A thrilling tale of twists and turns, magic and murder.Cassie Dune spent her formative years under the watchful gaze of her mentor, Marc. As an agent with the Independent Necromancers’ Bureau, it was his job to deal with the reanimated, catch and remove unwanted ghosts, and track down rogue necromancers. Now, Cassie’s all grown up and an agent in her own right. Sure, she has the origins of her … right. Sure, she has the origins of her enhanced powers to contend with, and an ex-boyfriend who also happens to be a cop she can’t avoid. But for the most part, life’s good.
Then the unthinkable happens. Marc’s body is found in a local graveyard, his spirit severed to prevent Cassie from talking to him beyond the grave.
Cassie vows to catch his killer… although that doesn’t prove as easy as she’d hoped.
Between her cop ex-boyfriend; her over-protective ghost housemate, who seems hell-bent on improving Cassie’s diet; and the super-hot new partner she needs to break in — Cassie has her hands full.
Throw some gun-toting zombies into the mix, along with a rising body count, and the fight is on.
Will Cassie catch the killer or will she become the next victim?
Only one thing’s for certain… it’s time to rattle some bones!
This utterly addictive and fun, action packed mystery with a touch of romance will keep you gripped until the final shocking twist.

“I enjoy a story more when the female protagonist is intelligent, resilient and has a good sense of humour; I wasn’t disappointed here. Cassie Dune was all of these and more … there’s plenty of humour that made me smile plus some well written banter that’s giggle-worthy too.” ★★★★★ Flora’s Musings

“This book hit the nerves running and didn’t stop until the last word. Very well written, nail-biting, knee-knocking scenes … There is plenty of snarkiness to make it interesting and fun … Ms DeLuis makes this writing creation just right. Very enjoyable.” ★★★★★ Goodreads Reviewer

I loved this book!!! It was exciting with all it’s twists and turns. It really made it hard to put down. I love how kick ass Cassie is and her interactions with her ex Luke (who is the lead detective on the case) and her new partner Brandon. Definitely recommend to anyone who loves a good read that is hard to put down!
Cassie is a necromancer having been trained as a child by her grandmother to use her necromancer powers, as a child she watched a member of the INB ( Independent Necromancers’ Bureau) and joined them. Her mentor and friend Marc has been killed, and it looks like a colleague may be the culprit. A member of the Houston office Brandon has just landed in Wales to join their team, and he hits the ground running, Cassie has to work with her ex-boyfriend, Luke who is a member of the police force. Cassie is determined to be included in the investigation, just as much as Luke is determined to keep her out of it. As they get closer to the killer, more zombies attack, but it is not that they attack that is strange but HOW they do so…
This is a fast paced book, well written with a great “who done it” plenty red herrings to go along the way
I liked the way that Marc is talked about by Cassie and her colleagues it certainly made the dead man very alive for us, he was a curmudgeon but Cassie looked up to him and perhaps saw him as family. It is an interesting story, I have not read anything by this author before, so I don’t know if the Independent Necromancers’ Bureau has been mentioned before in another series or if this “world” where zombies and the requirement of the INB is needed has been written about before this is labelled as book 1 of the INB, however I felt like I was missing part of the story. There is mention of an incident involving Cassie and her ex Luke, at the “Morgan House” where an artefact had been used. This seemed to be a pivotal case for Luke and Cassie’s relationship and seems important to how this murder is solved, it is mentioned throughout the book, so I felt I was missing pieces of the story (perhaps the author could have put a prelude in at the start of the book with the Morgan House incident, just to fill us in? ) I would also liked to have understood Cassie a bit better, her childhood and training with her Grandmother along with the tattoo she has would make for better understanding of everything that transpires in this book.
On saying that I was able to muddle through and come to my own conclusions about the afore mentioned “Morgan House” incident. Cassie is left with some thinking to do so I have no doubt book 2 won’t be far away. I will give it a go and see how it goes. If you have not read this author before as I have be prepared to make your won conclusions in places, but it is worth giving it a go.

Huh! I feel like I stepped into a Nancy Drew/ Alfred Hitchcock mystery and the more I read the more anxious I felt – who done it? Wow, I completely lost track of whatever was happening around me and got pulled into this story from the get go. I do like Cassie – maybe the fact that she has a ginger tabby makes me give her extra brownie points. Unfortunately, we walk into her story at when she gets called to the scene of her mentor’s death….and as the story progress we learn just what an impact he had made in her life.
These days it’s really hard to find a female main character with guts, intelligence and of course resilience. The fact that there’s a possible relationship on the cards also did not deter her from her main goal – finding Marc’s killer. I was quite surprised with the twists and turns in the book and it’s a testament to the author’s writing to keep a reader guessing until the end. I look forward to reading how she grows more into her power – which as a bonus, is not new to our MC. Really refreshing to read a book where the power is already established. I did end the book with a question mark – what did Luke really feel when he said “I felt it happen”….. I think Luke is going to play a big part going forward.
Thankfully, the author ends the book in a fashion that you do want to read more of Cassie and the cases she takes on, but not with a feeling of incompleteness or a cliffhanger. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.
