By Any Means. When fifteen-year-old Marisol Hernandez is gunned down on the Track, Oakland’s infamous prostitution corridor, it isn’t exactly front page news. Her death is chalked up as just another teenage hooker consumed by the streets. But to the grieving grandmother who raised her, Marisol’s homicide isn’t merely a statistic. To make matters worse, at the same time she’s burying one … burying one granddaughter she’s desperately trying to keep Marisol’s fourteen-year-old sister, Belicia, from succumbing to a similar fate.
As a favor to a friend, former-soldier, ex-cop, and part-time private investigator Chauncey ‘Chance’ Means agrees to look into the killing. It’s a murder the local police admit they have little likelihood of solving. Complicating things, is the fact that Chance left law enforcement with more than a few enemies and a well-earned reputation as a man who doesn’t let rules get in the way.
Following a trail of apathetic cops, street-hardened prostitutes, pimps, and gangsters, Chance scours the San Francisco Bay in search of a merciless child-killer. He soon discovers there are people who don’t want him looking into Marisol’s murder. Men who will do whatever it takes to stop him.
Praise for A HARD PLACE:

If you like books that involve thrills, mystery, action and bloody beat-down then this is the book for you. I’m now looking forward to reading the rest of the series!
I new writer to me but I must read
If you enjoy reading stories involving corrupt police, this book should be on your list. Good plot development, great twists and turns, realistic in its depiction of the underbelly of society. Characters were the sort one loves to hate. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading fast-paced, action thriller books.
Somewhat predictable but belivable.
Difficult to find believable
kept me reading & reading…couldn’t put it down.
Wonderful good versus bad storyline. This book will open your eyes to the terrible circumstances faced by so many. The good guy hero works hard to save the heroine. Any more telling will spoil the story. Good read!
Even though this book was extremely violent, I thought it was very goo. It kept me interested right up to the last page.
It was a little too much on wanton killing.
I enjoyed the teaciousness of the solvers of this crime
goodread suspenseful
Thoroughly enjoyed it. Couldn’t put it down. Couldn’t wait to get to the end. I will read more by this author.
I really enjoyed reading this book. The protagonist is a Dirty Harry style retired Police Detective with a “Take no Prisoners” attitude. The plot has a few twists, but the really interesting aspect of the book is the cast of quirky supporting characters that show up on both sides of the law. I figured out fairly early that things were not what they seemed with murder victim, but that’s not atypical in a mystery. However, the plot twisted enough that I had to continue reading to figure out why and who did the deed. If you like Reacher or Bosch you will like this guy.
Interesting protagonist, albeit a little over-the-top. I’m not sure what it is, but the dialogue seems a little off. The author obviously know the geographical area well, but good intentions aside, what the protagonist gets away with is implausible.
This book got me hooked in the first page. So good most of my work waited until I finished it. A truly great book to read
Enjoyed reading this book. Liked the lead character. More like a movie detective than a realistic one. Good escape novel.
Wow! This story kept me up way past my bedtime because I had to know how it ended. Chance Means is one tough guy. He helps the underdog. He keeps his word and doesn’t tolerate disgusting jerks. I was rooting for him the whole time.
This book has a lot of action–almost non-stop. It was a little too much action and not enough character development, especially with the two characters in the romance. It had a lot of foul language, that, even though it fit the tough, ex-cop character, was more than I care for. If you like reading about different kinds of guns described in detail and bad people getting killed by them, then you will like this book.
The (hero) takes you a place of hard living. The way in which, life is treated like a tissue to be discarded and not to be counted. Chance Means, metes out a justice and you are dragged along on this finding of those responsible for a death of a teen and see the underbelly of society. Could you do this you ask yourself
A lot of violence but you don’t want to put it down to see if the guys eim.
