***** Second Chances
I can usually count on a couple of things before I begin a Tamara Ferguson book. First off, the story will pull me in quickly because of the plot and appealing characters, then keep me hooked until the last page. Secondly, there will most probably be a veteran involved. I was pleased to find this book followed both of those trends.
As a character background explanation, there’s Ben Michaelson, a formerly spoiled, disobedient rock star, now trying for a comeback at a local Christmas concert event in a small town. After going off to the war in Iraq, sadly, he has returned as a wounded warrior––both physically and emotionally. He knows he’s still coping with PTSD and has no time nor interest in getting involved with anyone, romance-wise.
Then there’s the ten-years-younger-than-him, Rose Atkinson, on her way to meet up with her adoptive musician parents in that same small town, where her adoptive mother will be performing. As a young child, on top of losing her real parents and several years of blindness, Rose, too, has endured difficult times. Still, she went everywhere with her “second family” as her new mom sang in concerts. Then, coincidentally, when Rose was a teenager, she had a giant crush on Ben who was the opening act for her mother, although of course back then, he wasn’t interested in her at all. So now, after several years and numerous boyfriends, she swears she will never get involved with any musician. No way.
But fate can be a funny thing, as we see by moving forward in time to the book’s opening scene.
It’s the weekend of this large music Christmas festival and there comes a powerful blizzard. Ben is stuck in his car, unprepared for the weather, and Rose just happens by with her dog Sammie. Basically, she rescues Ben. Smart, capable, she thinks of all the right things to do, including driving him to a cabin he’d rented for the concert time, stripping him down, and turning on the hot water shower for him to fight off frost bite.
Having pre-rented this cabin and had his instruments shipped in, after Ben takes a shower, he comes out to discover Rose, playing his electric piano beautifully. He was already hooked when he first saw the grown up version of Rose, but this clinches the deal. And Rose? After swearing off dating anyone seriously, she is amazed at her deep attraction to Ben.
But is there a truth to Love At First Re-Sight? Or, is it for both Ben and Rose to test the waters first? (And let us readers enjoy!)
I really loved the character premise of Ben being such a self-centered jerk when he was young, then how, although he came back as an amputee, war and life had indeed changed him–for the better. Highly recommended!!
A Touching Holiday Romance
“A Kiss Beneath a Christmas Star” is a heartwarming, sweet romance written by Tamara Ferguson. Set in Dragonfly Pointe, it begins with the courageous rescue of a stranded motorist by Rose and her faithful dog, Sammie. Rose takes the driver, a wounded veteran, to his rented cabin on a freezing stormy winter day. Even though she hasn’t seen him for six years, Rose immediately recognizes the driver, Ben Michealson. As a teen, Rose traveled with her parents while her mother, a superstar singer, toured the country. She developed a crush on Ben, a singer on the verge of stardom who dropped out of the music industry without explanation. With all the instruments in the cabin and Dragonfly Pointe’s yearly charity event in a few days, she figures he’s making a comeback. The blizzard conditions outside makes it impossible for Rose and Sammie to leave.
Once Ben has finally warmed up, he sees Rose at the piano playing a familiar tune, and recognizes her. Ben sits on the bench next to Rose and begins singing, “When You Love a Woman.” Rose joins in and they sing together in perfect harmony, and then he pauses and gazes into her eyes and softly sings the verse, “You see your world in her eyes.” That was such a touching scene, I ended up singing along.
Rose’s relationships with men in the music industry have gone badly, and she’s reluctant to get involved with any musician. Still, they share an intense attraction to each other. When the snow stops and paths are cleared, Rose is torn between staying and leaving.
Tamara Ferguson does a fantastic job at creating realistic characters that seem like people you know. Rose and Ben are both extraordinarily likable characters. The dialogue is engaging, the pacing is perfect, and the tone warm. I highly recommend this endearing love story!
This book’s storyline was okay. Rose’s character was okay. Ben’s character was okay. The ending was okay.
Rose
Has grown up into a beautiful independent woman who stills has her service dog even after her surgery. She needs her glasses but does well. She sings beautifully and can play the piano. Ben was a rock star for a while then disappeared, now he is in Dragonfly Pointe to sing at the Christmas Charity Ball. But he runs off the road and she rescued him. They are cute together.
Delightful tale of overcoming disabilities and finding love. Rose and Ben make a wonderful couple. Sammie is a wonderful part of the story as well.
