Nothing will keep Louisa from her great-aunt’s fortune. Except perhaps a phantom who turns out to be a most eligible bachelor.
Although Louisa Banner insists she is not the least bit superstitious, she cannot help her misgivings when her family announces she must spend October with her great aunt in a rundown Welsh castle riddled with tales of ghosts. The family hopes Louisa will endear … ghosts. The family hopes Louisa will endear herself to her aunt enough to win a grand inheritance. Louisa’s only wish is to avoid a run-in with any of the phantoms spoken of by the local villagers. When Louisa stumbles upon a forgotten graveyard, and a man whose name comes directly from a tombstone, she isn’t certain whether to run away in terror or stay and get to know the handsome spirit.
Erasmus Grey is cursed, and not only because he sometimes hears the voices of his dead grandparents. While most men would count it a blessing to be a wealthy, eligible bachelor, Ras is absolutely panic-stricken at the idea of finding a bride. Rather than succumb to the matchmaking mothers of London, he retreats to an old family cottage with no plans to return to Society. Though he manages to keep his presence in the country a secret, coming upon a lovely young woman during one of his rambles nearly undoes all his careful work. But when he realizes Miss Banner thinks him a ghost, Ras wonders if he might have found a way to cure his own fears.

I really enjoyed this book! The plot was engaging and very unique with well written and endearing characters. I would definitely recommend it!
Once I started I didn’t want to stop reading. It held my attemtion so well. I really liked the personalites of the H & h. They were each likeable and I was hoping for their h.e.a. The author has the best meet cutes. I thought the way the ghosts were introduced was great and made me smile. The ghosts were fabulous. Sally Britton added little details to the story to make it feal realistic and give it a natural flow. The aunt had some great food for thought & wisdom in the story. Well put & I highleted a few passages. I thought the H & h had some natural growth and they complimented each other well. They each found their spots in the worl and comfortable with themselves.
This is a very sweet Regency romance. Even the ghosts are kindly relatives.
Louisa is cast upon a great-aunt after the death of her father, and she finds herself going from riches to, well, not quite rags. But life is definitely different in tranquil Northumberland, compared to her lively Scarborough home.
The plot moves along at a steady, sedate pace. And the characters are brought to life with wonderful writing.
One of the ghosts wears a kilt, and brings a lovely Scottish flair to this story which is set close to the border. Not scary at all.
Erasmus, the haunted great-grandson, has a stammer which he has been ridiculed for all his life. He has tried his best to overcome it, but there’s still traces which has left him reluctant to socialise enough to pursue a wife.
A thoroughly enjoyable Regency tale with a treasure hunt!
* I received an ARC of this book but am voluntarily leaving a fair, honest review.
There is no sex, violence or swearing – a gently bred young lady
I absolutely LOVED this book. I stayed up late to finish it and was so sad to have it end. I absolutely enjoyed the friendly ghosts in the story. It reminded me of the movie The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. Both main characters were fun to read about and I loved how Sally addresses the challenges people face when they have a stutter. I have a few friends who suffer from it and she was spot on with how it affects their lives. This whole story was fun to read and left me feeling happy.
I loved this book! Sally Britton is one of my absolute favorite authors and she has not disappointed! This is a clean, sweet story about Lord Erasmus Gray, known as Ras, and Louisa Banner. Ras is a kind man with a stutter. His mother is trying to find him a suitable wife, but all he wants to do is write his new novel in peace and quiet. He goes to his home in Harbottle to write and get away from London for a while. Louisa has been sent to Harbottle to live with an aunt she has never met. Her mother says she has run out of funds for Louisa and is going to live with a friend. The friend has never liked Louisa, so she is not invited to stay. Ras and Louisa meet in an unusual place and Ras is visited by the ghosts of his grandparents to help him find a treasure. Louisa and Ras become friends and try to solve the mystery together. Ras has never met a woman who doesn’t care if he stutters and Louisa has never had a true friend. Sally handled Ras’s speech impediment well in this story. I enjoyed Ras and felt for him when he was flustered and had difficulty speaking. This sweet story is not scary and the ghosts in it are funny and very likable. I highly recommend this story, which is perfect for a fall read.
**I was lucky enough to receive a free ARC of this book and freely give my review.
I really enjoyed this book! Perfect book for October, really any time of year. The ghosts are of the friendly variety. I love the idea of our ancestors looking out for us, I have a feeling they really do. I loved Ras and Louisa. They are just so good, good people. Aunt Penrith is the best! I loved that the main characters were willing to break from society’s expectations and find true happiness in their lives. I love a clean, romantic Regency era book.
