A bus full of children is taken hostage in this “screaming hit” (The New York Times Book Review) from the bestselling author of The Never Game and The Bone Collector.Along a windswept Kansas road, eight vulnerable girls and their helpless teachers are forced off a school bus and held hostage in an abandoned slaughterhouse. The madman who has them at gunpoint has a simple plan: One hostage an hour … has a simple plan: One hostage an hour will die unless the demands are met.
Called to the scene is Arthur Potter, the FBI’s best hostage negotiator. He has a plan. But so does one of the hostages—a beautiful teacher who’s willing to do anything to save the lives of her students. Now the clock is ticking as a chilling game of cat and mouse begins.

Always twists in a Jeffrey Deaver story.
This is one of the best books that I have read. I couldn’t put it down until I finished it!
Pretty good book. Starts off slow then grabs your attention
An older Deaver book but super. The characters were so lifelike, you could feel their emotions.
Read this long ago, but remember it as a very good read. Enjoyed the movie also.
Deaver did not disappoint…this was a GOOD read!
Deaver consistently hits the mark. Always a surprise!
This book was one of the most intriguing books that I have read recently. It was informative providing insight into hostage situations. I could not put it down until I had the situations resolved.
I like everything that Jeffrey Deaver writes – he’s an amazing author. Just when you think you know how everything is going to end, he throws you for a loop!
I love Dever. Always has such twist
For the most part, I enjoyed the book although I only gave it 3 stars as the actions of the main female character just didn’t seem realistic. But then again, it is fiction.
No one does plot twists and turns like Deaver. Extremely good read and hard to put down.
An older one of Deavers but his skills were well developed even then. Entertaining too!
Great writer and great book
The characters were well-developed, and I LOVED the completely unexpected ending!
Jeffrey Deaver is my very favorite author simply because he never disappoints! What an incredible imagination that man has; I can always count on being so enthralled that everything else is forgotten – including sleep.
The kidnappers were hideously drawn characters. Psychopathic murderers , rapists, and pedophiles. To put the helpless deaf girls at their (non-existent) mercy was awful. I had to skip over pages of violence that were sick to experience. Why do authors believe their readers want to watch that? If I had a physical copy of the book, I’d throw it away!
I like this author’s writing and have read several o his works. They never fail to please.
Lived up to my high expeditions for Jeffrey Deavers’s work – always suspensful and always interesting characters
