A wonderful historical romance that takes readers back to the year of 1866. This is the second book written by Chloe Carley that I’ve read. Filled with twists and turns and unpredictable situations made things interesting and kept me turning pages. Clean reading with love and forgiveness being played out by the characters. I love that this Author quotes Bible verses and the love of God in her books. There was a few things I didn’t like in the story, that’s why four stars only. Editing was a little off but not enough to spoil my reading experience. I was disappointed that the two miners, Michael McClay and Emmit Rigsby drank Burbon Wiskey on three different occasions. The use of alcohol by the two characters, to the point of being drunk, who on other occasions claimed to be Christians seemed out of place in the story.
Katherine Wheyl and her mother had ran an orphanage together, since her father died. After her mother passed away Katherine operated it on her own. Money was always tight and often she had to beg the town’s people for food to feed the twenty children under her care. She received no help financially from the town’s budget so she had to make do with her vegetable garden. Then came Mayor Baugh informing her that a railroad would be built through her property and the orphanage would be torn down. What would happen to the children and where could they live?
Michael McClay and Emmitt Rigsby had put out all the money they had to buy an old mine hoping to find gold. People called them fools until one day they actually did find a vain of gold left over from former miners, years ago. Things looked very good for them until Anton Harding, representative of the railroad company ,arrived in town and paid Michael a visit. The two shared a past and Anton harbored bitter feelings against Michael. Anton swears revenge on Michael for what he did to him when they were children. Can Michael reason with him and make things right between them or will Anton follow through with his threats?
Readers of Historical Fiction and Christian Fiction will enjoy this book. It has about 368 pages that makes a nice reading experience.
