From the New York Times bestselling author of the Pucked series comes a romantic comedy about instant attraction, second chances, and not-so-little white lies.Sometimes I need an escape from the demands, the puck bunnies, and the notoriety that come with being an NHL team captain. I just want to be a normal guy for a few weeks. So when I leave Chicago for some peace and quiet, the last thing I … quiet, the last thing I expect is for a gorgeous woman to literally fall into my lap on a flight to Alaska. Even better, she has absolutely no idea who I am.
Lainey is the perfect escape from my life. My plan for seclusion becomes a monthlong sex fest punctuated with domestic bliss. But it ends just as abruptly as it began. When I’m called away on a family emergency, I realize too late that I have no way to contact Lainey.
A year later, a chance encounter throws Lainey and me together again. But I still have a lie hanging over my head, and Lainey’s keeping secrets of her own. With more than lust at stake, the truth may be our game changer.

When a beautiful woman falls into RJ (Rook)’s life, he doesn’t know whats hit him. He likes that she doesn’t recognize him for the famous professional hockey player that he is, and her innocence and awkwardness draws him to her. Spending time together in Alaska while he was hiding from the craziness of his life, meant something to him that he didn’t even realize he’d miss until he had to go home without giving his beautiful genius a way of contacting him, nor telling her his real identity. Oops…
But when the two cross paths again and it’s apparent that Rook isn’t the only one who may be keeping a huge secret, will the two of them allow themselves a second chance?
I’ve read a lot of hockey romances. Some I’ve loved. Some I’ve been meh about. Some I’ve downright disliked. But I gotta say that Helena Hunting’s hockey romances are some of the best on the market and A Lie for a Lie is just yet another way she proves she’s truly the queen of hockey love stories. Rook and Lainey are downright swoony together, so perfect for each other. I loved the way they got to know each other after meeting again and coming into each other’s lives. And I especially love the way he proves he’s one of the sweetest bbf’s ever, that he’s truly the guy she met and fell for the first time around. Oh and let’s not forget that some of the Pucked favorites make cameos and I got to fall in love with Violet and Alex and Randy all over again. I’m now waiting impatiently for A Favor for a Favor!
4.5 STARS!!
A Lie for a Lie, is a sexy second chance romance, standalone, and the spin-off of one of my top favorite reads, the Pucked series. This was a fabulous start to the brand new series, All In. I was hooked from page one.
Rook and Lainey’s story is deliciously sexy, fun, and heartfelt. But will all of their lies, and distrust destroy their chance at happiness? I really loved and enjoyed following their journey.
The story is beautifully well written, and the character development is fantastic. I love Rook and Lainey’s chemistry, and their connection. He’s a swoon-worthy hero who will keep you turning the pages.
All in all, A Lie for a Lie is swoony, sexy, sweet, and packed with memorable characters from the amazing Pucked series. What more can I ask for?
I’m so in love with this new release! Likable characters that you will fall in love with, easy to read storyline and a sport romance like no other. Heat level galore, chemistry sizzles from the start and a journey that just will make you smile are just some of the reasons this is a must click. If you read this authors work before you won’t be disappointed!
I’ve wanted to write a hot hockey romance for sooo long! Thank goodness – Helena Hunting did it for me. Check out this sexy second-chance romance!
Helena Hunting is a newer for me author and I am loving reading her words. In A Lie for a Lie, we get a fun rom-com about second chances with great characters and a story you easily get lost in. Rook needs to get away. An NHL player, his life is a constantly filled with the demands of a famous and popular athlete. So, he decides to escape to Alaska. What he did expect was the woman that literally fell on his lap.
Rook and Lainey spend a blissful few weeks together. It was perfect, but then life step in and they spent a year separated until life intervened again. Can they have a second chance? This was such a sweet and charming story that was heartfelt and fun.
Happy reading!
Helena Hunting has done it again. She delivers a book that hits you right in the feels.
Rook isn’t just your normal guy, he’s the captain for an NHL team and he is one of the best players in the league. The press and the pressure are a lot, and everybody deserves a break, so he heads up to Alaska for some peace and quiet during the offseason. When a gorgeous woman, quite literally, falls into his lap and has no idea who he is, he is immediately drawn to her.
