That ghost sure looks . . . familiar Only a handful of people know that Emma Lee Raines, proprietor of a small-town Kentucky funeral home, is a “Betweener.” She helps ghosts stuck between here and the ever-after—murdered ghosts. Having followed this series from the beginning, it’s good to be back with these characters.
Emma Lee still suffers from what the town folk refer to as Funeral Trauma. They think she’s a bit off her rocker. I’m surprised she isn’t after having to deal with problems from beyond the grave. She’s a Betweener. She’s sees the ghosts of murder victims. It used to be confined to the ones whose last stop is her funeral home. But that appears to be changing. Also, it may not be confined to just deceased humans.
Her ability hits too close to home when the ghost of her sister comes to her for help. Now, Emma Lee is having to cope with her grief and trying to mend the fences of a sibling relationship that was on the rocks, while also solving her murder.
This was fun and had some new twists. Reading the book was fast. And I really enjoyed the interactions between Emma Lee and her sister, Charlotte Rae. I’m the youngest of four sisters and, even though we’re all very different and have our share of disagreements, we still love each other. A couple of brief scenes was all it took to make me weepy.
I was quite happy with the surprises and the mystery involved in this one. Visiting with the colorful and sometimes wacky characters in this series felt like coming home again and you can bet I’ll be waiting for the next book, and the next….
“A Ghostly Mortality” earns 5/5 glasses of Granny’s sweet tea & a slice of her apple pie!
Once again, I was totally entertained by Emma Lee and her “Betweener” gift in the sixth book of the Ghostly Southern Mystery series. Emma is clever, strong-willed, yet still working on her confidence. She loves her family and wants to help people during their most difficult time, even though now it’s her and Granny. The bit of romance is a nice respite from the investigation, and we continue to be delightfully engaged in all the small town squabbles and gossip. We were treated to engrossing suspense and an “Oh, my!” conclusion. The conflict between the sisters is one with which many of us can identify, and her unique opportunity to set things right and to share moments of real understanding between siblings is endearing and satisfying…I literally cried.
It’s a well-known fact that Emma Lee and her sister, Charlotte, don’t get along that great. What made it worse was when Charlotte left the family business to go work for a competitor. Emma Lee is trying to get Charlotte to sign over her share in the family business but has been unsuccessful in doing so. When Charlotte finally comes to her, Emma Lee thinks it’s to give her the signed papers. Wrong! Emma Lee realizes Charlotte is now a ghost, which means the unthinkable. That Charlotte has been murdered. However, Emma Lee must keep this fact a secret until Charlotte’s body can be found.
As a ghost, Charlotte is surprised to find that Emma Lee really can see dead people and isn’t crazy like everyone thinks after all. Charlotte can’t remember much about her murder but tries to help in any way she can. Along the way the two sisters become closer than they ever were in real life.
A lot of suspects, twists and turns, loveable characters, some not so much, and fun. Granny is quite a character.
I didn’t like that Emma Lee lied to her boyfriend, Sheriff Jack Henry Ross and, once we find out the reason for Charlotte’s death, I questioned some of the things that happened. Overall, though, this is a very entertaining story.
I really enjoyed A ghostly Mortality. I like the characters and the setting. The mystery has many twists and turns and I was surprised in the end. This is an interesting book. I look forward to more in this series.
love this series…
