I just want to be a normal guy for a few weeks. So when I leave Chicago for some peace and quiet, the last thing I … quiet, the last thing I expect is for a gorgeous woman to literally fall into my lap on a flight to Alaska. Even better, she has absolutely no idea who I am.
Lainey is the perfect escape from my life. My plan for seclusion becomes a monthlong sex fest punctuated with domestic bliss. But it ends just as abruptly as it began. When I’m called away on a family emergency, I realize too late that I have no way to contact Lainey.

RJ/Rook was supposed to go fishing in Alaska with his brother. He needs these few weeks every year to get away from being a famous hockey player in Chicago.
But this year his brother needs to stay at home with his pregnant wife.
But RJ is still going. And he’s not alone for long. On the flight he meets Lainey. She’s so refreshingly adorable and so not a hockey fan. He loves that she doesn’t know him. And he also loves that she needs his help surviving in the Alaskan wilderness.
But he’s also not telling her his real name and profession …
Let the fun times begin…
WHAT WILL HAPPEN WITH LAINEY & RJ?
WILL THERE BE A HAPPILY EVER AFTER?
READ THE BOOK TO FIND OUT!
ADORABLE!
Another adorable and funny and sparky and sexy Helena Hunting romance!
I just adored RJ and Lainey!
I also loved the sexy Alaska cabin moments.
I just hated that he didn’t tell her the truth. He didn’t really lie lie, but he omitted. It’s just so unnecessary. It should’ve been written differently. There’s NO logical reason for him to lie. We immediately know Lainey is a sweet and genuine person and that she has NO idea about any kind of sport! So I really hated that he didn’t tell her. BUT – without that we wouldn’t have the unnecessary drama that follows once they meet again in Chicago a year later :/
And then the other ‘secret’ – I mean! If you don’t already know what that ‘secret’ is once you’re done reading the blurb, then I can’t help you! It’s way too obvious and Lainey always uses weird excuses to not let the reader know what that secret is until we finally find out about the ‘surprise’ around the middle of the book! Pfff.
Ugh, how I hate unnecessary drama. But romance novels seem to need those dramas. No idea why. With a bit of originality the story would be so much more beautiful.
Not that this wasn’t a sweet romance, but it’s just all so predictable! I hated that a bit. But I loved ALL the other things in this book. The people and animals and the stars from previous book.
It was a really adorable love story…. that would’ve been more amazing with a bit more originality!
BUT – I loved it. Nuff Said. Can’t wait to read the second book. I LOVE the cover guy of the second book. The guy on this one is a bit too crooked for my tastes. Like he went too many rounds in the boxing ring with his nose :/ Poor guy.
A LIE FOR A LIE was an adorable & funny & sexy wilderness/hockey/not-so-secret-secret romace! Run to your nearest amazon for your own RJ – this one is MINE!!!!
A Lie for A Lie Hit my kindle after midnight & I finished on 10/15/19 @ 2:30 am. If I could I would give this book 10 plus Stars

RJ & Lainey story will have you laughing & crying, while Violet will have you choking on your coffee. You are going to love their story and you will not be able to put this book down, so be prepared for a late night.
“I’m not a regular guy. Being a professional hockey player in Chicago is like being Britney Spears in Vegas.”
I’m a big fan of the author’s romantic comedies. While there are many funny moments in A Lie for a Lie, that’s not what is most memorable for me. It’s the feels that got me in this one. Yes, he’s a chick magnet and he’s earned his bad reputation. But, it’s gotten kind of old not knowing who is just after his money and fame. Can you blame him for enjoying the attention of a beautiful woman who doesn’t know who he is?
Just a regular guy and a regular girl with no expectations. Sounds like a great vacation, right? Freedom to explore and relax and enjoy being together. It was all of that… until it wasn’t. Talk about a rude awakening! Neither expected their time in their love nest to end quite so abruptly. It wasn’t their intention to never see or talk to each other again. But, they kinda procrastinated about sharing their personal details with each other. Yeah, they were so #LustStruck that every time they were together their clothes fell off and their brains turned to mush.
I read the synopsis, so I knew they were going to get separated and not be able to contact each other. But that didn’t keep me from being as upset as they were when it happened. They seemed so perfect for each other that I was already planning their wedding when the carriage turned back into a pumpkin and I realized my fairy godmother magic wand was only in my mind.
