You think you know the world of magical boarding schools? Not from a teacher’s perspective at a school for at-risk youth. The series WOMBY’S SCHOOL FOR WAYWARD WITCHES is a whimsical urban fantasy set in a contemporary subculture of magical beings and monsters.Clarissa Lawrence is the daughter of the wickedest witch of all time who was also the most dangerous headmistress ever to serve at Womby’s … at Womby’s School for Wayward Witches. Clarissa would love to be the dark arts and crafts teacher, but until she learns to control her magic, she’s stuck being the fine arts and crafts teacher.
As much as Clarissa Lawrence wants to share the joys of watercolors with her students, she knows it’s going to take more than literacy strategies and art therapy to help students survive against soul-sucking Fae after graduation. She’s going to need to learn magic ASAP if she’s going to help her students, survive her tutelage under an evil magical mentor, and figure out who’s trying to kill her this quarter.
When Clarissa finds her mother’s diary outlining her experiments with the Fae Fertility Paradox, she is desperate to uncover the mysteries of her mother’s past that will help with her own magic problems of the present. She suspects this book will solve the feud between Fae and Witchkin.
Either that or it will cause an all-out war.

Oh Clarissa. I still feel like she is a teenager trying to be an adult in this book. She really knows how to get herself into trouble, but I like that she is slowly learning to think things through. Even if it is painstakingly slow. Another great read from Sarina Dorie
I loved this book. In fact, I loved the whole series. It’s not a sweet sort of series with rainbows and lollipops so don’t read it if that’s what you’re looking for. But, if you’re looking for an enjoyable book, Read it.
Wow. I am impressed!!! More older teen and adult version of a magic school with the teacher being like Harry Potter learning magic. I was thinking it was a children’s book.
My first in this series of books. Can’t wait to go read the ones I missed. I will say that the books stands on its own feet very well. The references to past books and incidents are done well enough that you can follow the story and not be lost. Actually makes you want to go read the others so you can see the details you have missed. at least for me.
Is her roommate or Thatch like an Eskimo pie? All hard on the outside but a softie on the inside?
There is one scene in the book that I do not recommend for younger people. Note this is MY opinion.
I received this book as an ARC and this is my freely given and honest review.
Clarissa is the daughter of one the the most wicked witches of all time and the most dangerous headmistress to work at Womby’s School for Wayward Witches. Clarissa can’t control her magic, so she is stuck teaching fine arts and crafts instead of the dark arts and crafts she prefers. But she has more important problems brewing, like the evil Fae that will not be good for her students. Then Clarissa discovers something her own mother did that just might help her find out why she is having trouble with her own magic and the feud between the Faes and the Witchkin. Can she do it? You will have to read the book to find the answers. I would like to thank Net Galley for a copy of this book for me to review.
Well written, funny, book is the Womby’s School for Wayward Witches series. These books are for older teens and adults due to some mature themes. Awesome story. The power of teachers and love can change the world. Children are not their parents, but are who they want to be. I love the way Clarissa stands up for her students, and has a great base of inherent goodness from her fairy godmother. I absolutely love this book and series!
I loved A handful of Hexes. This is the fourth book in the series and the characters are really getting more developed in this book. Clarissa is developing her magic and discovering more about her life and the magic world around her. There is a lot of action in this book. I really enjoyed the dynamics and character interactions. It was so difficult to put the book down once I started reading it. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
A Handful of Hexes is Book 4 in the Womby’s School For Wayward Witches series. This is an exceptionally well developed world with excellently developed characters. Book 4 is another adventure in the life of Clarissa. At Womby’s Clarissa is an art teacher not a student. Clarissa’s life never seems to run smoothly as she seems to have a knack for getting into bad situations. Although she is learning some spells they don’t seem to help her control her affinity or curb her impetuousness. Love this book and series. Sarina Dorie has a wonderful imagination and a way with words that keeps you reading to the end and are left with wanting more. Received an ARC and this is my voluntary and honest review.
First off if you haven’t read any of the other books in this series I recommend reading them in order. While it’s not essential it will make many of the relationships and character’s motivations make more sense in my opinion. I have mixed feelings about this book. While I think the premise is quite interesting there’s just so much going on it’s a bit overwhelming. Honestly I had trouble connecting with Clarissa the main character. She just seems so passive letting people boss her around like she is still a high school student rather than an adult and a fellow teacher. While there are sparks where I though here’s where she’s gonna turn it around like when she stood up for Maddy in the fae court it just never really happened. I’m not sure there was enough spark to make me want to try another book in the series. But your mileage may vary. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review.
This book is good as a read alone but I do suggest reading at least book 1 to get exactly how Clarissa’s life was when the witch stuff started.
Clarissa Lawrence is a witch who was not allowed to be a witch because she was the daughter of the most powerful evil witch there was in the witchkin world. She was raised by a very nice witch in the mortal realm. In this book she has become the Art teacher at Womby’s school for Wayward Witches. She has loved art since book 1. Since she knows no magic she is pretty much vulnerable to any evil attacks towards her or her students. Thatch is her mentor and is trying to protect her secret of who she is knew her mom. He keeps getting her involved in situations while trying to keep her from being magical but also scolding her for not being able to be magic. She finds a book that is written by her biological mom to try to figure out what she was researching and to find out more about her mom. This information could be helpful or dangerous either way it is dangerous knowledge for Clarissa to be playing with.
I liked this book. I am looking forward to others in the series.
