing all of this or is it all related? I have really enjoyed this series and it has kept me going while packing my house for moving. Definitely recommend this!
Another wonderful read in the Mercy Kilpatrick series, but I didn’t expect anything less. This story brought us back to a less extreme plot but also brought us even closer to the main characters and those secondary characters we’ve been introduced to. The plot was still thick with suspense, intrigue and wholly engaging… I devoured it.
I’m at a point in this series where I’m not certain I want to start the last book, “A Merciful Promise”, simply because I just don’t want this fabulous series to end!
Gotta love Mercy and the family!
Mercy and friends encounter a tangled mess that hits close to home this time around! How they handle the backlash is admirable.
It is entertaining like all her books
I swear Mercy should have never come back to Eagles Nest. Every book either she, Truman or someone else in her family is getting hurt or dying. She would have been better to stay away. Well besides all that this was another fabulous book in this series. Mercy is on the hunt to solve an old case. I did actual guess somethings during this book early on but it was still a great listen. I can’t wait for the next book.
I did not see that coming!
Great book!
Another case for Mercy to solve is discovered by Ollie while walking in the forest. A set of bones in a shed with empty bank pouches. It does not take long for her to figure out it must have something to do with the bank robbery from 30 years ago. But nothing about Mercy and her life is ever simple and things quickly take a dangerous turn. People are hurt. Loved ones lives are on the line and Mercy will not rest until the peron responsible is brought to justice. She just never thought it could be who it turned out to be. Mind-blowing twist and turns and a thrill ride I won’t soon forget.
An absorbing mystery about a 30 year old armored-car robbery. Mercy and her FBI team get the first big break about the age old mystery when a body is discovered turns out to be one of the robbers.
As Mercy and the FBI are trying to uncover more about the heist, Truman and the Eagle’s Nest police department are trying to figure out who is vandalizing two prominent women in the town’s businesses. Are these two things completely unrelated or is there a thread tying them together.
An enthralling read from start to finish in an engaging series.
Kendra Elliot is a must-read author! I eagerly anticipate each of her new books and novellas. The Mercy Kilpatrick series is a favorite since book one, and this one continues the excellence. I am particularly picky about characters that are strong, determined, but believable, and Elliot delivers, each and every time.
When skeletal remains are found in the woods, FBI Agent Mercy Kilpatrick finds herself and her fiance, Police Chief Truman Daly, embroiled in a decades old mystery. Who was the mystery driver of the getaway car that escaped with millions of dollars in armored car money? Why did one of the robbers wind up dead in an abandoned cabin in the woods near Eagle’s Nest? And will someone kill to protect a decades old deception? Fast paced and entertaining. I couldn’t put it down!
***I received an ebook copy from the publisher in at no cost***
This book is part of Elliott’s Mercy Kilpatrick series, but you don’t need to read all of the books to be able to understand things. It can be read as a standalone.
This was a fantastic suspense read! I loved that there was a bank heist involved in the book, because those are some of my favorite plots to read. The author did a great job of bringing on the mystery and the suspense in this one. I was glued to my kindle, anxiously awaiting what was coming every time I got to the next page.
I enjoyed the dynamics between the characters. There’s a rapport that’s clearly been established in previous books, which has now left me feeling the need to go back and start at the beginning. Everything was written so vividly I felt like I was living inside the novel.
Mercy was a bit much at times, but I liked her as a character overall. Elliott has created an amazing cast of characters, and even though the book followed a central plot, each of the characters had unique things going on in his/her life that only added to the excitement.
Give this one a go if you like suspense, mystery, and crime type books.
Four stars to this novel!
A MERCIFUL FATE (Mercy Kilpatrick #5) by Kendra Elliot is the latest romantic suspense, mystery/suspense, FBI procedural, who cares what you call it, cannot put it down read featuring one of my favorite main characters! This is a series I recommend you read in order because each book builds on all of the characters’ relationships and secrets besides giving you new crimes and/or mysteries in each.
Special Agent Mercy Kilpatrick is thrown into a notorious, decades old bank robbery when the skeleton of one of the robbers is found in a decaying cabin. The mastermind of the team was captured and put in prison, but the money and the rest of the gang seem to have disappeared into thin air. Just as Mercy starts reinvestigating the robbery, a young tabloid reporter shows up in Eagle’s Nest asking questions that are threatening long buried secrets.
Police Chief Truman Daly gets pulled into the investigation when the reporter is found dead in her car. Some of the people have secrets and are not who they appear in the Eagle’s Nest community. Whether they are related to the old robbery or not, they want them kept secret. Mercy and Truman need to reveal them all to find the threat to their community and family. Some long held friends and neighbors are not who or what they seem.
This series just keeps getting better and better. The old, unsolved robbery is an intriguing crime plot that builds the suspense and threat level at a rapid rate throughout the story. I was very surprised throughout the resolution. I love Mercy and Truman’s relationship and how Mercy is learning to navigate their relationship while balancing everything with her long held prepper lifestyle. All of the secondary characters are becoming fully fleshed out characters that I look for now in each book.
My only slight criticism of this series is that I believe Mercy’s father may have a point. Not his indifference or stubbornness, but the people around Mercy seem to be injured or killed quite frequently. In most series the main character is injured or almost killed so many times you wonder how they can keep recovering and working, but it is those around Mercy who suffer this author’s wrath.
That said, I highly recommend this series and Mercy! I always look forward to reading these books and catching up with all of the Eagle’s Nest community.
I found it very interesting, based on life styles that I was unaware of. Easy reading, story flows.
I have read each book in the series and have enjoyed them all very much.
I love this series. Kendra Elliot have hit on a very believable character. I think I read some where she will have #6 coming out. I can’t wait.
Elliot delivers with the latest in the Mercy Kilpatrick series.
Mercy and Truman work to put together the pieces of a decades old bank robbery and murder. Engaging characters and the twists and turns of this story will have readers fitting the pieces of this puzzle into the full picture.
I highly recommend this book to fans of the contemporary romantic suspense genre.
