This isn’t my typical romance read with the historical twist to it but I most certainly was not disappointed in this novel from Jean Wilde. I have also not read her other work but for some reason the teasers pulled me into this novel and I was determined to see what would play out for these characters. I loved how this may have been an historical romance but it felt fresh enough that I did not find myself bored. The characters have some serious love/hate scenarios that kept me hooked to the kindle to see how things would play out and if they would end up loving each other for who they were in the long run and happy. You will have to read the story for yourself to find out but I can assure you won’t be disappointed you did. This is also the fourth book in a series but I didn’t have any issue reading it out of order and am now intrigued enough to see what the first three books entail as well and seeing if there will be more in the series to come!
A Gentleman’s Stipulation is the 4th book in the Scarlet Salon Series by Jean Wilde. Each book in this series can be read as a standalone. I had not previously read any of the other books in this series before this one. In fact this was my first book by this author. I did not feel as if I was missing any necessary information to enjoy the book although I’d like to read some of the others now since I enjoyed this one very much.
A Gentleman’s Stipulation is a regency romance novel with a good bit more steam than many other regency romances I’ve ever read. I though the author did a great job of setting the scene in regency England and I was drawn into the story from the very beginning.
The story involves Lady Victoria Gilbert who is looking for a husband before she gets any older and is considered too old to marry and Blake Hall who is not looking for a bride yet. When a situation brings the 2 of them together Blake does the gentlemanly thing and announces Victoria as his fiancé. There are a few major problems: One, she doesn’t like him and two, he has a few stipulations to add to the deal.
Can Victoria and Blake put aside the fact that Victoria doesn’t like or trust him? Can Victoria agree to the stipulations that Blake has added? I suggest you read this great book and find out for yourself. I guarantee that you won’t be disappointed. It’s a really great read.

“…I refuse to be roped into a marriage of convenience. I want a passionate woman in my bed, not some cold fish who’ll only tolerate my presence out of a sense of duty and to beget me sons.”
She wondered if he was aware that he’d just described how most marriages of the ton worked. Love matches were a rare occurrence in high society, as was fidelity.
…Victoria, however, couldn’t imagine accepting such a fate.
For once, she and Mr. Hall were in agreement. As unfashionable and middle-class as it was, Victoria wanted a love match. And while beggars couldn’t be choosers, surely she could find a man who shared her views. Present company excluded, of course. Just because she wanted to kiss the man didn’t mean she wanted to be married to him. She didn’t relish the thought of trading barbs and arguing with him for longer than his planned visit.”
A Gentleman’s Stipulation is the fourth book in The Scarlet Salon series by Jean Wilde. This is my first read by Ms. Wilde, and as you have probably noticed, I have come into this series a little backwards, starting on book #4 first. When this book caught my eye, I immediately read the blurb and was quite intrigued by what the story could hold. It has been a while since I have read a regency romance, so I thought this would make a great change of pace from what I had been reading of late. I hadn’t noticed it was the fourth book in the series, but as I discovered, it can definitely be read as a standalone. Having said that though, I really enjoyed the story and will certainly be going back to read the other books in this series, too- as well as exploring Ms. Wilde’s other work/s.
This is a really great historical/regency romance- it’s an enemies to lovers tale, full of drama, banter, spice, intrigue, chemistry, tension, and romance. Ms. Wilde may be a new-to-me author, but I am more than happy to have just discovered her work- as she certainly knows how to tell a cleverly woven and captivating story.
Lady Victoria Gilbert is 24 and has gotten to the point where she will soon be considered as an ‘old maid’. She really needs a husband and dreams of having a home and family of her own. But she has a bit of a barbed tongue, a mind of her own, and a stubborn independent streak- which hasn’t stood in her favour. Her chances of finding a suitor are becoming slimmer by the day.
Blake Hall is the wealthy son of a Mill tycoon- he has material wealth, but no title- which has set him apart from London’s High Society. He can’t stand the simpering young debutants, he would rather a woman who would challenge him. So, you would think that when he meets Lady Victoria, it would be love at first sight. But instead, they completely rub each other the wrong way. Although I think they secretly enjoyed the verbal sparring. But what happens when they are caught in a compromising situation? All the answers you need are waiting to be discovered between the covers of “A Gentleman’s Stipulation”.
Ms. Wilde has crafted her story really well- adding rich, vibrant, and authentic historical details. Her storytelling really draws you into her ‘world’ and she easily captures her readers attention. I was immersed in the story, staying engaged right through to the end.
The characters are really well developed with their own unique personalities. And even though they both annoyed/frustrated me at times throughout the story- I couldn’t help but like them and was rooting for them right from the beginning.