Lainey is headed to Alaska for research, she never meant to fall into the handsome guys lap on the plane, and then find out he is staying just down the road from her. A few weeks in Alaska is just what they both needed, but when an emergency takes Rook away, they both realize they never exchanged contact information. Fast forward a year later and they run into each other again, both have secrets that they must confess, but will those secrets bring them together? Or keep them apart for good?
I absolutely adored this book. To me this wasn’t a typical Helena book, but it was still one of her bests. Rook and Lainey aren’t your typical Helena characters, but they are equally as lovable. I also LOVED that we got to see the Pucked clan in this book, and they actually played a bigger role than I thought they would! This to me, was a feel-good romance, and Rook is the type of guy we all want for ourselves, steadfast and loving he was just such a good guy. One of my favorite books of 2019 for sure!
This book is so good!
I read it in one sitting and had a lot of laugh out loud moments as well as Heartbreaking ones and swooned over RJ so many times.
Although I don’t usually read books with the twist founded at around 70% in , I enjoyed this one because it’s the same great writing style, flawed characters and a love story that won’t go smoothly before it can bloom at it’s fullest.
I needed to search how dolphins are matting, honestly that scene was hilarious.
Can’t wait to read the next book!
A Lie for a Lie is a delightful story between an awkward genius and a hockey player who just wants to be ‘unknown’ for a while. I loved the setting in Alaska; thats a unique setting and Hunting does a good job of making you feel a part of that setting. I also loved the meet-cute between Lainey and “RJ” because it is so something I could see happening. It was just one of those super embarrassing things that happen and it was really endearing.
The story has a slow burn feel to it because these two initially don’t really know each other, but they are attracted to one another. Then, when they start acting on their feelings, they both decide not to rush. Anytime a couple is forced together in an isolated location I think it builds a really interesting love story. Both Lainey and RJ are likable characters that show maturity and there isn’t the games that some characters play. Rook is seriously swoon worthy. He is primo book boyfriend material for sure! While part of the story takes place in Alaska, that is the past. These two meet up again, by chance, a year later in Chicago and they both have some ‘splain’ to do.
It wouldn’t be called a Lie for a Lie if Lainey and RJ were being totally honest with each other. RJ is really Rook, a professional hockey player. He is thrilled that Lainey didn’t know who he was and he could be a little anonymous; she obviously wasn’t a “puck bunny”. Lainey keeps a secret too but Rook doesn’t find out for awhile. I LOVED the Alaska part of the story. I enjoyed the Chicago part, but not as much. I felt like when they were in Chicago and back to “reality”, there was some unnecessary angst and y’all know I can’t stand that. Thankfully, Rook has a sister who keeps him from being a clueless man! But, I will say, A Lie for a Lie is still pretty low angst overall and for that I am grateful!
I had my reservations about Rookie. I didn’t know if I’d like him as the hero but I was proven to be extremely wrong about him. He totally won me over. I was laughing out loud within the first chapter and I didn’t want to put it down once I started. Helena definitely earns the title of my favorite author for a reason. Her writing style keeps you addicted and wanting more. Rookie and Lainey’s chemistry jumps from the pages! Can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.
A romantic comedy about instant attraction, second chances, and not-so-little white lies by the mistress of romantic comedies, Helena Hunting. Simply Fabulous!!!
A Lie for a Lie is book 1 in Helena Hunting’s new All In series, set in her Pucked universe!
I’ve been anxiously awaiting Rook’s (RJ) story ever since we met him “partying” with Lance & I’m happy to say Helena did not disappoint! His story is better than I could’ve ever imagined!
It’s the off season & RJ’s looking to honor a family tradition. At the same time, Lainey’s looking for some courage & independence. While their first encounter may not be “normal”, they find what they didn’t know they needed in the other…But what happens in Alaska, doesn’t always stay in Alaska.
What follows is the funny, hot, sexy story I’ve come to expect from Helena with a surprising twist along the way. My feelings while reading were all over the board. Smiles, laughs, frustration, love & yes, even a couple tears…and as a bonus, we get glimpses of our favorite Pucked guys & gals throughout this story. As always they bring the laughs & remind me how much I absolutely love this Pucked Family!