I didn’t take a full breath until he found her again and the big reveal happened. Could he convince her to hear him out? Would they still feel the same about each other after so long apart? Who am I kidding with that question? Once you’ve experienced their vacation in Alaska you’ll know the answer. As expected, “—it’s as if someone has flicked a lighter in an ocean of gasoline.” But, the true question is if she’ll allow herself to forgive him for the lie. Will she give in to her feelings that are still there, even if she chooses not to admit it?
There’s so much more that happens that I can’t tell you about. Just prepare in advance knowing you won’t be able to stop reading once you start. You have to go ‘all in’ and understand that bookmarks are for quitters and book hangovers are a part of life. I’m so thrilled this is only the first installment of a new series and can’t wait for more. The line forms here…
I just have hearts in my eyes and loved this story so hard! Rook and Lainey seemed fated for one another. These two come into each other’s life and as hard as they crash circumstances tear them apart. You just knew they needed to find each other again. But when Rook and Lainey meet again, misunderstandings might keep them apart. The chemistry between the two sizzles and I was yelling…just give Rook a chance! This was a sweet and swoony second chance romance that I never wanted to end.
OMG this new series, that visits the characters from one of my favorite Hockey series…..so so great. Can’t wait for the next one…so much fun!
Hot hockey players + Helena Hunting: How can you go wrong? Spoiler alert –you can’t. Another win from this incredibly talented author!
This author is a hit or miss for me, and A Lie for a Lie falls somewhere in the middle. It’s not a bad story at all. In fact, it’s a pretty good story except that it goes on a lot longer than I cared for given the very low angst level. There are certainly causes for angst, and Lainey does a fair bit of clinging, crying, etc, but things are resolved much faster than I would’ve expected given the length of the book. Now, there’s nothing at all wrong with a low angst story, but I don’t expect them to be quite as slow-paced or drawn out as this one. I just kept waiting for something substantial to happen to warrant the build-up, and then that something does happen but it’s like it’s all just okay. I’m trying to be vague here so as not to give spoilers, but with what happened in RJ’s past, I just expected more when Lainey reveals her secret. Under normal circumstances, I wouldn’t care for Lainey’s clinging and crying, especially the frightened rabbit she was in the beginning, but her past does explain that. In the end, the characters were likable, and the book is well-written – two things I’ve come to expect from Helena Hunting. As far as the story – I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t particularly love it either, landing me somewhere in the fair to middlin’ range. As I said, this author is a hit or miss for me, so I suppose this one really isn’t either of those – or maybe it’s a bit of both? Either way, I will check out whatever Hunting does next.
I always love Helena’s writing, and Lie for a Lie is no exception! Each scene had me rolling with laughter, or cheering for RJ and Lainey to get that very deserved Happily Ever After! I read it in two sittings and never wanted to put this baby down!
A lie for a lie was everything I could of hoped for and more! Helena creates a story that connects the characters to you on a personal level. Family, friends, love…it’s all there, written in the words on the pages.
A Lie For A Lie, a new series from Helena Hunting, is a romantic comedy about instant attraction, second chances, and not-so-little white lies. If you are looking for a hockey romance with a hot alpha athlete and quirky heroine, this is the read for you!
I got to read an early copy of this one and it was fab!! Don’t miss Helena’s latest hockey hero–he is yummy!
Now one does hockey romance like Helena – HANDS DOWN. A Lie for A Lie is a second chance rom com and I absolutely love it! You’re going to love it toooo!
I’m relatively new to Helena Hunting’s writing, this book being the third one of hers that I’ve read, and for that, believe me, I’m kicking myself. I mean, seriously, what was I thinking waiting this long to read her work? It’s ridiculous, and I’m embarrassed and ashamed of myself. But on the upside, I have a whole lot of awesomeness to look forward to in that back catalog of hers, so at least there’s that.
A Lie for a Lie kicks off with one heck of a meet-cute that turns into a bit of a mess (literally) before it circles back to cute. Rook, or RJ as he introduces himself to Lainey, solidly endeared himself to me during that whole episode. He was so gentle and kind, and I loved that he recognized right away that this woman was different and special, and from that first moment, he handled her with care, well except for that one big honking lie of omission… Lainey was so sweet and a touch naïve at first, but she was also brave, stepping way out of her comfort zone to go on this huge adventure alone.