I am looking forward to exploring the rest of the series now!
Thank you, Jean Wilde!
A Gentleman’s Stipulation (The Scarlet Salon, #4) by Jean Wilde was a good 4 star read.
I was pulled in right from the beginning. This is Lady Victoria and Blake’s story.
Victoria is 24 and really wants a husband and family, at her age she is considered a spinster. Then she meets Blake at a party, he’s the son of a tycoon and let’s just say there wasn’t any love lost between them. This is a good love and hate story but you could feel the attraction between them. While at another party something happens that unexpectedly brings them together and they have to marry.
Can these two put their hate aside and actually find love? Will they make it to the altar?
Overall I enjoyed this book. I really liked Victoria, she is a strong character who isn’t afraid to say what’s on her mind. Blake has been hurt in the past and is very cautious. The bantering between these two was great. I look forward to reading more from this author and series. 1-click and get started today.
This is a spicy Regency read that is full of drama, romance, and intrigue. My favorite combination! I thoroughly enjoyed the tension and drama that built throughout the book. The author has done an excellent job of smoothly weaving all these aspects together and creating a truly engaging story and I was glued till the very end. The scenes are described in such detail that you have no trouble picturing them in your mind. The characters are well defined and portrayed nicely. The tension and chemistry between Victoria and Blake was undeniable. I loved following them in their journey to discovering love. This is a very entertaining read and I highly recommend it!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is a great romance story set in historic times. I don’t normally read historical romance books but i really enjoyed this.
Lady Victoria needs to find a husband. At 24 she is considered a spinster and her chances of finding a husband are slim.
Blake Hall is a successful business man who meets Victoria at a party however its not love at first sight, more like hate.
Victoria and Blake run each other up the wrong way constantly and they aruge none stop.
However, an incident that happens at another party means they need to put their differences aside to make their surprise marriage work.
As time progresses hate turns to love and with Victoria happy her past turns up to mess things up.
Can they get through this or will Blake cancel the wedding leaving her a ruined woman.
A Gentleman’s Stipulation ( The Scarlet Salon Book 4) by Jean Wilde. This was my first time reading a book by this author. The historical romance pulled my right in. The chemistry and interactions between Lady Victoria and Blake was wonderful. I truly enjoyed this book and story and I am looking forward to more by this author.
In this book, we find Lady Victoria Gilbert who is battling her heart and mind, her needs and her desires, but which will she choose? She’s not gonna settle for the detestable Mr. Blake Hall nonetheless.
Heir to a million dollar throne, doesn’t have a desire to settle down. After being turned down, he’s given up on trying to impress the likes of the debutantes in London’s high society. Lady Victoria is a spitfire for Mr. Blake Hall who seems smitten with all she has to offer.
The two are thrown together by unexpected circumstances as their unlikely union shapes and throws them together. Embark on this cynical and steamy that will definitely be a page-turner! You won’t regret it.

I love losing myself in the world of historical romance – it is my ultimate favourite genre to read and I particularly love it when an author knows how to write this genre well and Jean Wilde absolutely did that! I was completely swept up in this story form beginning to end – from the characters to the setting to the scenery it was a wonderful read. The authors’ writing was beautifully detailed – I could imagine exactly what I was reading at times. One of the things I loved was Lady Victoria and Blake’s relationship; they definitely loved to hate each other! They were great characters that I connected with quickly.
This is the fourth book in The Scarlet Salon series but can be read as a standalone which is how I read it. This is also the first book that I have read by this author and I will definitely be reading the other books in the series now!
This is my first novel by J. Wilde as well as my first historical romance ever. If you would see the books I read you’d wonder why I read this actually! However, the descirption has me intriqued to try it, even though I was starting with book 4 in the series. I understood the book just fine as a stand alone, I liked how strong the female character was but a little taken bake by that for the historical time setting as well. As well as her language actually….but what do I know this is my first one remember! The book is an easy read, easy to follow with your two main characters. It was worth reading and I did enjoy it as I read it in a day.
Jean Wilde immerse you into this historical world by making you feel as if you are within the book watching the events go by themselves. Victoria is What You would expect and more very demtried and a very strong character. Blake is in need of a wife and has set his sights on Victoria.

A Gentleman’s Stipulation is the fourth book in the Scarlet Salon series by Jean Wilde. This is the first book I have read by Ms. Wilde, and I had no problem understanding the book. This is also the first historical romance I have read in about ten years. I’m glad I decided to read this book. The storyline was fun to follow, the characters, Victoria and Blake, have some smoking hot chemistry and witty banter was always entertaining. I like this book so much, I’m looking forward to going back and reading the first three books in this series, and I’m definitely and historical romance into my genre rotation.
