“My name is Meredith Gentry, but of course it’s not my real name. I dare not even whisper my true name after dark for fear that one hushed word will travel over the night winds to the soft ear of my aunt, the Queen of the Air and Darkness. She wants me dead. I don’t even know why.”
Meredith Gentry, Princess of the high court of Faerie, is posing as a human in Los Angeles, living as a P.I. … living as a P.I. specializing in supernatural crime. But now the Queen’s assassin has been dispatched to fetch her back — whether she likes it or not. Suddenly Meredith finds herself a pawn in her dreaded aunt’s plans. The job that awaits her: enjoy the constant company of the most beautiful immortal men in the world. The reward: the crown — and the opportunity to continue to live. The penalty for failure: death.

Laurell K. Hamilton is my go to when it comes to strong female leads, who are just as real as the rest of us, and struggle with their decisions and the impact they have. I have many copies of this book, pretty much every cover edition possible, and I re-read it every few months. The Merry Gentry series is one of my all-time favorite Fae series …
Ms. Hamilton begins a new series where the fae are real and live near St. Louis at the Cahokia Mounds. Overall a great introduction to the series, with great character building and a neat new world.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and have bought the next book. I am a fan of this author as she creates a world where the fey and other worldly characters are accepted as part of every day life.
I love her books and this series doesn’t disappoint! A must have series.
Great book, couldn’t put it down!!
Not for those of what to avoid graphic sexual situations. Merry Gentry is a princess in both the dark and light fae, and both sides are out to kill her. What’s a girl to do, but find those few fae, or other groups who will help to protect her. But for some of those, sex is the payment they want for their help.
Laurels K. Hamilton is one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE authors! I started with the Gentry series and then read all through the Anita Blake series….and loved them all.
Excellent start to a series which unfortunately gradually got less good
I loved her Series of books about US Marshal Anita Blake. When I learned of the Merry Gentry series, I had to check it out. The premise is certainly catchy. A mortal Fairy who fled the royal court and her heritage to live among humans. This all changes when she is named heir to the Throne by her Aunt the Queen, if she meets certain conditions and …
This series doesn’t pretend to be anything other than what it is- a supernatural RH action-packed thrill ride. If you don’t like magic and sex and violence- READ SOMETHING ELSE. The first book sets up the world and basic premise and introduces several of the main characters. Hamilton delivers on the promise of supernatural RH in a way filled with …
I absolutely love Laurell K. Hamilton and can’t wait for her next books to come out. However, you need to be open to a very steamy read.
I love her books. Laurell K Hamilton always keeps me on the edge of my seat when I read one of her books. I own this series and the Anita Blake series. Do yourself a favor and read both series. I recommend starting with book one for each series as they build on each other.
Any book you read by this author is going to be well done and this one doesn’t disappoint. Loved the book, characters and the surprises that came with it. I have read this series many times and I am a huge fan. Well worth your time.
OMG Dark fairy tail at its best
I like most of this series, but often find I crave more story and less of the sexual exploits. Seems that too often it’s just sex and not furturing the story ….
Laurell Hamilton creates another complex world where magical things happen and sex is explosive and can be dangerous to the furniture and the weather. Great plots, always unpredictable, except for having lots of steamy (sometimes literally) sex with the princess of faerie, due to the need to repopulate the faerie kingdoms.
My only complain is that the main character in the book is always asking questions. She just cannot just enjoy the moment. Question later, not before .
It is rare to find strong male and female characters that show a healthy non-sexual relationship (Anita & Edward)… she writes her characters as plausible people
It’s Merry and her men. What more do you need to know?
Ms. Hamilton never fails to amaze me with the novels she pens. I read both her series. Always excited for the next book.