I received an advance copy for my opinion. I feel so grateful that I did! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
This was a delightful story… and I don’t use “delightful” very often, but it truly is a light story that brought me joy! The two main characters were written well, so it makes sense that they fit well together. I will admit, though, that my favorite characters were the hero’s “helpers!” If I would change anything about this book, I would write more scenes for them 🙂
Such a sweet and unique regency romance!
The book started a little slow for me but picked up quickly and my interest was piqued! I loved everything about the main characters, Ras and Louisa, and their beautiful friendship that formed and slowly grew into something a little bit more. So many fun side characters including Louisa’s aunt and Ras’s friendly ancestors. This is most definitely NOT a scary story in any way.
This book has a beautiful, remote setting combined with some friendly ghosts, a hunt for a missing treasure, and a sweet romance between two genuinely good people – the perfect combination for a great read!
The author has long been a favorite of mine and this book was no exception. I would have liked to see things play out a little bit more in the end but enjoyed the epilogue immensely.
I received a complimentary copy of this book but my opinions are my own.
This is a lovely read — engaging characters with authentic issues, a sweet plot with gothic effects perfect for Autumn reading, and several passages that I went back and read over again because the prose or sentiment was beautiful.
The author handles a speech impediment issue with sensitivity and compassion. The romance arc between Louisa and Ras is sweet and authentic. After a developing the plot so well, though, the ending feels a bit abrupt. I’d like to read more about Louisa charming the Grey family, making a stand with her mother, and a bit more of the couple’s progression from courtship to marriage.
This is not a creepy ghost story, but the gothic elements– [friendly] ghosts, hidden clues, and treasure hunt– add fun twists to the story. And the ghosts are great characters in and of themselves.
I haven’t read many books lately that make me want to go back and read again a second time, but this book hit the spot.
I received a complimentary copy, but this review and all opinions are my own.
Sally Britton has done it again. She’s written a book that not only pulls you into the time period, but right into her characters’ lives. A Haunting at Havenwood is a well-written romance with some unusual characters in addition to the two main characters, and I loved them all! It’s refreshing to see a hero that has a problem speaking to beautiful and eligible young women. Both Erasmus-“Call me Ras”-and Louisa pretend to believe something that neither really does, but it allows for some private meetings. The plot has some unusual twists and turns, and the outcome is perfection. I highly recommend this book to readers of clean, wholesome romance, to Christian fiction readers, to paranormal romance readers (the ghosts are friendly, never threatening), and to Regency romance readers. I plan to read more from this talented author.
I received a complimentary copy. I chose to write a review and share my opinion of this excellent story.
What a wonderful intriguing book. There’s nothing scary about this book. It is a fun sweet romance, that involves some do-good, ancestral ghosts. The characters of Ras and Louisa are perfectly matched. The author, Sally Britton did an amazing job researching for this book. From searching old maps, (to find this unique area), to the historical events, and activities of that time. Then she created this “Can’t put it down” story to weave into the setting. If I likened it to a movie, it would be The Bishop’s Wife or The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. A Lighthearted historical romantic dramedy. It is part of a series of other great books, but can be read as a stand-alone story.
Highly recommended. I almost didn’t read the book when I found out there were ghosts involved because I don’t read paranormal novels. I’m glad I read it because it’s a fun read and the ghosts add a whimsical touch. The characters grow and learn to accept themselves along with healing from past hurts. As this healing occurs, they learn to accept themselves and they grow in their friendship and later romantic relationship. Of course it’s a happy ending and it’s a fun read along the way.
Kind of gothic, but not?
There are definitely elements of gothic in this book. Ghosts, you know. But it’s a nicely layered read with interesting characters. I especially enjoyed Erasmus “Ras.” He’s different and I liked that a lot.
Recommend.
I don’t usually read paranormal stories.
I’d downloaded this one before realizing it was about actual ghosts.
The main characters have less than happy lives outside of the bubble they find themselves in when no one is aware of their meeting and growing friendship.
When their bubble of anonymity bursts they learn exactly how special their friendship is… and allow it to grow into something more.
This was a incredible read with fantastic characters I took to right away. The author takes you on a journey of mystery, intrigue and love. I was so wrapped in between the pages I felt I was literally part of the story. I think this is some of Sally Britton’s best work! I loved everything about this book, the sweet clean romance that shows compassion, friendship and laughter. This is a story that won’t let go of your heart!
Was given a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
I really enjoyed this book. It has lovable characters and a fun story plot. I liked how the ghosts were portrayed and how the main couple’s romantic relationship developed in the book. This fun, light, and creative book is definitely worth your time.
