Eighteen-year-old James Douglas can only watch, helpless, as the Scottish freedom fighter, William Wallace, is hanged, drawn, and quartered. Even under the heel of a brutal English conqueror, James’s blood-drenched homeland may still have one hope for freedom, the rightful king of the Scots, Robert the Bruce. James swears fealty to the man he believes can lead the fight against English tyranny.… tyranny.
The Bruce is soon a fugitive, king in name and nothing more. Scotland is occupied, the Scottish resistance crushed. The woman James loves is captured and imprisoned. Yet James believes their cause is not lost. With driving determination, he blazes a path in blood and violence, in cunning and ruthlessness as he wages a guerrilla war to restore Scotland’s freedom. James knows that he risks sharing Wallace’s fate, but what he truly fears is that he has become as merciless as the conqueror he fights.

I am not an expert on Scotland history, and didn’t know what to expect- was pleasantly surprised, couldn’t put this book down. Definately gave me a better understanding of the hard life in the 1300s.
As always, I struggle with the first 10% of most books- once I got going, I was glad I had a day of no distractions
I would highly recommend …
Captivating.
It took me a good while to read, not usually my fare, but it was enjoyable. I recommend it for anyone who likes Scottish history and/or medieval type genre/stories. It did make me curious enough to look for more information.
Makes me want to go back and learn more of the history of the period. Captures the age and the people.
Battles were historically accurate as well as the descriptions of daily life in mideval times.
Great read that also gives great insight into Scottish history, particularly surrounding the “Black Douglas”
Great book in the trilogy. Easy read, lots of action.
Great read and I’m learning quite a bit of Scottish history!
My new favorite historical fiction author definitely!
If you enjoy the history of the struggles between England and Scotland ala Braveheart, this book is for you. The story begins with the execution of William Wallace and spins a wonderfully entertaining story of the struggle of the Scots to evict the English from their land forever. Kudos to J.R. Tomlin!
Very detailed historical background
Such a good read! History of Scotland brought to life.
Book could not hold my interest, will not finish.
It was interesting to get an idea of Scottish history.
If you ever wondered what happened after Braveheart, you will love this.
This book is almost too detailed. It makes it cumbersome to read and I want to know how it ends is the only reason I keep reading it.
Good read
Historical fiction about Scotland following the death of William Wallace. If you like Bernard Cornwell you will enjoy this author.
An exceptional historical tale of a young man coming of age amongst the intrigue and dangerous liaisons of England and Scotland. Fighting for his birthright and his place among his peoples, leadership falls to a man growing in stature and conviction, even as he experiences the costs and the rewards of leading.
Great history in this book
