Adeline Brady traveled to 1871 Colorado from a Carson City saloon where her gambler father frequently bet her virginity on a hand of cards. He was a cheat and a liar, so she never had to pay his debt, but she needed a new life, a new start with a man who would honor and value her as his wife, not a piece of property to be gambled away. At first glance, Douglas is everything she had hoped for. Handsome. Established. Protective. But he vows to her from day one that he will never give her his heart.
When an unexpected death tears the community apart, can Douglas and Adeline conquer their fears and find happiness, or will their distrust of each other drive Adeline into the arms of another man, a rival miner who has made no secret of the fact that he will own Douglas’s mine and his wife? Little do they realize he is willing to kill to claim both for his own.

Adeline is a great woman. To be raised from ten by her gambler of a father and have turn out to be a fantastic mother is just amazing. She gets baby Emmy from Douglas. Then on the day to get home she gets all of the Smith children too. She makes the best of it all and it seems like they do great. Even with a gold hungry man and a drunkered man after them.

Adeline lives above a saloon with her father. Since she hates that life, she decides to become a mail-order bride. Therefore, she journeys to the Colorado Territory to marry her prospective groom. Unfortunately when Adeline gets there, she finds out that he has died in a suspicious gold mine accident.
Douglas, the groom’s partner, meets Adeline to explain the situation. However, he decides to ask her to marry him instead. His wife has died in that same mine accident, leaving behind a 2-month old daughter. He realizes that she would be able to help him with her.
This author creates two difficult situations that the newlyweds must deal with. The first comes from an abusive neighbor who kills his pregnant wife. They leave behind six children with no place to go. Douglas and Adeline take them in to live with them.
To make matters worse, Douglas and Adeline discover that someone is trying to kill them. They must keep their large family safe, and try to discover who is after them.
In spite of these complications, this book is still a sweet old-fashioned romance with no curse words and no sex.
It’s sad how fate takes a turn and changes everything you were expecting. That is what happens in this story. The characters both lost some one and have to figure out how it happened and what to do next. Lots of twists and turns along with hurt and loss. It is a fantastic book to read. I received this book as a gift in exchange for an honest review.
A better life, but not by any means easier. Adeline is a fighter and a great wife, friend and mother x9. Douglas has his doubts in life, not sure what really happened with his wife that died, was she faithful in their marriage? Douglas n Adeline make a good team and are a very likeable couple!
The best part of course was little Emmy, who then gets new/instant siblings.
Never A Dull Moment!
Cynthia Woolf excells at creating endearing characters involved in heart wrenching and heart warming plot twists with a rugged western backdrop and a precocious kid (or seven) thrown in for good measure. What does it all add up to? A very entertaining and emotionally satisfying story by a master storyteller!
Sweetly emotional and action packed journey filled with interesting and engaging charters, witty dialog, heart racing twists and exciting passion. Was a edge of your seat read from beginning to end and so entertaining.
Enjoy reading stories like these. Mail order brides looking for a better life or to get away for various reasons. She didn’t marry the one she was intended to, instead married a widower who lost his wife in a mine explosion and left raise the baby alone until he sees Adeline as an opportunity to rectify his problem. HEA
The third book in the Golden City Brides series a well written story that kept me turning pages. This is widower Douglas Latimer, and mail order bride Adeline Brady who was meant for his best friend Josiah. Because Josiah is died they marry instead. There is suspense, drama, danger, a villain, a murder, and love. This is the first book I have read in this series. I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I loved all the twists and turns this book had in it as there was never a dull moment and I just had to keep turning the pages to see what would get thrown at Adeline and Douglas next. The book started with Adeline escaping her father’s clutches by becoming a mail order bride, but when she arrives in Golden City she is met by the partner of her betrothed and finds out that her intended and the partner’s wife were killed in an explosion at the mine they owned. Douglas was left with an infant daughter and so he proposes marriage to Adeline with the stipulation that he will never fall in love with her and that she should not fall in love with him. Falling in love with the baby is a given. Then there is the jealous owner of a rival mine, the neglected neighbor family, the surprise reason for the explosion, a shooting and a couple of other events that make the road to a HEA a twisty one.
I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
She becomes a mail order bride to get away from her bad situation with her father. Then she gets there and finds out she is marrying her assumed grooms partner instead. He wants a bride to take care of his daughter since his business and wife were killed together. What happened there? Trouble comes even though things are not always what they seem. Excitement, twists and terms, drama, emotions and much more. I received a review copy and voluntarily review it.
This easy to read page turner had wonderful characters that you couldn’t help root for. Adeline signed up to be a mail-ordered bride and snuck away, after her father add her virginity one too many times during his poker stakes. Upon arriving to Golden City she finds out her intended died in a collapse mined along with his partner’s wife. Douglas asked Adeline to marry him instead as he had a young daughter to raise and she accepted. Through twists and turns that had them adopting their neighbor’s children, to watching their backs from someone who wants them dead, can they learn to love each other through all of these trials and tribulations. Cynthia weaves a story that keeps you turning the pages to see what happens.
