Interested in history, murder, and drama? Well, this is the right book for you. This book has a lot to offer and will keep you on your toes.
The main character, Maggie, is an American who inherited her aunt’s antique shop in England, which she now runs. She is determined and loyal, which makes her likable. She meets professor Pembroke Martin, who has come from London to find his stolen historical apothecary jar, which is quite valuable. Pembroke, who goes by Martin, is a matter-of-fact character, but under his slightly uptight persona is a charming man that Maggie immediately takes to. I found him to be a little on the arrogant side, but not in an off putting way. Maggie and Martin have good chemistry, in my opinion. There are few other characters, but the relationship between Maggie and Martin is believable and engaging, even though it’s sudden.
The story ideals with artifacts, murder, investigating, and romance. There were many different elements included in this book. Something that I think a wide majority will find entertaining. I also feel the plot moves quickly and didn’t have any lulls, which is always a plus to me. The introduction of ghosts, didn’t really have a central role in this particular storyline, but I have a feeling it will play out in future books. Also, there isn’t a whole lot of backstory for Maggie and her aunt, but I think that too will be revisited.
Overall, I think this book has good dialogue, believable characters and plot, and some unique aspects that other books in this genre may not offer. If you are looking for a one-of-a-kind series to start, I think Ghost of a Chance is a good fit.
New to me series. I love it! This book is well written with great characters. I love Laurel’s mom, she makes me laugh every time she opens her mouth. I am happy to see that there are many more in this series. I look forward to starting the next one.
This is a fun and witty book filled with irreverent puns about death. At one point, a ghost (oh, yeah, she can see and talk to ghosts) points out to her if her friend brings sheep to graze on her land around the Funeral Home, she would be able to give the ewelogy! That’s an example of the kind of puns and fun in this book. She inherited the Funeral Home, debts, and ghosts from her father much to the consternation of her mother. And when she opens a grandmother’s casket for a viewing, she finds an extra body in it. Morgana Best is one of my favorite authors and there are several more of her books in this series and others on my TB R list so I need to get busy. I want to read them all!
witch woods funeral home is one of my two favorite series.
morgana best’s books are great anyway because they are clean and fun. she’s funny, sarcastic, and positive. the main characters have their problems but they have a good support system too. her books are just a positive place to be.
witch woods is a favorite because of ernie. no question, he’s my favorite. his puns are to die for.
thelma makes me crazy, but kind of amuses me too. i actually know a couple people like her. how sad is that?
if you’re wanting a cozy mystery with a paranormal flair, morgana best is your author. if you’re a ghost lover, this is the series.
Laurel Bay has returned home to take over the family funeral home after the death of her father. Unknown to most of the small town, Laurel can see, hear, and speak to ghosts. Laurel needs to make the funeral home profitable again, solve the murder of her ghost, and control the actions of her manipulative, very religious mother.
I enjoyed reading this story and would be interested in exploring the future of Laurel.
women-sleuths, cozy-mystery, ghosts, gigglefest
I would call the mother obnoxious, and not just because of her brand of blatantly hypocritical religiosity. But Laurel is barely managing not to strangle her. So, there’s the resident ghost, the temporary ghost who wants her murder solved, the droolworthy accountant, the KISS funeral, the Elvis funeral, and the rest of the town. I loved it and it was a real gigglefest!
