Big Little Lies meets … Morning America “Binge This!” Pick
Big Little Lies meets Presumed Innocent in this “irresistible domestic drama” (Washington Post) from the New York Times bestselling author of Reconstructing Amelia, in which a woman’s brutal murder reveals the perilous compromises some couples make—and the secrets they keep—in order to stay together.
Lizzie Kitsakis is working late when she gets the call. Grueling hours are standard at elite law firms like Young & Crane, but they’d be easier to swallow if Lizzie was there voluntarily. Until recently, she’d been a happily underpaid federal prosecutor. That job and her brilliant, devoted husband Sam—she had everything she’d ever wanted. And then, suddenly, it all fell apart.
No. That’s a lie. It wasn’t sudden, was it? Long ago the cracks in Lizzie’s marriage had started to show. She was just good at averting her eyes.
The last thing Lizzie needs right now is a call from an inmate at Rikers asking for help—even if Zach Grayson is an old friend. But Zach is desperate: his wife, Amanda, has been found dead at the bottom of the stairs in their Brooklyn brownstone. And Zach’s the primary suspect.
As Lizzie is drawn into the dark heart of idyllic Park Slope, she learns that Zach and Amanda weren’t what they seemed—and that their friends, a close-knit group of fellow parents at the exclusive Brooklyn Country Day school, might be protecting troubling secrets of their own. In the end, she’s left wondering not only whether her own marriage can be saved, but what it means to have a good marriage in the first place.

I loved A Good Marriage, a fast-paced pageturner that combines the complexity of a legal thriller with the emotional resonance of domestic suspense. You won’t be able to put it down!
Part legal thriller, part domestic suspense, pure page turner, this is a novel that will have you questioning everything you thought you knew about marriage.
A Good Marriage is a smart, provocative, insightful page-turner. I couldn’t put it down.
A Good Marriage is absolutely, positively riveting. I could not put this down! Kimberly McCreight has crafted a captivating, thrilling story that bolts out of the gate at a breakneck speed and never misses a step.
I feel like I’ve been on such a book high after reading this. Wow. If you love hanging onto your seat while reading a thriller, this is the book for you. There were twists and turns. It was all I could do not to skip to the back and peek. I didn’t see this one coming. All the characters were easy to know. The author does a good job with the set up and execution of the story. I felt like I was in the book. Books like this really show us just how much we may not really know someone we are close to. After reading this, if my husband isn’t who I think he is, I don’t want to know! We should always be prepared in life for the unthinkable I guess. But how devastating. I want to tell more about it so bad but I don’t want to ruin it.
I guess I’m a bit of a voyeur – I really wanted to peek inside these Park Slope marriages especially knowing that they were having a big annual key party in 2020. Oh, and did I mention there was a murder? Lots of twists and turns in this one, and for me, with the attention span of a gnat, was great as an audiobook – it held my attention
Omigahhhhh…after falling into bed at 1:00AM reading this I woke up at 5:30 thinking about it and just finished now.
Gorgeous Amanda Grayson ends up dead after attending a “Key Party” thrown by the parents at her son’s elite school.
Really.
The suspect list is large: her douchy husband, her stalker, her friends, their husbands, her social circle from the school. Everyone has secrets and everyone sucks and it’s fabulous.
5 stars ALL DAY for this nasty little thriller that truly thrilled.
Thank you to my GR buddy, Michelle, for writing a review that sent me running straight to this book!
Full of dark secrets and surprising twists, A Good Marriage explores what lies beneath the surface of friendships, families, and communities. A captivating psychological thriller that gripped me from beginning to end.
Buckle.up.friends. This book was BRILLIANT. And by brilliant, I mean rush to order this immediately as it’s officially pub day for #AGoodMarriage by Kimberly McCreight and I can’t stop thinking about this one.
There is nothing better than finding an amazing author who continues to write knockout books. I read #reconstructingamelia a few years ago and was completely hooked from the first chapter. This novel was no different. I especially loved the popcorn chapters which beautifully transitioned between characters. Also, speaking of characters, these ones were exquisite. Everyone had a secret, everyone was flawed and ultimately everyone at some point of the story could have been the murderer, which is why up until the last page, you were holding your breath! Oh, and I would totally want Lizzie representing me if I needed legal help – total BADASS.
And what is it with sex cults/sex parties this year in books? I absolutely loved this element of sass and drama because you never did know exactly what happened that night and who was with whom. Taboo topics always make for interesting novels, so bring it on. Some of my favorite chapters were the grand jury testimonies of people who were at this infamous party … and their embarrassment was palpable!
My only question(s)…what happens to Chase? What really went down with Lizzie’s father? Does the murderer get what is coming to them? The chilling written confession at the end of the book has left me reeling. I need closure!
This is a fast paced, extremely well written #thriller that will keep you guessing and questioning – how well do you really know those you love? Thank you so much for allowing me to read and review this novel, @harpercollins
Secrets, lies and betrayal drive this page-turning story that combines the complexity of a legal thriller with domestic suspense.
Dealing with problems in her own marriage and now having to deal with defending a friend for a murder that Lizzie knew he didn’t commit was not what Lizzie was looking forward to.