You don’t need to have read the Pucked series to read (& love) this book. So, if you haven’t read Helena before, A Lie for a Lie is definitely a great place to start!
Only Hunting can write a with a book that draws you in from the beginning with the chance meeting on a plane that everyone has dreamed of. Rook and Lainey in Alaska has the comedy of adjusting to living in the wildlife, along with falling in love. The lies between them come forth in Chicago where they meet again. Rook does a serious press to get back in Lainey good graces. Lots of laugh out loud moments followed by ahhhhhs.
Hunting’s characters are multi-layered with a sense of realism with a daily life that makes them so relate able. I loved seeing people from the Puck series in this book, it brought back all the good feelings. A lie for a Lie is a great start to a new series that I can’t wait to read more.
I read all of the Puck me series books and I loved them. The characters they zany, over the top Ed’s. I laughed through them all. So I was going into this expecting much of the same. I was wrong but it doesn’t detract from how good this book was. It is probably my favorite. I love Rook and Lainey. They are just so sweet together. Lainey is reminiscent of other characters like a perfect mix of Sunny and Violet with her awkwardness and nerdy side and being incredibly sweet and sincere. I could not put this book down and the audio book was amazing. I am really looking forward to more from this series.
I went into this book totally blind and was hooked right from the start. I loved the humour, the more serious parts and all the camels as well. Can’t wait for more of this series!
OMG. Cannot get enough of Helena Hunting’s book awesomeness!!!
This book was utterly fantastic and just another reminder as to why I love Helena Hunting and her stories so much! Reading this book I fell hard and fast for RJ and Lainey. I just connected so much with Lainey. She was so real with her anxiety, smarts, down to earth feels that I couldn’t help but have a massive girl crush on her. And RJ…Helena put it perfectly when RJ was in the elevator with Kody…ovaries exploding! RJ really is a big cuddly teddy bear. He’s so kind, considerate and loving. Seeing him fall in love with Lainey in Alaska and all over again in Chicago was absolutely beautiful and made my heart soar. From page one I was taken on this glorious journey that was Lainey and RJ’s story. It wasn’t without bumps in the road, but it was their happily ever after.
*And side note, when Lainey opens up to RJ at the cabin about college I totally teared up. Just the way Lainey trusted RJ with her heart and told him her deepest fear and experience only for him to lessen that fear and make her whole, broke my heart and put the pieces back together.
I loved seeing their relationship grow and blossom. To become more and more as the time passed. It was stunning. And it was absolutely fantastic getting to see the Pucked group together again <3
Helena Hunting knocks this book out of the park!

This is my go to author when I want a feel good book!! She excels at it! This is a spin off of her Pucked Series and if you know that series you’ll love this book! It’s funny and amazing all at the same time! This is RJ and Lainey’s story, RJ or Rook as he’s referred too by his teammates decides to spend time away on his off season and Lainey is going on a trip to work on her thesis for school. It’s a chance meeting and they find out they have things in common making it a pleasant encounter. However RJ wants a little normal he’s grown a bit tired of the fame from being a professional hockey player and his time a way is a chance to just enjoy his time even if a little lie has to be told. It’s a great story and I loved how everything is laid out and keeps you reading for hours not wanting it to end.
I fell head over heals for this book. Helena Hunting is one of my favorite authors. I love getting carried away in characters and stories. A Lie for a Lie was amazing and I loved seeing old characters from the Pucked series.
RJ and Lainey were a breath of fresh air. They had an interesting meeting on a plane headed to Alaska. Who would have thought they would end going to the same area and staying a couple miles away from each other.
They are in their own little world for six weeks. Things couldn’t be better until RJ has to leave I expectedly. Lainey is still in Alaska and they have no way to contact each other. A year later they run into each other. Both have been thinking about the other and wondering where they are. If he wants Lainey back he’s going to have to work for it.
And we get a spin-off from Pucked series and I couldn’t be happier and this couldn’t have been more perfect. RJ and Lainey story was everything. I can’t deny I loved seeing old friends in this story, but this couple has my heart all on it’s own right. The new team captain meets a college student on a flight to Alaska where he seeks a down time during the off-season. The second chance romance is beautifully written for these two. I can’t wait to read the next book in this new series.