Their magical few weeks together is abruptly cut short, and in a truly unfortunate set of circumstances, they part ways, planning to catch up with each other later. In a heartbreaking turn of events, though, that contact doesn’t go according to plan, and they lose touch. Fast forward a year, and fate steps in to reunite them in another meet-cute scenario that isn’t nearly as cute as their first meeting. RJ’s lie explodes in that moment as he sees Lainey for the first time in a year. It turns out, though, that Lainey’s got one of her own. Summoning up all the persistence, patience and purpose he can possibly muster, RJ pursues Lainey. He desperately wants a chance to prove he’s the real deal to Lainey, and she has decide if she’s willing to put her heart on the line again.
Rooted in one of my favorite tropes, A Lie for a Lie was an utterly romantic, sweet and sexy second-chance romance. Positively brimming with emotion, Hunting delivered a story that made me laugh, swoon, sigh and sob. I loved every single step of RJ and Lainey’s journey back to each other. Five smooches from me for A Lie for a Lie by Helena Hunting!
~Danielle Palumbo, Red Cheeks Reads
Hahahahaha yes! I am still smiling after finishing A Lie for a Lie. Helena Hunting has struck rom-com gold once again with Lainey and RJ’s story.
A chance meeting between two very different people soon became the best few weeks of both of their lives. I loved the easy banter. How they could just be themselves without the pressure they normally found themselves under pressing down on them. They thought it would be a fling. Neither Lainey or RJ planned on catching feelings but they did. But time was always against them. And when theirs ran out, the happy bubble they had been living in burst.
Flash forward a year…call it destiny, kismet, fate, whatever you will but they found themselves in the same place at the same time again. It was a flood of emotions on both sides. And fear. Their secrets were soon to be revealed and nothing would be the same….
I loved seeing RJ and Lainey fall in love all over again with the people they were outside of their Alaskan bubble. It didn’t hurt that RJ had a lot of help. Cue the Pucked Series crew! I really enjoyed seeing them all again. Especially when they all rallied around RJ to help him win his woman back.
RJ and Lainey’s second-chance romance was as sweet as it was sexy. Full of family and humor, friendship and hockey, A Lie for a Lie kept me entertained from start to finish. AND that ending!! SWOON city. RJ’s final play to prove his devotion to Lainey made my heart skip a beat. I can’t wait to see where Helena Hunting takes this series next.
Rook (RJ) Bowman uses the quiet of his family’s cabin in Alaska to recharge and reconnect once a year with his family. But this year it will be even quieter as the rest of the family isn’t able to join him for the first time ever. As luck would have it though, RJ doesn’t end up spending his cabin time alone. Lainey’s literal fall into his lap piqued his interested when she didn’t recognize him as a professional hockey player and instead treated him like a regular guy. Lainey is heading to Alaska for a few weeks of research on her latest Master’s thesis. Their month together turns far more domestic than either were angling for, but a medical emergency back home has their time cut short as RJ has to race home to be with his family. Through a series of unfortunate events, a year passes and both think the other has gone on and forgotten about their time together. In fact, Lainey doesn’t even know RJ’s real name or his profession.
When they run into each other a year later, there are plenty of sparks flying, but Lainey is even more guarded than she was when they first met, and RJ needs to atone for his omissions in Alaska and prove that he means what he says.
I enjoyed both of these characters. RJ needs a little normal in his life with all the crazy that surrounds his career, and though I wanted him to tell Lainey the truth, I couldn’t really fault him for the omission as he showed her a side of himself he didn’t normally show the public. Lainey’s sheltered life left her a little on the quirky side, but I loved the vulnerability she shared with RJ and how he was able to keep her grounded when she needed it most. Together, these two just fit; they balanced each other nicely.
This was a fun, second chance romance with a little extra thrown in. Both are hiding secrets at various points in the story and the consequences of those lies (or omissions) are the biggest hurdles they have to overcome. Each little twist in their story kept the story flowing and the pages turning, and jumping into this new series was thoroughly entertaining.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
This amazing book is about Rook and Lainey. They meet when she literally falls into his lap on a plane, then again when she has a little panic attack about flying when they are both on their way to Kodiak Alaska. They create a friendship that becomes more and spend weeks falling in love. When their time starts to wind down, they spend everyday learning about each other and loving each other but a lie is told and it effects their future. I was so exited we got more of the Pucked gang and their kids. I also loved the two parts to the book where part one is Rook and Lainey falling in love in Alaska but the second part is them trying to fit back in each other’s lives and rekindle their relationship.