Lizzie was friends with Zach in college and knew he wasn’t capable of murder, but did you really ever fully know someone? The married couples in this book definitely didn’t know each other and had secrets from each other and from friends.
Zach and Amanda lived in a posh neighborhood. It was a life Amanda didn’t grow up with. In fact, Amanda grew up impoverished. Did her childhood have something to do with her being murdered?
We see glimpses of Amanda before she met Zach and we always see Amanda as meek, but pleasant. We also feel her fear each time she gets a call that only has heavy breathing in the response to her hello. She knows who it is, but we are kept in the dark.
A GOOD MARRIAGE dragged until one-third of the way, but once secrets became revealed, the investigation got underway, and the characters confessed, the interest and tension definitely picked up.
If you like books with twists, turns, secrets, and surprises from all angles, you won’t want to miss A GOOD MARRIAGE. 4/5
This book was given to me by the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.
This is a book about four couples. Four with their own set of problems. Three of these couples seem very happily married for the most part. But they all have problems. They all have the world at their fingertips but along with that are major problems that lead to one woman being killed and one defending the husband. All of their lives will interconnect and some are the best of friends. Secrets will come to light that none see coming.
This book is so filled with twists and turns. I thought I had it all figured out but boy I was wrong. I truly was not even close.
Amanda, who is married to Zach, is dead. You learn this at the very beginning of this story. Her husband is arrested for the murder. There are several things that make him look ripe for this murder. He’s a bit of a cold man. I didn’t like him at all. He was not one you will connect with. Amanda had anything and everything money could buy and a son she adored with all her heart. The thing she didn’t have was the kind of love and support her two best friends had. Zach was a workaholic and thought that was all they needed.
Lizzie, who is married to Sam, is the attorney who defends Zach. She knew him from law school many years prior. As much as he is unlikable he does deserve a good defense. Lizzie didn’t want the job of being his defense attorney but she has no choice now. She’s a good attorney no doubt. She leaves no stone unturned getting to the bottom of things. A strong and very smart woman who has problems of her own. Sam, her husband, is an alcoholic and is prone to blackouts. Blackouts where he remembers nothing. He does things yet can’t remember them after.
The other two couples, Kerry and Sarah, who have been married a very long time and have three children. They love each other very much and Kerry will do anything for Sarah. Is he as good as he seems or does he had some dark secrets that will come to light. Do they have secrets that need to be exposed? Then there is Sebe and Maude. They do have a great marriage. Problems? Of course. All marriages have problems. But they do have what they consider a great life. Everyone loves going to their parties. Their once a year parties that happen when all the children are away at sleep away camp. That is when all the fun happens and this time trouble…
Most of the characters in this book are so likable. There is something about each that you may relate too. With the exception of Zach who in my opinion is very cold. It’s like he’s dead inside, almost. But does that make him a killer? Maybe, maybe not. This book is very well written and the descriptions are so well developed you’ll feel like you are walking down the tree lined sidewalks or running through the forest and up the steps that Amanda ran. It’s a story of a murder. What appears to be a brutal murder. It’s the story of one woman’s hopes and dreams. Her horrible childhood and there is a touch of mental health issues included. A lot of what being an alcoholic can do to a person and what some love, laughter and just being a friend can do.
I really did enjoy this book. It caught me right from the start and I could not stop until I found out who killed Amanda. It held my attention from the very beginning.
Thank you to #BookishFirst, #NetGalley, #KimberlyMcCreight, #HarperCollinsPublishing for this ARC. My own true feelings are expressed here.
A 5 star book and a very high recommendation.
Lizzie is a defense attorney. She is at work when she receives a call from an old friend who has been charged with killing his wife. Zach needs a lawyer he can trust. This story has so many secrets! In Lizzie’s home life, her husband is an alcoholic and it causes so much trouble for Lizzie! Zach’s marriage is not what it seems at all and Lizzie has to figure out what is truth and what is lies. This book was a great murder thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat reading. I received an advanced readers copy and all opinions are my own.
In a quirky sort of way, I tend to savor books, reading slowly to take it all in. Not with this one! It’s quick-paced and riveting. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.
This one really kept me intrigued. A lot of bouncing balls that eventually all bounce into place by the end after many false leads and red herrings. The setting of the Park Slope neighborhood in Brooklyn also pulled me right in not only for its physical aesthetic (beautiful brownstones, comfy cafes and coffee shops) but also for the societal mores of the moneyed class that resides there. Enjoyable read.
Very entertaining.
Been recommending it to everyone. One of the best mysteries I’ve read in a long time!
It was an easy read but the ending was manipulative and I felt unsatisfied.
It kept you wondering what was going to happen. I usually figure out “who done it,” but this book really kept me guessing. Even at the end of the book, there were still some things the author left you to figure out on your own.
It had a very interesting plot.
We all make mistakes. Some big, some little. But even one little mistake can change your life. This is a bizarre story that involves adult sex, with a rather nonchalant attitude. Each new discovery leads down a different path. The rich and famous have their secrets too. Enjoy – a good book!
