Read the New York Times bestseller that has taken the world by storm Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon–the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him “the bitter neighbor from hell.” But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn’t walk around with a smile … around with a smile plastered to his face all the time?
Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents’ association to their very foundations.
A feel-good story in the spirit of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand, Fredrik Backman’s novel about the angry old man next door is a thoughtful exploration of the profound impact one life has on countless others. “If there was an award for ‘Most Charming Book of the Year, ’ this first novel by a Swedish blogger-turned-overnight-sensation would win hands down” (Booklist, starred review).more
I loved this book, I love those I love the new family next-door in the fam I loved this book, I love those I love the new family next-door and if you love really smart and witty stories you’ll love this book as well. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes the heartwarming ending. So good!
One of the most enjoyable, delightful books I’ve read.
Even though a book about a cantankerous old man might normally seem pretty boring, A Man Called Ove is anything but. From the very first chapter, Backman manages to catch your attention and forces you to care about his main character, an effect that is not lost through the rest of the story. After reading it, there’s just something about the mundane, the everyday, that is a little more meaningful.

Enjoyed it immensely!
I loved Ove so much and resonated with his difficulty in understanding and connecting to the world around him.
So fun to read this book. There is a reason it’s a bestseller! Ove is such a fun character and I love his musings and journey. Very entertaining, and nothing seems to be lost in the translation to English.
I listened to the audio version of this book. I loved it! It was quite different than anything else I’ve read. I loved the seeming evolution of the crusty old guy and then discovering what was behind his actions and what he was really like all along. The cast of characters was just that…quite the cast of characters.
Exceptional!
Wonderful uplifting book with memorable characters
If I were Ove’s neighbor, I would say he was unpleasant to be around. Grumpy and short tempered. That impression would change as I got to know Ove. I discovered that he was a widower. His wife had been the center of his universe. She was the chatty one. Ove slowly learned how interact with others and actually enjoyed doing it.
A masterful epic, well worth the time. There’s a reason Tolstoy’s classic has remained relevant through the ages.
An enjoyable read, but not without its’ irksome moments and the writer saved us from a deterministic end (for which I was grateful)!
Without a doubt one of the better stories I’ve read in a long time. A tough nut with a heart of pure gold, Ove is filled with surprises. In some ways the character reminds me of Vincent from the film “St. Vincent” played by none other than Bill Murray. The pace, characterizations and mixture of humor, sadness and bright rays of heart felt sunshine form a perfect balance. I can’t wait to read the other books he’s written now!
This might be the most heart-wrenching book I’ve ever read, and I mean that in the best possible way. It struck the perfect balance between drama, action, and heart. I’ll be thinking about it for days.
Loved the writing, characters and the story. I rarely reread anything but could see myself reading this again.
This makes your jaws pain with laughter and without your slightest notice, your wet eyes will warm up your heart and soul. This is the story of Ove that will make you wonder why grumpy people act the way they act, strike the romantic cord in your heart, show you a compassionate world with empathetic lens. Must read. Vibrant illustration by Fedrick Backman. By far one of his best books. “Ove was black & white & she was the colour”. Beautiful!
everyone knows someone like Ove. Really nice book.
I love Ove and all of the characters in this book!
