This was a real nail biter of a book with some chilling bad guys, a twisty plot, lots of action and a very satisfying conclusion. I loved the character of DCI Logan and he has some great throwaway lines. I’m delighted to see that this is the first in a series and can’t wait to read the rest.
The first I’ve read of the series and have ploughed into the next so I must have enjoyed it. 🙂
Love DCI Logan.
Need something new to read – found this series- read the entire series currently available one after the other. Can’t wait for the next one. Funny, serious, well-written Scottish crime novels. EXCELLENT.
The characters are well developed and the team banter is funny as a counter to the horrific things thrown at them.
Heart-Thumping, page-turning Scottish thriller. Loved it.
This novel delves into a disturbing subject: a serial killer who kills children. So not a “happy” read but overall a good read for a crime thriller. I will warn you: I was very frustrated when towards the end I realized that sections of the book that were italicized were describing events that happened years earlier. If you know that going in, those scenes make more sense.
A fast-paced, enjoyable read!
I liked this book. I liked the characters and I thought the story was well paced with twists and turns to keep it interesting. There are a couple scenes of graphic animal cruelty that are disturbing, but thankfully the author did not dwell on those scenes. I thought the author did a good job in building his investigation team and can see the potential for developing these characters in the future books in the series. I would have like to have known more about the main character’s history, but those details will probably be shared in later books. The story involves a seasoned chief detective who put a serial child abductor and murderer in jail years ago. The bodies of two of the boys had been found, but the third was never recovered. The detective continues to try to find closure for the third boy’s family by periodic interrogation of the incarcerated perpetrator. Things are complicated by the fact that the perpetrator suffered a head injury at the time of his capture and he is now apparently unable to fully comprehend the world around him. Then another boy is abducted with all the trademark details of the past abductions and the chase is on to find the copycat criminal before the child is killed. As a reader, I liked that we were brought along as the pieces of the case start to fit together. The only part that seemed awkward to me was the role of the obnoxious old newspaper guy and I wanted to know more history about the perpetrator in the active case and how that person evolved into such an evil demon.
I enjoyed this good Scottish Detective story.
Very well written and characters well developed
I enjoyed this book immensely. CID Logan is one of my favorite characters.
Excellent Scottish detective novel.
Kept me guessing to the end.
Keeps you on the edge of your seat
Loved this story! Action packed, page turning, superb twist at the end – loved it from start to finish. Main characters were pretty well fleshed out and I would recommend this book to any detective story loving reader.
It’s always good to find a new author with a distinctive tone and voice that you enjoy. While the abduction of a child is no laughing matter, it’s lightened by the humour in this story and the way it draws the characters in the investigation team together.
Is there a copycat killer on the loose or has DCI Jack Logan put the wrong person away? That’s the question at the heart of this police procedural, set in the Highlands of Scotland. It’s a fairly standard storyline in crime fiction, lifted by the author’s delivery and the development of the main characters, which allowed them and the book to grow on me the more I read.
With plenty of action, false trails and an exciting climax, there was a satisfying conclusion to the story with all loose ends neatly tied up.
My only dislike was the cruelty inflicted on a cat. I’m not sure the graphic descriptions added anything to the story.
Another new mysteries for me, picked it up because it was based in Scotland. I found this a great read, surprised as it was a free purchase. I am however going to purchase the rest in the series as there is a great sense of place, witty dialogue and good character development. Not for the faint of heart as there are gruesome scenes. Unfortunately All too believable. Reminded me of Stuart McBride and Denzil Meyrick
I had trouble reading this book, due to poorly constructed sentences. I’m a speed reader, but I had to slow down or even stop when these errors jumped out at me.
Wonderful dectective work! Step by step the mystery is solved.
