From the New York Times bestselling author of Rules of Civility and the forthcoming novel The Lincoln Highway, a story about a man who is ordered to spend the rest of his life inside a luxury hotel—a beautifully transporting novel. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.
Brimming with humor, a glittering cast of characters, and one beautifully rendered scene after another, this singular novel casts a spell as it relates the count’s endeavor to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a man of purpose.

Audiobooks are my guilty pleasure, and A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW might be my favorite to date. The breadth, and yet the smallness, of this story is stunning, and the narrator gives a flawless performance. (I feel Count Alexander Rostov would approve!) Rostov is the ultimate hero–kind, civil, funny, honorable, and able to create something wonderful out of the lot he has been allocated by the Bolshevik Tribunal. (I feel we could all learn from him!) Even better, Rostov is surrounded by an incredible cast of endearing characters who surprised me at every turn. A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW is a modern classic with every twist and turn neatly tied together by the final, deeply satisfying page.
A wonderful book to savor. Really hated for it to end.
Did not want this story to end! I believe Kenneth Branagh will do it justice and anxiously await the series. Amor Towles is my new favorite writer.
Loved this book. The perspective was interesting as were the many characters. Well written , great sentence structure, wonderful story line.
A lovely, sweet story with wonderful detail and characters
Love, love love it..
This phenomenal book has been on the best seller list for years for a reason. You’ll read it again and again.
I couldn’t put it down, and I learned so much! Extremely well crafted!!
I loved the writing, the character, the depiction of the changing times, and the way the ending brought everything together. Wonderful book!
A great tapestry of Russian history, culture and remarkable care in human relationships over a lifetime. An inspiration.
Our book club was thoroughly enamored with this book. Great story.
As far as I’m concerned, A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW stands in a class by itself. It’s as close to perfect as a book can be. It helps that I majored in Russian literature, but even if you’ve never touched Tolstoy or dipped into Dostoevsky, you will love every moment you spend with this novel. In the first pages, the newly-formed Bolshevik government, in 1922, sentences Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov to life under house arrest inside Moscow’s Metropol Hotel—a far preferable fate than a firing squad or Siberia. And there he lives and makes a fulfilling life for the next 30+ years. Author Amor Towles creates a rich and believable world, along with a whole cast of characters you never want to say goodbye to. I won’t reveal any more of the plot, because it’s so much fun to watch how masterfully it unfolds. This book captivated me and made me thoroughly happy.
Wonderful characters. Learned a lot about Russian history. I could not put it down. Highly recommend this book.
Just finished this book, was delightful! A long, but easy read. Count Rostov is a total charmer and his adventures in the Metropol hotel is one of the best adventures I’ve had this year. Reminiscent of “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and soon to be made into a mini series with Kenneth Branagh. I highly recommend this. Will affect you long after you finish.
A beautiful story, looked forward to hearing about what the Count was up to next! Loved every minute, was sad for it to end.
One of the best books I’ve ever had the pleasure to read. Wonderful characters, richly depicted. Flawlessly elegant prose. Absolutely beautiful and moving.
