A funeral, a ghost, a murder . . . It’s all in a day’s work for Emma Lee Raines . . .especially when the ghost turns out to be someone very dear to her heart. Debbie Dually, psychic and friend who has guided Emma Lee since the she was bopped on the head from a falling plastic Santa, local undertaker Emma Lee Raines is told she’s suffering from “funeral trauma.” Debbie Dually is the one who … one who informed Emma Lee that she wasn’t crazy, she was a Betweener, someone who can communicate with ghosts with the not-so-dearly departed. In fact, she told Emma Lee how she was the only one that could help solve their murder to help them rest in eternal peace.
This time Debbie Dually finds herself needing Emma’s help. This means solving her own murder.
Emma goes deep undercover as a fake psychic in order to see into the past and help Debbie cross over. Emma Lee doesn’t realize this opens up a whole can of new Betweener clients that refuse to leave her alone.
When Emma Lee is tagged as the number one suspect in Debbie Dually’s death, her handsome state trooper boyfriend, Jack Henry, has no choice but to come back to Whispering Falls and get to the bottom of what is going on before it’s too late and Emma Lee goes to the state pen for a very long time.

Fun series!! Great addition to series
Great, fun series! Grew up with a Dad that taught at a mortuary school. I was always hearing about the tricks they played on students. This series brings back memories of my childhood and Dad. Love them!
This whole series is great and this book is just as entertaining as the rest . If you like your mysteries with laughs , ghosts and never taking themselves too seriously then this series is for you . Fun to read and very entertaining cozy mystery
Although A Ghostly Suspect is the 8th book in the Ghostly Southern Mysteries series, it is the first I’ve read from this wonderfully magical and supernatural cozy series written by the ohmygoshsheisso talented, Tonya Kappes. I loved it, and can’t wait to go back to book #1 and catch up! I thoroughly enjoyed meeting Emma, her quirky friends, and spitfire Granny too, of course, in the small town of Sleepy Hollow, Kentucky. When Emma’s friend and mentor is killed and Emma becomes the prime suspect in her murder, Emma has to sift through all of the motives and clues to find the real murderer. And what a shock it was when the murderer was revealed! Wow! What a wonderful twist, and I absolutely loved it! This is a quick read, thoroughly engaging, and written in the conversational Southern style that is uniquely Tonya Kappes.
I volunteered to read an ARC of this book, and all thoughts and opinions provided here are my own.
A Ghostly Suspect is book eight in the Ghostly Southern Mysteries series. This series has captivated me, and I always look forward to a new book to devour. And devour I did. This was another great story, and I can’t wait for more. Keep them coming!
Emma Lee Raines runs her family funeral home and after a bop on the head from a falling plastic Santa, she is able to see ghosts. But not just any ghosts…. she can see those that have been murdered. They are betweeners and they need her to help solve their murder so that they can follow the light to everlasting eternity. Emma Lee is surprised to find her mentor and psychic friend Debbie at her doorstep, but before she discovers why Debbie is in town, the poor woman is murdered.
Emma Lee finds herself somehow suspect number one and her customers are leaving her for another funeral home. Emma Lee won’t stand for that and with the help of her friend Maize, they soon go on the hunt for a murderer.
This writer has a flair for writing cozy mysteries. She has a way with story-telling that keeps her audience entertained and fully immersed in the story. If you love cozy mysteries with a southern style, lots of quirky and humorous characters, a bit of romance, lots of mystery and suspense, and tons of madcap adventure then you will want to pick up this book as your next read.
This is book die in A Ghostly Southern Mystery series by Tonya Kappes. Emma Lee just can’t help herself but get involved when she needs to help a murder victim cross over.
Love the characters in this series. Wonder what is in store for Granny. Always love the humor and small town feel of Sleepy Hollow, Kentucky.
Ending surprised me. Can’t wait to see what adventures are ahead for John Henry and Emma Lee.
I received an ARC prior to publication and decided to voluntarily review it. Opinions expressed are my own.
This was my first visit to Sleepy Hollow, but it definitely won’t be my last. Emma Jean has an interesting gift of helping people that are between the physical world and the after life and I can’t wait to learn more about it. And I love Granny and all of her quirkiness. She is a real spit fire! The mystery in this book was unique because the person that was killed is a psychic and she wants Emma Jean to give messages to people. This story was a great way to pass an afternoon and I kept reading until I reached the last page. I’m excited to see what happens next in Sleepy Hollow.
I received a complimentary copy of this ebook from Kappes Review Krew. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Emma Lee Raines is excited with how well her funeral home is doing, she would never wish anyone dead but she appreciates all the business coming her way. When a psychic friend of hers stops by and really needs to talk they end up getting into an argument, and before Emma can figure out what is going on Debbie leaves. Later that day Emma is shocked to find out that not only is Debbie dead her ghost is hanging around waiting for Emma to solve her murder. It soon comes to light that she was poisoned and the police are looking straight at Emma. You see the tea and glass that Debbie drank from look just like the ones Emma uses at the funeral home. Emma knows that she must find a killer and soon because her business is being affected, people are starting to move their loved ones to the only other funeral home in town. The suspect list seems to grow as she is looking for clues into who killed her friend and why. There is a stalker who threatened Debbie, an ex-husband who turns out not to be and ex, and several other psychics. With so many places to look, Emma is afraid she’ll go bankrupt before she figures it all out. Follow along as Emma, along with her best friend, investigate the murder of Debbie in hopes of finding a killer. This is such a fun series and truly brings the south to life. I love the characters, sayings, and just the craziness of it all.
I loved this installment of the Ghostly Southern Mysteries! Emma Lee loses a dear friend, the one who helped her understand why she sees ghosts who have been murdered. I love the mix of paranormal mystery, cozy little town filled with fun quirky characters and of course a little romance. I love the twists and turns that left me guessing until the last second.
