“Deep and grand and altogether extraordinary….Miraculous.” –The Washington Post “Artful…Powerful…Magical.” – The New York Times Book Review “Superb” – People “A Great Reckoning succeeds on every level.” –St. Louis Post-Dispatch #1 New York Times bestselling author Louise Penny pulls back the layers to reveal a brilliant and emotionally powerful truth in her latest spellbinding novel. When … When an intricate old map is found stuffed into the walls of the bistro in Three Pines, it at first seems no more than a curiosity. But the closer the villagers look, the stranger it becomes. Given to Armand Gamache as a gift the first day of his new job, the map eventually leads him to shattering secrets. To an old friend and older adversary. It leads the former Chief of Homicide for the Sûreté du Québec to places even he is afraid to go. But must. And there he finds four young cadets in the Sûreté academy, and a dead professor. And, with the body, a copy of the old, odd map. Everywhere Gamache turns, he sees Amelia Choquet, one of the cadets. Tattooed and pierced. Guarded and angry. Amelia is more likely to be found on the other side of a police line-up. And yet she is in the academy. A protégée of the murdered professor. The focus of the investigation soon turns to Gamache himself and his mysterious relationship with Amelia, and his possible involvement in the crime. The frantic search for answers takes the investigators back to Three Pines and a stained glass window with its own horrific secrets. For both Amelia Choquet and Armand Gamache, the time has come for a great reckoning.

I want to live with these characters!
I love all of Louise Penny’s novels. I have read them all and this one did not disappoint. Her characters are real, living, but fictional people. Her settings are warm and familiar, with characters that are in all of her novels and become like family to the reader. Did not disappoint and was worth waiting for.
One of my favorite Louise Penny /Three Pines/ Armand Gamache mysteries.
Love Louise Penny’s books. She takes you on a journey and you feel like you’re right there with the characters. I become completely engrossed in the story.
This novel is part of the Inspector Gamache series. Don’t read it unless you’ve read all the preceding books. They must be read in order. You can’t put these books down.
She’s a master writer, and has created this wonderful set of characters and quaint town (where so much happens). I’ve read them all, and have just downloaded her latest.
Louise Penny writes wonderful books.
All of her books are great!
I am such a fan of Penny’s characters. I love Ruth and her duck and Inspector is great. I always just wait for her latest. She is a sure thing everytime.
Louise Penny has created one of the great characters in Chief Inspector Gamache. You really need to read these books in order as the lives of the main characters change and grow throughout this series. These are unusual mysteries as they deal with the underlying issues that drive people to murder. During this series the characters will face personal challenges, loss and joy. I can not recommend these books enough.
My absolute favorite author. Start this series with her first one – you will find yourself reading book after book of hers.
I loved it! I really enjoyed this one, but I really enjoyed all of them too. This one in particular got me. It is very brilliant and sadly very tragic. I know Gamache will prevail and root out the corruption. This is a must read series! I can’t wait for the next book! Thank you so much Louise for sharing Three Pines with us.
I love this series!!! I have read all of the books and can’t wait for the next one.
Wonderful character brought forth logically and realistically in a wonderful setting.
Louise Penny is the best. I love visiting Three Pines.
Armand Gamache is so real, makes you wish he could be your friend. Yet so intelligent and savvy. Love all her books about him.
Multi-layered, engaging, suspenseful plot with many literary nuggets, surprises, and moments of psychological insight. The only minuses that knocked a star off for me were the overabundance of one-sentence paragraphs, which felt gimmicky at times, and too much Ruth and Rosa–they aren’t funny or interesting after the first two mentions.
All of Louise Penney’s books are so beautifully written that I revel in her wonderful words. She transports me to Three Pines every time, and I always want to live there and meet the characters. Ms. Penney is amazing, and I can always hardly wait for another adventure with Chief Inspector Gamache. I love these books!!!
Foodies will love it for these mouth watering meals served in the Quebec hinterland.
Louise Penny’s Gamache mysteries are all delightful as well as satisfying mystery reads. Her characters are all one of a kinders, and there is humor as well as tension.
