This ebook contains a bonus prologue! The perfect match may be closer than they imagine . . . Despite her disastrous London debut, Millicent Edgebrook has proven skilled at securing matches—for every young lady but herself. Resigned to spinsterhood, and eager to gain independence from her lovable but eccentric uncle, Millie joins the Everton Domestic Society. Her first assignment: find a … Society. Her first assignment: find a bride for Preston Knowles, Duke of Middleton. How difficult can it be to secure a match for a handsome, eligible aristocrat? As difficult, it seems, as resisting her own attraction to the duke…
Preston has promised himself not to be ruined by love. After being rebuffed by two perfectly respectable candidates, he’d rather remain happily single for the rest of his life…if only his mother would let him. Yet suddenly, he’s fantasizing about the lovely matchmaker she’s hired—the least suitable bride imaginable. Millie’s past is shrouded in scandal, and the Everton Society forbids relations between employees and clients. But even with so many obstacles against them, Preston longs to convince the woman he adores that love trumps rules every time…

Millicent has the uncanny ability to find suitable husbands for her friends but can’t seem to secure one herself. After a horrendous debut and no eligible suitors, she’s okay with spinsterhood. She applies and is accepted as an Everton Lady. Her first assignment is finding a bride for the Duke of Middleton. Little does Millie realize, she’s the one the Duke wants as his bride.
Preston is tired of searching and wooing an eligible match, only to have his proposals rejected. When he discovers his mother has hired a matchmaker, he’s furious. But the more time he spends with Millie, the harder Preston falls in love with said matchmaker. She’s intelligent, beautiful and makes his blood heat with desire. When he hints it’s her he wants, Millie thrusts him into the arms of another. Will Preston make Millie see how well-matched they are for each other or will his heart be broken yet again?
I’ve loved Preston ever since Foolish Bride and I’m so glad he finally got a woman worthy of him. He’s got the patience of Job, I swear. Millie’s attempt to thwart his affection only makes him yearn for her. Millie’s intelligence and love of chess made me cheer. They both have gone through heartbreak and loss but are stronger for it.
In classic Fenichel’s style, the characters are well-conceived with plenty of misconceptions to overcome. The dance Preston and Millie play kept me engaged. The plot moves along nicely, and I inhaled the story in two days. I can’t wait for the next in the series.
Disclaimer: I received an ARC via Netgalley from Kensington Publishing/Lyrical Press in the hopes I’d review it.
Favorite Character/Quote: Preston. I’ve always liked him as a hero and in this story, we delve into the man behind the title. He’s quite modern in his ideas which I found refreshing.
My Rating: 5+ stars
This was a wonderfully well-written, well-planned and well-executed book. While this is book two in the series, I have not read the first book and it did not detract from my enjoyment of this story. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the characters – especially Millicent and Preston. You can really identify with where each of them is coming from and you can see why each loves the other.
Millicent Edgebrook was ruined during her first season and while nobody knew, she still removed herself from the marriage mart because she knew no husband would want to marry a bride who was not pure. She has other plans for her life besides marriage. First, she is going to become an Everton Lady and then she is going to travel, do good works and help people. She has a very poor opinion of all of the men of the ton because of her experience when she was just sixteen. Millie was raised by her sweet, loving, lovable and very eccentric uncle who is ridiculed by the ton.
Preston Knowles, Duke of Middleton is a nice, sweet, loving, respectful man who is trying very hard to find a wife. He doesn’t necessarily expect love in his marriage, but he would at least like to like and respect his wife. However, he has proposed twice – and been refused twice. He can’t do that again. So, his mother hires the Everton Domestic Society to help him find the perfect duchess – one that will accept his proposal.
Millicent was so very nervous when she went to the Everton Domestic Society for her interview, but could only be honest in her answers to the questions. It turned out that she had a skill! She is a natural matchmaker and has found matches for all of her friends. So, her first assignment as an Everton Lady is to help the Duke of Middleton find a bride and she is determined to be successful in her assignment.
Reluctantly, Preston agrees to his mother’s request to allow Everton’s to assist in his quest for a bride – after all – he certainly hasn’t done too well by himself. It isn’t too long after their first meeting that Preston realizes his attraction to Millicent and that attraction just continues to grow. He recognizes it for what it is – love – but he has to be careful because she is adamant that she won’t marry and that she has other plans for her life. Those plans don’t include marriage. He knows he has to take it slow, but it is so hard because the attraction is so strong – and he thinks she is attracted to him as well.
