I definitely opened up more to Bryna in Gold as she continued to grow as a person and tried to find her place in the world. This installment was so fast paced that at 60% so much had happened that I couldn’t believe how much story was still left. A lot changes for Bryna and at the end I’m glad because it shaped her into the woman she becomes.
Let me start off by saying, Kyla you have captured my heart with the story of Bryna in Gold! I have always loved all of your characters you have brought to life in the past, but in this one, I was in awe to see the character development and how much Bryna grew up from where we saw her begin. From her heart break in Diamonds, to becoming a digger with no heart at the beginning of Gold, and her finally recognizing what she truly wanted in the end of Gold and going after it, or him. I was really hoping after reading Diamonds, there would be a re-connection between B & Jude. I loved their story together and I really had hope that Gold would bring them back together in a positive way. I was really sad how Diamonds ended with Jude walking away from her for his family and was looking forward to Jude somehow being her happily ever after. I can now say after reading her full story three times, I am so glad that is not where her story went.
***SPOILERS***
Gold picks up with B starting her first year at Las Vegas State. After a heartbreaking senior year of high school, Bryna is determined to move on and forget about the cause of her turmoil, Jude. She will leave her heart out of the game and have fun without getting attached to anyone.
“This wasn’t about love. This was about lust and diamonds. The longer he lusted, the more diamonds.”
B meets the wealthy Hugh and begins a “relationship” with him. She knows he’s just looking for a good time and she will give it to him in exchange for all the finer things in life. Throughout their story you can feel B pulling away from him and he is grasping to hold on to her. Hugh falls in love with her over their long period of time together, but B has left out her heart in her escapades with him. She crushes him in the end, realizing their time has come to an end.
During the story she becomes friends with a character from Diamonds that was briefly introduced when she did a college visit to LV State, Eric Wilkins. Eric was an injured football player and can’t play anymore. He is on the coaching staff now and spends time with her during travel to away games and at practices. He unexpectedly takes her for ice cream during Christmas break and a strong friendship is formed. She feels safe around Eric and opens up to him unlike she has with anyone else ever, not even with Jude. After all, her ex Gates had told her he was gay during their college visit, so he is safe. No worries of anything other than a friendship.
We are also reacquainted with Pace, B’s jerk step-brother. He ends up causing more havoc for B by attending LV State to play football after a failed black mail attempt. He shows up and moves into her house for the semester. Trihn and Stacia are two of the stories other new characters, and Bryna’s best friends. Their stories will play out in the next two books of the series, Platinum and Silver.
This has truly been the first book of 2015 that I couldn’t put down. I am 55 books into my Goodreads goal of 100 this year, and Gold really was my favorite of 2015 so far. Kyla did such a great job, per usual, and even though I was thinking I was going to hate Bryna after her behavior in Diamonds and beginning of Gold, she surprised me and turned out to be a breath of fresh air.
“But without even trying, we fell together. You and I. Not easily. We fought. We argued. We yelled at each other. You didn’t put me on a pedestal. You treated me like I was a normal person. Not a queen or a bitch or a slut. And without even knowing it, I fell head over heels for you.”
Who will Bryna say this too??? Read Gold to find out!!!
