The Great Chicago fire burns down the factory that Hetty and her older sister works. Being rather desperate, one of them will have no other option than to become a mail order bride. When Hetty finds out that the man she is in love with has a relationship with her sister, she takes the hard decision and sacrifices herself. She leaves for the unknown, but she would never expect what she will … discover upon her arrival. How will she feel about her “wifely duties”?
Jeremiah McAllister is struggling to overcome his past wounds. Having lost his wife recently, he has completely cut his feelings. When Hetty arrives, he is rather bitter and insulting. He prefers spending all of his time with the cowboys, doing everything possible to avoid his new wife. Having built emotional defenses all these years, will he be able to give love another chance?
A series of misunderstandings between Hetty, Jeremiah and the rest of the Phillips family keep perplexing the situation. When his heart gives in to her love, he will need to make up for his past behavior. Is Hetty’s heart big enough to forgive him? An accident is all it takes to change their relationship forever.

3 stars . This was a good story though not that well written, being tedious and repetitive at times. There were some surprises thrown in though and I did like it enough to finish it.
This is the second story I read from this author and I really loved it and she packed a punch in this one. Sisters losing both their parents early and the two oldest had to work to keep them alive and in their house.
The oldest decided she had to become a mail order bride and sent letter to the man who accepted her letter.
Her sister found out about it but she knew her older sister was in love with someone in town.
The man only wanted her sister and the youngest two to come and the others could find ways to work thins out.
So the second sister took the train tickets and packed for herself and the two youngest sisters and slipped out at night before her other sisters woke up to find them gone.
They had to go to Wyoming territory and then take a stage in the snow to a fort north of Laramie and it was a rough time, then her fiancé or rather her sister’s, didn’t show up for several days.
Boy this story is so good and has so much going on some good and not so good. Her husband is angry because she wasn’t the bride, he expected but there was nothing her good do about it now.
Anyway he runs a ranch and it’s snowing and things are going from bad to worse. This story is one that is really hard to put down. It is also one you really need to read as it is so darn good. I highly recommend this very good and intense story.
This is a mail order bride story that comes from a hardship of two young women, Kitty (23) and Hetty (18) trying to raise their 3 younger sisters in Chicago at the time it burned. With no work they were trying to get a permanent solution for the family. Kitty being the oldest wrote to an ad from a rancher in Wyoming that stated he would take a widow with kids. However, when he got the letter from Kitty he agreed to her and the two youngest. 2 months later when Kitty got the answer back, Hetty found out that Albert the grocer that had been bringing them some vegetables and meat had fallen for Kitty and Hetty could not make her leave him to go out west. She takes it on herself to fulfill the ad. But, when they finally arrive Jeremiah is not happy with her and calls her a child. They do get married and when they arrive at his ranch finds his wife just died 2 months earlier after having their daughter and now the daughter was sick too. Jeremiah does not think Hetty could care for the baby but after the first night she put her knowledge from helping in the hospital nursery in Chicago to work to save that little baby. With Jeremiah so angry at himself for “killing his wife” and nothing that Hetty did made him happy, he started leaving early and coming home late not seeing any of the family. This is a hard story to read but is a story that I am sure a lot of mail order brides fell into. But the strength that Hetty showed in everything that she had to face it gives you hope that she will find the crack that will finally open up his heart to her. The characters just come to life and the story is very believable.
Another great historical western romance by Aurora Hanson who once again brings strong characters and an entertaining story line. The author does a fantastic job building her story and describing both her characters and scenes in vivid detail, taking you back in time and making you feel as though you were there. I loved and highly recommend this book.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
Hetty is a wonderfully written character. Her heart is in the right place and makes a decision for her sister’s happiness. What Hetty ends up with is an extremely bitter man. I understand his anger about the switch, but the way he treats Hetty is way beyond wrong. Hetty falls in love with Jake’s family and chooses to love Jake, in spite of Jake, which is a true reflection of our relationship with God.
A well written story that kept me turning pages the story flows smoothly from page to page. Hetty gives up a lot to move to Wyoming as a mail order bride with two of her younger sisters to meet up and marry Jeremiah McAllister. He has lost his wife and now has a new born to raise but he can not look after the farm and a baby. He feels he can not love Hetty. These two have a lot to go through before they get their happy ending.