Most definitely recommend!
Emmy Lee is what the call a between she can see and talk to people who has not passed over she solves some of their murders. This is a great small town ghostly southern mystery. This is I believe the 7th or 8th book but I didn’t get lost it stood alone I want to go back and catch up. I highly recommend this.
I received this book as an ARC copy and decided to review it voluntarily.
This was the first book I read in this series and I really loved it. I read this in one sitting. I love the characters. I love that Emma Lee can see ghosts. I love how Emma Lee solves the murder of the ghosts that come to her. I received a copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.
This is the 8th book in the Ghostly Southern Mystery Series; I haven’t read anything else in the series, but this works great as a stand-alone. I’m a huge fan of Tonya’s other series, and like the others, there’s tons of “southern” here, which I love! The dialogue is authentic and the characters and setting are charming. I tend to shy away from paranormal cozies, but like most I’ve ended up reading, I ultimately love the way the paranormal is seamlessly woven into the story in a non-creepy way. There are plenty of laughs here while solving this cozy mystery. I highly recommend this book and plan to read the entire series ASAP. I was provided a free ARC of this book from the author, but my opinions are my own.
A Ghostly Suspect is Tonya Kappes eighth entry in her Ghostly Southern Mysteries. I have so missed Emma Lee Raines and Jack Henry Ross!!
It’s been about a year since Emma Lee had a Betweener case, and she’s shocked when her mentor, Debbie Dually arrives at Eternal Slumber, highly agitated. Suddenly she’s found dead and Emma Lee is Suspect number one! With Jack Henry out of town working his new State Trooper job, and Sleepy Hollow’s new Sheriff gunning for Emma Lee, she has her hands full.
Ms. Kappes has created a small town with enough depth – and kooky characters – you can all but smell the Magnolias and taste the sweet tea.
Can Emma Lee solve the murder, get her clients back from Burns Funeral Home, and save Jack Henry’s job before she’s arrested?
Another great read from the incredibly talented Tonya Kappes!
Emma Lee, a betweener, has to help the spirits she encounters solve their murders so they can cross over. That is all I’m going to tell you about this wonderfully entertaining series! This book does fine as a standalone but it would do you better to read the others too as the characters develop and allow you to ‘live life’ with them. Hunky John Henry and Emma have their own story besides the fun and twists and turns in solving the murder in each story. All of the characters are super charming and entertaining and add just the right ingredients to this fun and well-written book and series. Don’t hesitate another minute, get this page-turner now. I received a complimentary copy and am providing my honest, unsolicited review so you know this is worth downloading!
Another fun adventure with Emma Lee Raines! I loved the ending, and I can’t wait to see what Tonya Kappes has planned for Emma Lee, Jack Henry and Granny. I really love this series! All of the characters are great!
I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary Advance Reader Copy.
Love these characters. They are so fun. When Emma’s friend is murdered, Emma is the number one suspect. She can’t sit back and wait for them to arrest her, she has to find the killer herself. There are plenty of suspects and maybe she should look a little closer to home.
A cute mystery involving a female undertaker who helps ghosts who have been murdered find their killers. Her boyfriend who is a state trooper helps even though he could be fired, that’s what I call love. The story has an unexpected twist and a very nice ending. I received a complimentary copy and I am voluntarily reviewing.
I have to say even though I seriously love everything Tonya writes I am especially fond of the Ghostly Southern Mysteries, Emma-lee is such an amazing and endearing character I always look forward to her next mystery because it’s always such a surprise to read and each story is always full of amazing characters and wonderful plot twists.
John Henry was awesome as always, Granny was a chuckling delight and so many other characters just pulled this story together into one fabulous read.
Emma Lee owns Eternal Slumber Funeral Home and suffers from “funeral trauma” – another way of saying she sees dead people. While the residents the town of Sleepy Hollow, KY just shake their heads and think poor thing, she’s a bit cuckoo, Emma Lee really does see dead people – the ones who got that way by being murdered. They come to her for help finding their killers so they can continue their journey. Well, it’s been several years since her last encounter with a ghost in need and she’s very much okay with that. May it last forever as far as she is concerned. Then her friend and mentor, Debbie Dually shows up at Eternal Slumber, very agitated. To some who overhear their conversation, it comes across as confrontational which doesn’t bode well for what comes next. Very soon afterwards, Emma Lee is visiting her Granny on the porch of her Granny Zula’s Sleepy Hollow Inn when the peace is disrupted across the town square – the body of Debbie Dually has been found and her ghost is standing next to Emma Lee. Here we go again. Time to find a killer no matter that the police are looking at Emma Lee as suspect #1 and only. When dealing with a ghost in this situation, the only thing poor Emma Lee can do is find the killer and release the ghost. Easier said than done. The new sheriff, Trevor O’Neill (as Emma Lee says, the thorn in her behind) really dislikes her and makes it clear in oh, so many ways. He takes great joy in loading her up with parking tickets and then showing up at the funeral home to demand payment….like yesterday if not sooner. Sheesh.
Now she really needs help of her own, like a lawyer, fast. Her boyfriend, Jack Henry Ross, the former sheriff, is back in town and ready to help her stay out of then slammer. Also willing and able to help clear her name and probably save Eternal Slumber as well – this really isn’t good for business -are her Granny Zula and Mazie Watkins, the town librarian. It’s Emma Lee’s dream team and her only hope.
I always enjoy spending reading time with these characters. They are well developed, multi faceted and I think would be fun to hang out with. The idea of sitting on Granny Zula’s porch sipping sweet tea really appeals to me. Add a well crafted mystery with a ghost and a twist I never saw coming, well, I’m eager for the next installment.
