In a matter of seconds my entire world changed, and it was in that moment that I stopped living and simply began to exist.
In my grief, I sent a letter to the first boy I ever loved. I hoped in writing it I’d find some peace from the nightmare I was living, some solace in my anger.
I didn’t expect him to write back. I wasn’t prepared for his words, and I certainly wasn’t ready for the impact … ready for the impact this soldier would have on my life. A deep-rooted hate transformed into friendship, and then molded into a love like I’d never known before.
Sergeant Devin Ulysses Clay did what I couldn’t: he put the shattered pieces of my heart back together, restoring my faith in humanity and teaching me how to live again.
But now that I’m whole, I have a decision to make. Do I return to my life as I knew it and the fiancé I left behind, or do I walk away from it all for the only man to ever break my heart?

I’ve been living in hell, but you won’t hear me complain.
These men depend on me, as I do them, and this brotherhood is the only family I’ve ever known.
The Army saved me from a callous mother and a life on the wrong side of the tracks that was quickly spiraling out of control. So unlike most of the men in my platoon, going home wasn’t something I longed for.
I was content overseas, spending my days defending this country that gave me my life back. Fighting became my new normal … until her.
A letter from Katie Devora—a letter that I almost didn’t open. Her words put a fire back inside of me that I didn’t know I’d lost. She gave me hope during a time when I was fighting every day just to stay alive, and now it’s time I fight for her.

This beautifully executed story had me feeling the intent behind every printed word from the get go, barely a paragraph into it and these well crafted characters drew me into their world, and had me hanging desperately onto every word. Their touching story captured my heart, had me feeling the pain of their loss, and rejoicing in their moments of joy. It was a moving reunion story filled with moments of hope, excruciating loss, and brimming with the promise of true love. Being a story told from dual points of view I had my reservations about it, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was blended together seamlessly, I have to say it was downright perfect! Definitely one of the best reads that I have had the pleasure of reading in a long while, loved every minute of it, and I highly recommend you give it a try, you will not be disappointed!
This book had so much emotion in it. I felt everything. I had so many tears for both Devin and Katie. The story felt like it was based on real life experiences. I wanted more and couldn’t put it down. A must read.
I love this book!! It was a beautiful love story about kids that never forgot or got over their first loves. The military lifestyle is a difficult lifestyle and reading those emotions on top of the revived love story just kept me reading and not wanting to put the book down.
Soldier who falls in love with his pen pal. He is a wounded warrior and finds that he knew her from before.
I was searching for a “pe pal romance” when I came upon A LOVER’S LAMENT and was so glad I read it. The pen pal part did not disappoint, but it was the outstanding story that evoked such vivid emotions tied to Katie and Devin’s tumultuous lives and almost missed romance.
If you love a second chance romance with a girl and the guy who was her first, you will love this story. The circumstances under which she writes to him after 10 years is opens an unexpected window into his life and how her returns impacts it.
My heart got lodged in my throat from the very first pages. After that it plummeted into my stomach, squirmed around there for a few chapters, then jumped back into my throat, before pounding its way out of my chest and running away with the hero!
Warning, if you’re a soldier or veteran’s wife like me, you will cry! Then you’ll cry again. And again! But you will love every word you read and every tear you shed for these characters.
This is the second book I’ve read by BT Urruela, and the first by K.L. Grayson. Katie and Devin’s love for each other crosses the world, pulling them apart and pushing them back together in one of the best second chance romances I’ve read.
The strength they both have, and the absolute need to find their happily ever after, pulls Katie and Devin through to the other side even though their journey was harder than anything most young people have to survive.
K.L. Grayson is a master at her craft. Along with BT Urruela, they wrote the best book ever! Katie and Devin’s story is one filled with every emotion ever experienced by anyone. Reading this book brought me to my knees, I couldn’t put it down, and I didn’t want it to end. This story shows that you can go through love, loss and tragedy, and can still open yourself up to someone and slowly heal. I highly recommend A Lover’s Lament!
Such a beautiful story about love, loss, regret and forgiveness
OMG the feels!!
Absolutely amazing story!
Devin and Katie have such a story. I felt all their emotions through the whole book. Hooked from page one.
So. Good.
It’s really hard to put into words how great this was.
For sure have a book hangover. I’m going to need a couple days before starting something else.
This is my first book that I have read of BT Urruela’s. It is a fantastic read.
This is a story about high school sweethearts whose relationship ends unexpectedly one day. Fast-forward 10 years later, Devin is in the Army and Katie is dealing with the loss of her father from a drunk driver who happens to be a military veteran. Katie seeks help from a therapist who suggests that she participate in a military pen-pal program to help her understand the life of military personnel to help bring closure and acceptance of her dad’s death. The caveat is that she must write these letters by hand and mail them. Once she receives the list of pen-pals, her never forgotten first love Devin, who is at war, is on the list. Having not seen or spoken to him in 10 years, she has the chance to vent her frustration to him for her loss of her relationship and the loss of her father. Will Devin and Katie reconnect? Will they both be able to put closure in their lost love for one another? Will Katie get closure for the death of her dad and finally forgive the soldier that caused his death?
This is a book you will not be able to put down. Each chapter title has a song that coincides with the content of that chapter and these two authors were spot on in choosing the playlist to go along with the roller coater of a ride you will take. Each character has their personal struggles that they go through and you will see that even through brokenness and anger, they are able to help each other through their trials. The details are spot on from the military scenes to the hospital scenes. I have yet to see such attention to detail. I cannot say enough things about how great of a read this book is.
If you are new to male romance novelists or to BT Urruela’s work, read this book. He wrote the male POV and KL Grayson wrote the female POV. They flow is seamless and you would not know that this book was co-written if you didn’t read the front cover.
I found this “gem” of a book accidentally but let me tell you I am so glad I did. The second chance love story of Devin and Katie is told with such compassion and understanding and respect. The entire book is filled with love and loss. Forgiveness and acceptance. Katie and Devin share such an amazing and heartfelt chemistry that just “pops” off the pages and into your heart.. The letters, emails and phone calls they share are a story within themselves and truly beautiful. The pain and loss that once consumed them both shatters and makes way for the healing and forgiving they both need. I am a new reader to this author and definitely a fan. Please do yourself a favor and pick up this amazing book.