Preston follows Millicent’s plans just as she has them laid out – but – at the same time, he steals time alone with her and dances with her – whatever he can do to have alone time with her and to encourage her to feel as much as he does. I loved watching the two come to their HEA and Preston was absolutely precious.
I thoroughly enjoyed the read and I hope you will as well.

“I requested and received this e-book at no cost to me and volunteered to read it; my review is my honest opinion and given without any influence by the author or publisher.”
Despite her disastrous London debut, Millicent Edgebrook has proven skilled at securing matches—for every young lady but herself. Resigned to spinsterhood, and eager to gain independence from her lovable but eccentric uncle Francis, Millie joins the Everton Domestic Society. I was thrilled to read Preston’s story as I’d been waiting & hoping for it ever since I read ‘Foolish Bride’ & he’s still as gorgeous as he was before, he’s so loyal & honourable. Millie is a strong woman who longs to travel & not be come the property of a man. A well written engrossing read. The characters are well formed & the pace of the story was very good. Whilst Preston & Millie were instantly attracted to each other she resisted her feelings far more than he did. They also really liked each other & became firm friends & gradually revealed their secrets to each other. Their budding romance was a joy to read, throw in cameo roles from previous characters, a dog & a kitten & I was happy. I look forward to more in the series.
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
A Lady’s Escape by A.S. Fenichel is book Two in the Everton Domestic Society Series. This is the story of Millicent ‘Millie’ Edgebrook and Preston Knowles, Duke of Middleton. I have read the previous book, but feel this can be a standalone book if you wish to do so.
Millie didn’t succeed at her coming out and actually had a disastrous time. Now working towards being independent has joined the Everton Domestic Society. Millie’s first assignment is to find a wife for Preston which being a Duke should make things pretty easily. Preston is being pressed to marry but he isn’t ready to do so. Although he is finding Millie to be someone he could be interested in, but with her scandalous past… not someone that should be for him.
Really enjoyed reading their story.
A Lady’s Escape (Everton Domestic Society, #2) by A.S. Fenichel This is the second book in this series and I enjoyed just as much or more than the first (A Lady’s Honor (Everton Domestic Society) thanks so much to the author, publisher and #NetGalley for letting me read and review this book. Preston Knowles (Duke of Middleton..turned down by two ladies) Millicent Edgebrook ( she had a disastrous debut she becomes a Everton Lady) She is hired by Preston’s mother to find him a wife…hard hard can that be? This is where the fun begins… there is laughter, tears, tragedy, old friends and enemies, steamy sex all getting us to a HEA… I can’t wait for the next in this series …maybe Jacques story?
“A Lady’s Escape” by A.S. Fenichel
Another great story. I was lucky enough to be gifted a free ARC from the author via NetGalley. I do enjoy this author’s story telling. I chuckle and get a little teary-eyed but mostly I am just captivated by the characters and their foibles, stumbles, and recoveries. And I am looking forward to my next adventure with this author.. and the Everton Domestic Society? or ? maybe the story of one of the supporting characters in this story.
This was a fun, well-written book. Resigned to spinsterhood, Millicent joins the Everton Domestic Society and is assigned to find a match for Preston, a duke. Preston has been rejected by two fiancees and is not in a hurry to be matched with another. They try to resist the attraction they feel to each other. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more books by this author.
A Lady’s Escape by A.S. Fenichel
4.5 Stars A Great Historical Romance Read!
I loved this book and the series so far! The fast pace storyline is entertaining, exciting, and well written with witty characters, great world building, and creative plots, that kept me riveted until the end! There is also emotional angst and a beautiful romance that is sweet and passionate rating 3-4 flames. I recommend this author to anyone who loves to read a great story!
WOW… What a terrific read!! A Lady’s Escape by A.S Fenichel is book 2 Everton Domestic Society series. I am fairly new to A.S. Fenichel’s books but I am becoming a fast fan! Though in a series this book can be read as a standalone. This is a charming and wonderful read and her lovable characters are a true delight. Her description paint such a clear picture of what is happening that it gives you that true regency feel. This story has matchmaking, death, understanding, trust, being lower in station, chess, persuasion, a loving mother & uncle, an explosion, injury and love at first sight. Can a Duke really fall in love with a working class lady? You will just have to read this story to find out. I highly recommend this book!