Cynthia Woolf outdid herself with this one. It is a quick read but she packs a lot into not too many words. It is hard to decide if Adeline and Douglas have hearts of gold or are just a little crazy. Their marriage of convenience to provide his baby daughter with a mama quickly becomes more than they either one expects. I totally enjoyed this story.
A truly Suspenseful Romantic Thriller I just could not put down. I loved the characters and plot.
I highly recommend this book..
The author has written a heart warming story full of action and drama. This is Douglas and Adeline’s story and the character development is excellent. Both Douglas and Adeline must learn to trust each other if they are to ever reach a HEA. You will need to read this story to find out if they are ever able to find a HEA. I really enjoyed this story and highly recommend this book.
I received an ARC of this book from the author, Cynthia Woolf, via Bookfunnel and this is my voluntary and honest review. What a beautiful love story between Adeline and Douglas. Adeline is a mail order bride promised to Josiah, but she finds out that he was killed in a mining accident before she arrived. His best friend and mining partner, Douglas, lost his wife in the same mining accident. He met Adeline at the train station and proposed to her in order to help care for his infant daughter after telling her of Josiah’s death. Not long after their marriage, their neighbor killed his wife and left behind six children who Adeline and Douglas adopted. This is a heartwarming book and I loved it and highly recommend it.
Adeline’s life hasn’t been easy since her mother died. Her father is a gambler and sometimes he gambles with Adeline’s life. She decides to be a mail order bride. When she is picked, she escapes her father and goes to her new life. What she doesn’t know is, her fiancée has been killed before she gets there. Her fiancée’s partner is there waiting for her with his baby asking her to become his bride. Adeline really wants to be a mother, so instant family. Douglas just lost his wife along with his partner and needs someone to care for his daughter. Adeline will do nicely, but he won’t ever fall in love again. It is too hurtful. Douglas and Adeline end up adopting some children and begin their new life with a huge family. Something they have both wanted. Will they find love?
Wow! What an Awesome Story! A Husband for Adeline takes you back to the West with in times of the mail-order bride who has hopes for a better life but with a villain who slinks in the background on the loose who wants to give an unhappy ending to Douglas and Adeline’s story! Cynthia Woolf has outdone herself with this novel that is well-written, filled it with a magnificent cast of characters who you fall in love with, a strong plot with great dialogue, remarkable emotions, with setting descriptions and action sequences that are wonderfully vivid which brings this read together perfectly and will keep you captivated from the moment you begin the journey with Douglas and Adeline’s until the very end! As their feelings grow for one another will they be able to overcome all their trials in this heart felt story full of drama, family love, hard hitting reality, danger, heartbreak and while the suspense builds and tension escalate, and twists and turns overwhelm you that make for one Fantastic Read!
Widowed, kind hero; a generous, kind heroine; and a passel of sweet kids makes for a enjoyable and entertaining read.
This book was quick to read, fast paced, fairly short, and action packed. It had more than one murder, orphaned children, and am explosion; all in all, it worked and I really liked it.
Escaping her conniving father, Adeline manages to travel across the country to Golden City where she is to marry her proposed husband. Things do not work out the way she thought when she finds that her groom has died in an explosion, but she cannot turn down the offer made by Douglas Latimer, who lost his wife in the same explosion. With a tiny baby to take care of, Douglas has his hands full and Adeline’s instant love for the child makes him realise that marrying her will solve both their problems. Adeline certainly gets far more than she ever expected in life when she married Douglas, especially when events escalate, and together they have to make dramatic decisions about the future of their family. The story is heart-warming and suspenseful and ultimately romantic as well. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
June 1871
A heartwarming story of loss and chances taken with the hope of a family and love. I have become so enamored of these stories of the west and Cynthia Woolf has a magical way of writing them that warm my heart.
Adeline Brady had a plan and she was finally carrying it out. She was getting away from her father, a gambler before he gambled his daughter away. She had signed up to be a mail order bride and was finally on her way, sneaking out in the night so he would not realize she was gone.
When she finally got to Golden City on the stagecoach, she was met by a man she thought was to be her husband. But found out quickly he had been killed along with the man’s wife in an accident over three weeks ago.
Douglas Latimer offered her a proposition.. Marry him and help take care of his two month old daughter. Addie agreed. But he also told her he’d never love her, their marriage would be of convenience but maybe in the future, they might decide to have children, and who knows?
I loved this story of these two who had both been dealt hard hands in life but truly were perfect for each other. I could not wait to see what will happen and you will truly have a smile on your face as you turn the last page!
