“A Ghostly Secret” earns 5/5 Healthy Green Concoctions from Granny!
I am such a fan of Tonya Kappes’ A Ghostly Southern Mystery, one of the few series that I’ve actually read every single book. This seventh book is just as exciting, but with a twist that incorporates a cold case without any direct connection to Emma Lee. Tonya focuses more on the ability to investigate from scratch using a variety of resources rather than personal knowledge of the victim and suspects. The characters continue to drive the story with love interests having challenges and losses being hard to adjust to. And Granny? Well, for fans you know what I mean, and to newbies, Granny is an absolute delight, but also tests Emma Lee’s patience…you can’t miss her spiky red hair! This all adds such a realism that you feel connected to them and invested in the outcome. The setting of Sleepy Hollow, Kentucky and the southern mores, issues running a funeral parlor, and trying to keep Granny in check play out in the background along with Emma Lee turning thirty and dealing with the southern view that if you weren’t married at thirty, you are an ‘old maid.’ You’ve got the book, now brew up a pitcher of sweet tea and sit in the cool of the evening…Enjoy!
“Disclosure: A review copy of this book was sent to me by the author/publisher. All of the above opinions are my own.”
Emma Lee Raines owns a funeral home. After an unfortunate accident, she has also become a Betweener, someone who sees ghosts of murdered people, and she tries to help solve the mystery of their murders so they can cross over. Not only can she see dead people, but she can also talk to them. This creates problems when she’s trying to keep her “gift” a secret because people tend to think she’s a little crazy when they see her talking to herself, when she’s actually talking to a ghost they can’t see. And being a little crazy isn’t very good for business. To complicate matters, the ghosts don’t know who killed them and often have only vague clues to help Emma in her search to find the truth. This time she’s trying to help Betsy Lynn Brady and her feline friend Mr. Whiskers, who died 20 years earlier. She gets some help from her boyfriend, Jack Henry Ross, who is aware of her abilities, and her new friend, Maizie, the town librarian. There is humor, suspense, danger, and more. This is book 7, and the first book I’ve read of the series, so I’m going at it a little backward and need to catch up.
I Love this whole series of books and would highly recommend them to anyone who loves books and mysteries to do with the paranormal
This is the seventh book in A Ghostly Southern Mystery series by Tonya Kappes. Emma Lee just can’t help herself but get involved when she needs to help a murder victim cross over.
Love the characters in this series. Wonder what is in store for Granny. Always love the humor and small town feel of Sleepy Hollow, Kentucky.
Ending surprised me. Can’t wait to see what adventures are ahead for John Henry and Emma Lee.
I received an ARC prior to publication and decided to voluntarily review it. Opinions expressed are my own.
For a taste of Kentucky paranormal romance sweeter than a pecan pie, this is your chance. A delightful mystery is solved by the delightful funeral home owner Emma, her ghosts, and her really not-fiancé Jack. A humorous, must-read.

So funny!
I adore her books. I think she is an excellent writer with a great storyline and characters that you can actually picture. My library doesn’t carry her other series which is . I can picture her characters clearly and I just think she’s amazing. Keep on writing. I have started one of her other series and I am equally fascinated
Emma Lee Raines runs the family business at Eternal Slumber, in Sleepy Hollow, Kentucky and has the gift. She is what is called a Betweener, although the majority of the town folk thinks she has Funeral Trama.
Emma Lee is trying to figure out how to help Betsy, a young child ghost haunting her, to cross over. Emma Lee only sees the ghosts of those who have been murdered. Unfortunately, Betsy isn’t giving Emma Lee much to go on. With the help of a medium, Emma Lee is directed to do some researching at the library. Emma Lee continues to probe Betsy, until the girl’s off-the-cuff reply shares one clue that ties Mr. Whiskers, a ghost cat, to Betsy’s disappearance. Emma Lee’s researching at the library, brings up a cold case.
Emma Lee gets Jack Henry Ross, the Sheriff, to go investigate the cold case; meanwhile, the town is in a buzz about a rumor, and Zula Fae, Emma’s granny, is doing everything possible to make that rumor come true, because turning thirty is a bad omen. While Emma Lee has her hands full trying to help Betsy, another ghost comes forward and Emma’s sleuthing is about to open a can of worms.
This is a wonderful series! I highly recommend. Ghosts, murder, and a quirky, lovable granny, what’s not to love?! I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
