Eighteen-year-old James Douglas can only watch, helpless, as the Scottish freedom fighter, William Wallace, is hanged, drawn, and quartered. Even under the heel of a brutal English conqueror, James’s blood-drenched homeland may still have one hope for freedom, the rightful king of the Scots, Robert the Bruce. James swears fealty to the man he believes can lead the fight against English tyranny.… tyranny.
The Bruce is soon a fugitive, king in name and nothing more. Scotland is occupied, the Scottish resistance crushed. The woman James loves is captured and imprisoned. Yet James believes their cause is not lost. With driving determination, he blazes a path in blood and violence, in cunning and ruthlessness as he wages a guerrilla war to restore Scotland’s freedom. James knows that he risks sharing Wallace’s fate, but what he truly fears is that he has become as merciless as the conqueror he fights.

A bit more blood and avoidance of each other than necessary and not enough historical background for my taste.
A good historical fiction, compelling from the start!
This was a very good historical novel. It is about the Scots fighting the English during the time of Robert the Bruce. It brings to life the horrific things that happened during the 14th century but unfortunately very true. The characters are very real and the story is an entertaining read.
This book and the author would benefit from better – much better – editing. Misspellings and poor/”flubbed” grammatical structures abound,
The late middle ages on the Isle of Great Britain offers JR Tomlin a great historical backdrop against which, to write a good fictionalized serial drama tracing the life of a real historical person, James …
Loved it, will read the 2nd book in the series for sure.
I had to skim through the violent scenes, as they were quite detailed. But I appreciated the historical info and the characters. The ending is really a lead-in to the next book, since the outcome is not yet reached. The book has some romance, but the feelings of being in a war to save your country is the main theme. Although the book was well …
Wonderful job in using history for literary fiction!
Great read!
Nice story related to history. Principal hero has flaws and is realistic and recognizable.
I have read numerous books on Scottish history and Robert Bruce and Edward I. This book is about all the characters during this time and it is the type of book you should not read at bedtime! It is a wonderful read. It made me feel a part of that history. I was sorry when the book ended.
Stirring tale of Robert the Bruce’s rise to fame as seen through the eyes of his loyal supporter Jamie Douglas. All the more inspiring because it’s part of Scotland’s history and has the ring of realism in it. Some not too happy incidents darkened Jamie’s life, but his loyalty to the king never waivers. Excellent
Nice period piece that was close enough to history to be worth it.
STARTING WAS REALLY INTERESTING, THEN I LOST INTEREST..
Thoroughly enjoyed it
This book brings the fourteenth century Scotland to life. Historical characters abound in this enchantingly delightful story of the men and women of this time in history.
Very captivating. Good interpretation of history with some license taken but entertaining.
Great historical fiction, good pace, good mix of dialogue and description, enjoyable.
Exciting account of history. Rather gory, but probably realistic.
a rather realistic view into the past
A great read. Historical with enough fiction to fill in the unknowns. Authentic and entertaining.