I really enjoyed this regency romance from Wilde. It was simply a retelling of Austin or other standard authors. Wilde did a wonderful job establishing the main characters and giving them a clear voice. I loved watching the relationship between Victoria and Blake develop and change. Victoria has a strong voice amidst difficult family circumstances and hasn’t allowed struggle to mar her outlook on her future. I really enjoyed this book and hope to read more from this author.
A Gentleman’s Stipulation (The Scarlet Salon Book 4) by Jean Wilde
5 of 5 Stars
This is a wonderful historical romance set in a Regency setting and although book 4 in a series by Jean Wilde it is a standalone story. I loved the characters and was swept along in the romantic storyline, hooked from page one until the last page. I found all the small Regency details that the author put in set the scene well and I was fully immersed in Lady Victoria’s world of social class and etiquette.
Lady Victoria Gilbert is considered to be ‘on the shelf’ and desperately wants a husband and family of her own, however she does not feel she is so desperate that she needs to except the advances of the handsome but obnoxious Mr Blake Hall. Blake is the “nouveau riche son of a mill tycoon” and is in need of a wife and has set his sights on the beautiful but aloof Victoria. Unfortunately Blake’s lack of pedigree in the Regency world means that he is seen as not worthy of the young debutantes but Victoria being older and wiser may be able to overlook the class separation, especially as every time they meet their chemistry sizzles of the page.
Having found themselves in a compromising position the couple discover that their first impressions of each other may have been wrong and that giving each other a second chance might lead to them both finding love.
I loved this book and enjoyed following Victoria and Blake on their romantic journey. Having not read a novel by Jean Wilde before I have definitely discovered a new favourite author.
A Gentleman’s Stipulation by Jean Wilde is the fourth book in the Scarlet Salon series. This is steamy romance set in the regency era. It has all the hallmarks of a great regency book, including sassy heroine and dark brooding hero.
I really enjoyed this enemies to lovers romance. The chemistry between the two main characters was electric, you could feel it ok each page.
The story was interesting. The author developed it well, setting the scene then building it throughout. It was easy to lose yourself in the pages of this book for a while. This is a new author to me but I enjoyed her work. I will definitely read more in the future.
Just Wrong on So Many Levels
This is my first book by this author, and it may very well be my last (even though I do usually pride myself on giving authors a few chances to impress me before giving up on them). I did not like this book. Regency romance is my favorite sub-genre of fiction, and I have read a fair amount of it. So many things in this book were just crude and unpleasant. Would a Regency woman ever call a man the three-letter word that starts with A so many times? I doubt it. Would a Regency maiden be as sexually aware as this heroine? Again, I doubt it. This is an enemies-to-lovers romance with a compromise. I frankly, could never really like either the hero or the heroine, and I have to be able to do so to enjoy the story, of course. I thought that the stipulations after that unwitting compromise were, frankly, insane and more than a little icky. Even by Regency standards, the hero is no gentleman (so the title is inaccurate); he is the son of a wealthy mill owner who has only been educated as a gentleman. To my view, he acts like no gentleman at all in any sense of the word, which I always want my Regency heroes to do whether they are an actual gentleman or not.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
Book four of The Scarlet Salon series a well written Regency story, and I want to read more in this series. Lady Victoria Gilbert and Mr. Blake Hall’s story. I enjoyed seeing the banter that went on between them, and the situation they found themselves in. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is a historical romance story that is a page turner which I loved. This is one of my favorite genes and I will be looking for more from this author. I was pulled right in from the first page and turning pages fast. This is a well written story that has characters that made the story feel as if you were right there with them. They are connectable and I had no problem relating to them. Lady Victoria is in need of a husband and Blake has no need for a wife. When they are both put in a position that could change things for them, will fate change their perspective of each other? I loved both of them and their banter back and forth. Their relationship is love-hate but it works for them very well. I highly recommend reading their story, and finding out what fate has in store for them.
I thoroughly enjoyed this Regency romance with great characters, romance and intrigue. She was almost a spinster and still wanted to marry and have a family. She was the daughter of an Earl and brother who are now deceased. She meets a rich business man and they instantly were arguing. Then she went to spend another season and attend with his sister. There is a lot of intrigue, but if course a HEA.

Although I thought Victoria was a little unnecessarily haughty in the beginning, not only did she grow on me, but she also proved herself completely immune to TSTL temptations when faced with danger where so many other h’s have failed in books by other authors. And yay for that! Intelligent, competent women are surprisingly hard to come by in the literary world.
Perhaps not everything was completely plausible in this story, but it was highly entertaining, well written, and refreshingly free from stupid angst. I can’t wait to see what Jean Wilde writes next.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