***This book was gifted to me and I am voluntarily reviewing.
Millicent’s job as an employee of the Everton Domestic Society is to find a wife for Preston, the Duke of Middleton. Preston keeps trying to be receptive to the young ladies Millicent introduces him to, but he can’t seem to keep his mind on anyone but Millicent. A romantic story of a Duke who takes a chance on love and what he will do to get the woman he loves to say yes. This a new author for my TBR and I absolutely, positively enjoyed reading this book. On my list is to read the other books in this series.
Millie and Preston are wonderful characters that at the beginning seem to be at odds. Millie decides that even though she didn’t have a great comfort and that she wanted more in life decides to get a position, which in this time period is rare.
Working for a agency that sends ladies of good families to help others helps Millie to set her goals to be able to travel and help others.
Her first job, to find a suitable wife for the Duke of Middleton. Already having had 2 ladies refuse him, Preston is not up to start over so his mother hires Millie to fine Preston a wife.
Falling in love at first sight? For Preston, it seems he did even though he doesn’t realize it it friends do. Millie fights her attraction by setting up several ladies with Preston .
This is the first book that I have read from A. S. Fenichel, she’s a wonderful author and her characters are so entertaining you just want to know more about them. Looking forward to reading more of her books.
Enjoyable. Went on a little long. Both too timid to say what they want or mean, so not too much to grab onto for quite some time.
Entertaining and a good Victorian romance
Loved it. This author always has you hooked by the tenth page
I adored Millicent Edgebrook and found the Duke of Middleton perfectly charming. A Lady’s Escape is an entertaining, well-written, sensual romance that you must read!
Though not the first book in this series, this lovely story stands alone. But like me, you will definitely want to go back and read what was missed previously. I found this to be a very sweet romance. However, do not confuse sweet with boring. The romance between Millicent and Preston began as a business arrangement, moved to friendship, erupted in passion and blossomed into love.
Millicent (not “Millie” to Preston) was an Everton Lady, hired by Preston’s mother to help him find a bride after two rejections. Millicent was great in setting up her potential suitors for matches…for her friends, not herself. She vows to stay single. Preston is adverse to being set up, but Millicent is determined to be successful in her task. She is successful; she just didn’t realize that Preston decided that she was meant to be his. This story is filled with yearning, excitement and friendship turning into love. There is no way you can read this book and NOT feel satisfied and happy.
I received an ARC of this book courtesy of NetGalley. I received no compensation for my review. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
I have read a number of books in this series and A Lady’s Escape did not disappoint me. When Millicent is introduced to the Duke of Middleton, she discovers that her vow to remain unmarried becomes more and more difficult to uphold. Preston, on the other hand, is intrigued by the woman who has been tasked with finding him a wife, and before long he finds that the ladies she introduces him to are not nearly as interesting as Millie herself. The romance in the story builds slowly but is undeniable. As Millie tries ever so hard to stick to the Everton Ladies Handbook, her resolve crumbles with every touch and glance from Preston. The reader is carried along in this well-written Regency romance and although there is some adventure, the story is of the development of the relationship between the Everton Lady, Millicent Edgebrook and His Grace the Duke of Middleton. This novel is part of a series and characters from previous books in the series appear in this one too, however it is nevertheless a standalone and comes to a happy conclusion. I received a copy of this book through NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.
A Duke who needs a wife who will be a proper Duchess, an un-Duchess like lady hired to help him find that wife, and an Uncle who keeps blowing up his lab – I really enjoyed this story. I received an arc of this book.
Millicent Edgebrook has a knack for matchmaking and, through the Everton Domestic Society, is hired by the Dowager Duchess of Middleton to find a wife for her son. Preston Knowles, Duke of Middleton, is a dutiful son who is willing to go along with his mother’s request.
As they attend society events in the search for Preston’s best match, he realizes his perfect match is the matchmaker. Millicent is also attracted to Preston but does not feel she would be the proper wife for a duke. Preston is not willing to give up and is determined that Millicent will be his wife.
This the first book I have read by A S Fenichel, and I definitely want to read more of her work. It is a wonderful page turner with many well-developed characters, including Millicent’s Uncle Francis and her chaperone, Doris, along with Preston’s best friend, Jacques. It was a joy to read, and I highly recommend it to all who appreciate well-written historical romance.
I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
A wonderfully written book that will provide the reader with hours of reading pleasure and a great insight into the mores and taboos of society in this regency era. It’s a wonder that romance could flourish at all in a time when to even address a member of the opposite sex by his or her first name could cause scandal, but flourish it did as witnessed by our heroine and hero Millicent and Preston. Their love grows and their HEA is very satisfying to see. Highly recommended to all lovers of Regency Romance.
