After a disastrous London Season that left her with a broken heart, Annis decided to retreat to the countryside, leaving all her painful memories behind. When two years later, though, she is forced to accompany her younger sister to her first Season, hurtful memories and fears that she has been trying to repress, will begin to resurface. As if her life was not already a tragedy in the making, the … the very man who broke her heart appears out of nowhere, once again turning her life upside down. Will Annis be able to heal the wounds of her past and give love a second chance, or will she never be able to trust a man again?
All these years Oliver could not take his mind off of Annis, even though she ran away from him without any explanation. The fateful moment he meets her again, he knows deep inside that she is the woman he wants to spend the rest of his life with, and decides to do whatever it takes to win her back. Will he ever find the reason why Annis abandoned him and threw the opportunity of a happy life by his side? How far will he go to convince her that his life has no meaning if she is not in it?
When a third person tries to put obstacles in their path, Annis and Oliver must prove that nothing can keep them apart. Even though their love is still alive, rife misunderstandings still prevent them from leaving the bad memories behind and start a new chapter in their life. Will their love be strong enough to survive it all, or the events of the past will never stop haunting them?

My first thought after reading this story is that Annis is a selfish coward and she truly couldn’t be in love with Oliver. She doubted this man at every turn, and made him absolutely miserable. Was she even sorry after everything was revealed at the end, No! She gave no apology. Our hero is a better person and his only thought was always of Annis. He did not deserve for her to run away, but he did not pursue her either. Which brings into question, why did he run off to the Continent with a broken heart instead of pursuing her and getting an answer? This story has these two failings, and never explains them. Our true heroine is Lucilla, the brave lioness and hero, Elmore, who forces Lucilla and Annis to hear Oliver out. This story is based on farce and this is where it fails, because it is not even funny.
I loved the overall storyline of H meets h, fall in love, another woman lies to breaks them up and it works. The liar has unrequited love for the H and if she can’t have him no one can. The h instead of trusting her man believed the lies and ran away for two years leaving a hurt and broken man who did not know what happened. I just had a hard time with the h’s character. The way she behaved did not endear her to me. She was still experiencing the extreme pain and disappointment of two years ago. That is a long time not to at least make some headway forward in her life. Then when she found out she was to chaperone her younger sister for her first season in London, she practically begged to be released from duty so she would not have to fear running into the H. Her parents gave her no choice. After being away for two years the H returns to London not really wanting to be there. At a ball the h/H cross paths and he could not understand the hostility coming from the h. He really had no idea why she broke up with him and ran away for two years. But the liar was in the wings still observing and tried again to keep them apart. It took an act of the Almighty for things to get worked out. It is an interesting read if you set aside your first impression of the h. After the fact she does seem better composed. I enjoyed the extended epilogue it was light and breezy.
She let interference, gossip and other things to chase her away from the man she loved. A couple of years later she comes back for her sister. And guess who is there? He loves her also but doesn’t understand what happens. Now throw someone else into the mix causing trouble. They have to work it out now. I received a review copy and voluntarily review it.
