Douglas needed a miracle. What he got was a genie…A Gift of Jacinth is a charming, playful paranormal romance novel with a happy ever after and no cliffhanger.Veterinarian Douglas McCandliss considered himself an ordinary kinda guy with an ordinary kinda life. He had no idea why he’d bought the old silver teapot, and when a young woman appeared before him claiming to be a genie, he almost … before him claiming to be a genie, he almost wished he hadn’t. If only she wasn’t so damned cute.
Ebullient and cheerful, Jacinth loved granting wishes and helping people. So she was thrilled when her teapot’s new owner, a single father with custody of two young children, asked her to stay until he could find a nanny. The problem was, the longer she stayed, the more she was attracted to Douglas, and she was certainly not willing to turn over care of Ben and little Molly to just anybody. But she was a 900 year old genie, and had no intention of falling in love with a mortal man. None whatsoever.

Allie McCormack’s “A Gift of Jacinth” (Wishes & Dreams Book 2) is an absolutely delightful spin on an old tale.
Douglas McCandliss is granted his wish and has fallen in love with his wish-granting, teapot dwelling Djinn, Jacinth.
Just wonderful characters, well written and charming. Ben and Molly were a joy! This is a sweet, magical, engaging story that will have you giggling and maybe shedding a few tears.
Thank you so much Ms. McCormack for this sweet and fun romance. Simply delightful!
Douglas, a veterinarian, is heartbroken that he can not find Ben and Molly, his children taken by his ex two years ago. When a genie appears from a antique teapot he just bought, you know what his first wish will be. All reunited, Jacinth stays on to be a nanny for the kids and starts to fall for the little family and vice versa. Loved how she made friends with others so easily, especially the PJ party and smores. The romance hits a snag when Jacinth gets too thrown by her feelings for Douglas and the kids. With help from her mom and clan, they reunite. Loved the ending at the mall. Very well done.

Jacinth, a nine hundred year old Djinn, is looking for the right person to help out. Dr. Douglas McCandliss has been searching for his two children these past two years with no luck. Doug is frantic that he’ll never find them. Doug buys a silver teapot which turns his world upside down. A strange woman grants his wish but something more happens. Jacinth helps Doug and the children adjust to their lives. Will Jacinth admit her feelings? Can Doug and the children convince Jacinth to stay? Your answers await you in A Gift of Jacinth.
Getting out of her own way…
Jacinth is a Djinn (genie), a wish-granting, teapot dwelling free spirit with a pixie-like appearance and a caravan’s worth of magical powers. Douglas, veterinarian and miserable divorced single dad, is in desperate need of her – his alcoholic ex has stolen his children, Benny and Molly. For two years he’s searched high and low, hired investigators, done all he could do – but they’ve vanished. Douglas’ first intro to Jacinth and Djinn magic is the funniest thing I’ve read in ages. Jacinth does her genie thing, the kids come home to Douglas, and Jacinth agrees to stay on as nanny. You can imagine what that leads to… only Jacinth adamantly refuses to fall in love with a human – and she has her reasons. A little maternal input and a whole lot of encouragement from fellow Djinn, not to mention Douglas, advocating for their love…hmmm. What’s it gonna be, Djinn-girl – HFN or never knowing true love? By reading this book, you’ll get lots of giggles and a few tears, a delightful riff on the Aladdin fable, and some fine Bedouin tribal life details in the world-building – everything a romance reader could wish for. Teapot not included. This is a voluntary, no magic involved ARC review.
Jacinth has such a beautiful heart!
This lovely romance picks up right after the HEA in Wishes in a Bottle as Jacinth embarks on a new venture with Douglas, the man who acquires her magical teapot and is absolutely flabbergasted at the idea of a genie – Djinn – willing to grant him three wishes. He wants nothing to do with any of it, until Jacinth asks, “What do you want more than anything in the world?”
Having lost his two children two years before when they were kidnapped by their non-custodial mother, all Douglas wants is to have them safe back at home. This isn’t your mother’s Bewitched, where a snap of the fingers gets the intended result with no regard for explaining how it all happened. The details shown in this story are exquisite as both Jacinth and Douglas balance taking care of the children with keeping the Djinn secret safe.
The issue of a romance between Jacinth and Douglas is not insurmountable, but it is fraught with baggage that Jacinth carries from her own Djinn/human parental combination. I loved how the author paid attention to both sides of this complex situation, and loved even more how it was all worked out in the end. Like the first book, this is a standalone romance, though there are overlapping events that this book shares with the next book, so if you’re as enchanted by the story as I was you’ll want to dive right into Book 3, A Cat for Troy, as soon as you can.
I did have a minor issue with the timeline (how can Douglas be born a year or so after the ’60s and still be only 31 today?) but that was easily overshadowed by the excellent story and intriguing action. These books are unlike any paranormal I’ve ever read before, and for the creativity and ingenuity alone this series is well worth adding to your collection. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
3.5 Stars
This was a great addition to this series and once again, I enjoyed this updated take on a classic tale. I found the characters to be entertaining.

“A Gift of Jacinth” by Allie McCormack stars a genie – Jacinth – and a single dad. The troubles and drama of modern life – family can be both joy and heartwrenching agony (his children’s mom is bad news) – are beautifully explored in this gentle love story. The touch of magic adds to the romance, but it’s Jacinth’s compassion that I enjoyed most. This novel is magical in the best way – a celebration of love.
