Read the New York Times bestseller that has taken the world by storm Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon–the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him “the bitter neighbor from hell.” But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn’t walk around with a smile … around with a smile plastered to his face all the time?
Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents’ association to their very foundations.
A feel-good story in the spirit of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand, Fredrik Backman’s novel about the angry old man next door is a thoughtful exploration of the profound impact one life has on countless others. “If there was an award for ‘Most Charming Book of the Year, ’ this first novel by a Swedish blogger-turned-overnight-sensation would win hands down” (Booklist, starred review).more
I actually read MY GRANDMOTHER ASKED ME TO TELL YOU SHE’S SORRY first, (I know, shocker), so when I read this, I was already familiar with Fredrik Backman’s writing style. Which I love. I would read his books forever, TBH.Anways. ABOUT THE BOOK! I read this a while ago, so I don’t remember it TOO well, but I know that I hung on to every word. It just pulls you in. I was a weeping mess by the end of it. I recommend it to everyone.
Well written novel about a man who finds life again after his wife’s death. Funny – makes you wish it would turn out that way for every widow or widower.
I got this book on a recommendation from my daughter. This guy seems so ordinary. He reminded me of my dad and my husband. There are some places that pulled at my heart strings.
I fell in love with this grumpy old man and his zany neighbors. This story is full of heart, and is the most beautiful reminder to be open to those around us, and see beyond the exterior.
A Man Called Ove is a stunning fictional work, where the characters truly come alive. The story centers around a grumpy, older man, who lives alone and finds irritation and conflict in the world around him. As the story progresses we begin to really get to know Ove, and understand his past and the reasons for some of his less “social” traits. A heart warming story that alternately made me laugh and cry. A warm, heartfelt read.
