Read the New York Times bestseller that has taken the world by storm Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon–the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him “the bitter neighbor from hell.” But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn’t walk around with a smile … around with a smile plastered to his face all the time?
Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents’ association to their very foundations.
A feel-good story in the spirit of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand, Fredrik Backman’s novel about the angry old man next door is a thoughtful exploration of the profound impact one life has on countless others. “If there was an award for ‘Most Charming Book of the Year, ’ this first novel by a Swedish blogger-turned-overnight-sensation would win hands down” (Booklist, starred review).more
It was outstanding !!
The beginning made me think it was sad, maybe a bit morbid, but little touches of realism kept me reading. I think we all know a person like Ove. We think we would never be like that, hopefully, yet…our choices and understanding…are weird, funny and true.
I loved this book!! Love, loved it!!! You have to stick it out through the first few chapters to get to know the characters. They’ll take you on a funny, uncomfortable, inspiring journey that’s sure to leave an imprint on your heart.
Actual rating: 3.5
I think I have a thing for crotchety old men in feel-good books. It was realistic, heartbreaking, and hilarious. A nice, light read.
I’ve, so typical. Made me laugh
I loved this book! What a lovely original story!
This was my favorite book in 2017, because he Ove, the main curmudgeon worked his way into my heart as I read on. In the first few chapters, Ove is looking for a sure fire way to kill himself. As the story unfolds, you discover his wife has died of cancer and he cannot seem to live without her. One time his next door neighbor, a pregnant women from India saves him and they become friends. You can’t help love Ove and his steadfast love of Volvos. I heard they made a movie of this in Sweden, but there are plans to bring this to American theaters in the near future.
By the choices I made above, I loved this book! IT IS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS i HAVE READ. I have recommended it to all my family. Very, very entertaining.
This was a wonderful book. I recommend it to everyone.
This was a funny, witty story that has some sadness and manages to turn out a somewhat happy ending!
This is a delightful tale of an elderly Swedish man who definitly qualifies as and ‘Old Fart.’ By the end of the book you will love Ove!
OMG! I loved this book. Completely amazing and humorous. I enjoyed every minute reading about the life of Ove.
An outstanding character study. I found this story to be one that completely involved me and caused me to mentally search for folks in my own experience that were “Ove”.
One of the best books I’ve read in a long time. It felt so real. I fell in love with the characters and think about them often. I’m so glad I picked this book up.
This book is a treasure.
What a wonderful book
I didn’t know what to expect with this book. A quirky curmudgeon of a man patrols his HOA every day – and yes, stay with this book. It only gets better, the depth of character grows with each chapter and you will absolutely love the ending.
Loved it! Reminded me of my father, my husband, and other “over-the-hill” men!!
I started out disliking the main character. He reminded me of other people I knew. By the end I was weeping for him. Great book.
One if the best books I’ve read this year. I’ve is a curmudgeon of sorts whose life has been turned upside down. I love how his character develops in this story.
