At first glance, Douglas is everything she had hoped for. Handsome. Established. Protective. But he vows to her from day one that he will never give her his heart.
When an unexpected death tears the community apart, can Douglas and Adeline conquer their fears and find happiness, or will their distrust of each other drive Adeline into the arms of another man, a rival miner who has made no secret of the fact that he will own Douglas’s mine and his wife? Little do they realize he is willing to kill to claim both for his own.

I absolutely love this golden city brides series. This is the second book I’ve read in the series and I was not disappointed. Addie is a courageous young woman who lived a happy life until her mother died. Her father became a gambler and used her virginity in card games. Lucky for her, he was a cheat and she never had to pay the debt. She decided to become a mail order bride in Central City Colorado, but when she arrives, she discovers her betrothed was killed in a mine explosion along with his partners wife.
Douglas lost his wife and his partner in the mine explosion. He knew his wife was unfaithful and they had argued the night she died. He knew he could never give his heart to another woman. He went to town to meet Addie and tell her the news of her betroths death. She needed a husband and protector and he needed someone to help care for his baby daughter so they agreed on a marriage of convenience. The story is full of revelations, danger, determination and hope and ending with a HEA. Just the way I like it.
